2014 Archive - QE2's Baked Alaska Parade -- May Photo of the Month (closed)

This month's theme is "QE2's Baked Alaska Parade".  Andy H, the winner of the February competition, chose this topic for May 2013.

This will be an interesting month, as there may not be all that many pictures about. The Baked Alaska Parade was only introduced in more recent years (it would be interesting to know when...), it was only done in the Mauretania and Caronia Restaurants, and not even on every cruise.

It is therefore quite possible that most of us will be voters on this topic, rather than contributors. I look forward to seeing as many beautiful and atmospheric pictures of these parades as possible, and I hope that everyone, whether contributor or not, will enjoy the pictures and the chance to vote on them. Another of QE2's memorable moments for the 2014 calendar!

The deadline for submitting photos is 31 May 2013. Voting will run from 1 June 2013 until 30 June 2013.

There were always plenty of cameras clicking to take photos of the Baked Alaska Parade, so we hope that Forum members look for their three best photos to upload to the competition.

Have just submitted mine and hope there will be many beautiful pictures of this always much-awaited event on the longer of QE2's cruises.

Somehow, after the spectacular parade, I found the baked Alaska itself a bit of an anticlimax. Maybe because we did not get the flambé cherries...?!

I quite agree, much as though l loved the pomp and ceremony or the speeded up or slowed down meal service when the actual dish arrived there indeed was always the anticlimax. And given that trying to take photos the poor camera would be in overdrive trying to focus on anything..

One week into May, and my photos of the Baked Alaska Parade are feeling a bit lonely in the Gallery. Please reassure me that I was not the only one leaping up with a camera to record the moment!

I wonder can we manage to bring together as many photos of these spectacular parades as we have done for previous themes? It will take a bit of effort, but the effort may be well rewarded .

Slow start to this month's competition but it is gathering pace and there are some good Baked Alaska photos in the Gallery.  But we could do with some more!

At the moment we are seeing a range of photos from 1997 to 2008 both in the Mauretania and Caronia restaurants.  Have a look at your QE2 photos and if you have any of the Baked Alaska Parade please upload them to the competition.

Well I've added a couple for you   Not particularly good photographically, but the best I've got  
(you do know the parade is at the end of the meal after lots of wine, in low light conditions, right?  I have many blurred images taken at that time of evening )

Thanks Isabelle - it was just nice finding a topic I actually had some pictures of (though I'm a little sad I missed the comp with the bit beneath the bridge ).

No, I only knew her in the very late stage of her life  - 2006 to 2008 - I managed 5 voyages in that time though .
& packed a fair amount in.
I said solo 3 times; met my fiance on the 3rd & we went together twice - I started in Mauretania, had a go in the Queens Grill, and our last voyage was in Britannia .
I was on board when they announced her sale in 2007 & we managed to get on board just a month before she left.
We also followed her out of Southampton in Nov 2008 on one of the many small boats - courtesy of ABP whose competition we won (aong with 4 others) with the story of having met on board.

We managed to fit quite a lot into those 3 years
