Cruise Talk is discussing QE2's Cape Town Move - chatter there suggests it was "not Cape Town" that said no (unconfirmed) and other (some unlikely in my opinion) reasons for the 2009 refit.

Spoke with someone in Liverpool today, she has spent 22 years in Dubai
She left there earlier this year with her house still unsold....
Wish that QE2 could be allowed to work.

Am I allowed to mention my own website? I started a new one recently, dedicated to Solent ships (passenger ships, rather than cargo ships) and there I have pics of QE2 (and others) plus a blog, which mentions QE2 in two out of the three blog entries so far. http://solentships.webs.com/

Cheers

Great site!  I've been on your site before.  Wishing I could be located closer to a busy port.  New York is still 2 hours away for me.
I too started a little blog of my own about mainly QE2.  I will add your link to mine.

I have it on very good authority that everything in this article relating to QE2 is a load of nonsense.http://www.cruisecritic.co.uk/news/news.cfm?ID=3250
QE2 didn't need much work at all to sail on through SOLAS-2010.  The reason she stopped sailing was very simply the offer from Dubai, which seemned too good to pass up on at the time.

I read an article where Cunard (Carol Marlow) were saying that they sold QE2 to Dubai because she would be 'cherished' there, part of the article states "...It was a very difficult decision to make but at the end of the day, you can’t turn down something that is going to preserve this wonderful ship for generations to come.” No, and you can't turn down 50 million quid either... Or am I just cynical?

You probably all know the excellent blogs of Luis Miguel Correia :

http://lmcshipsandthesea.blogspot.com

-- yet for the sake of completeness, he must be mentioned here!

He has written pages and pages about QE2 -- if you start here, you can hop around to the detailed entries :

http://rmsqueen.blogspot.com/search/label/RMS%20QUEEN%20ELIZABETH%202

He has been photographing ships in Lisbon for well over 30 years and has seen QE2 in several stages of her life.

His book "RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 of 1969" was available in the Ocean Bookshop, and I noticed that Ian McNaught was really happy signing it (while he made a bit of a fuss when we gave him Nick Bates's "Pinch of Salt"!   ;)  )

To my disappointment, I cannot find this book in Amazon UK at present... but the web site is active! Pity the QE2Story and this Forum are not hyperlinked there at present, but I am hoping that this could be done soon.

Disgraceful!  Search for QE2 on Twitter and the vast majority of people are using it as a shorthand for things like the bridge at Dartford.

Hang on a minute...  Who's that half way down* the page mentioning the real thing?! ;)

http://twitter.com/home#search?q=qe2

*"Half way down" is accurate as of 16.30 today 10th December

From The Guardian
'Family Life'

'...Fast forward to the new millennium and to celebrate my husband's early retirement we're en route to New York, my father's favourite city, on Cunard's beautiful QE2. From the open decks, we watched as a watery sun broke through the mist and the outline of the Statue of Liberty and the skyscrapers of Manhattan came into view. In the magic of those early morning hours, I came close to seeing what had made my father choose that life over us. P Kelly'
