There seem to be a few people who met their partner on/through QE2 and snippets are mentioned here and there. How about a thread to put them under one?
How/Where/When did you meet? Passenger/Passenger:Crew/Crew: Passenger/Crew? Were crew allowed to meet passengers socially? Or was it a bit like College staff and their students-I know plenty of happy marriages where that's happened!

Rob -sorry should have posted in Passenger memories probably if you want it

I didn't meet my partner on the QE2 but we did meet through a mutual acquaintance that I met on the QE2. Our engagement became official when the legislation came into force regarding Civil Partnerships (we were on board then and celebrated with a bottle of Champagne in the Crystal Bar) and we honeymooned on board the next year.

Is it true... do we know... whether Nelson Mandela really proposed to his beloved Graça Machel on board QE2?

For me, one of the many reasons why I love QE2, is because Nelson Mandela and Graça Machel were there, and were so happy on board. Their wonderful spirit somehow lingered, even years later...

I went on a once in a life time linedance/scottish dance cruise in Oct 2002 on QE2,I met my wife Muriel and we got engaged on the Xmas cruise 2002. We married on 11/Sep /2003 and had our honeymoon on the Falklands cruise 2003 on QE2.
We have spent over a third of our married life on QE2 / Queen Victoria and were on the  new Queen Elizabeth for its naming ceremony, we are now looking forward to 14th Dec this year when we embark on QE for xmas cruise and then stay on for the full world cruise (our 9th).

Yes I did!
Back in the day at a certain of year, Officers on leave would be asked to volunteer some leave time to travel to the US and travel around to various areas, with the areas local rep, and the person from the NY office for that area. I was separated from my wife and divorce was pending, so I volunteered for 3 weeks. They asked where I would like to go I said "Don't care"
Picked up my one way ticket to NY from South Western House and an itinerary, headlined in big letters "SUBJECT TO CHANGE!".
Got to NY went to the office to the Sales Dept. Was treated like royalty....Thank you, thank you, thank you!
When I was getting my real itinerary and tix, this young lady asked what I was going to do on the weekend. Maybe see a show, visit friends etc. She told me that Cunard was doing a 5k charity run at the UN Sunday, come and support them. OK. Showed up at the UN Blazer, slacks and tie of course. So I would be identifiable and cheered them on. This beautiful young lady, named Deborah Bowne was one of the runners. After the run we went to a place called Lily Langtry's, that did a brunch, all you can eat and drink for $15. Trust me they didn't make a profit on us! Though our waitress did get a free cruise on QE2! Some of the people from the office were quite senior. From there we went to a bar to play Trivial Pursuit, 25 cents/game, we put over $50 in the machine. I got Debs extension number and went back to my hotel.
My first, week was driving round New Jersey, meeting the Travel Agents, answering questions and giving a 10 min talk on QE2. Places like Teaneck, Tintinhull.  I was then asked to fly on my own to Tampa, FL to give a talk there, flying in blues uniform, middle of summer, get to FL peeing down with rain. Local rep meets me and off we go to the Ruth Eckerd hall to do our thing there in front of 900!!!!! Following morning I have to fly out to New Orleans...get to this hotel, they said...remember no cell phones. So ticket is waiting at Tampa airport and off I go. because I am in this strange uni I get up graded to 1st class. get to NO and jump in a taxi to the hotel, message waiting for me, forget the hotel go straight to the venue. Jump in another taxi and go to the venue. Straight into my talk all rumpled and thirsty give away a few cruises to the Agents and then they take me to a different hotel. Man oh man, cant remember any hotel names, but this room had 2 three piece suites in the room and 2 phones in the bathroom! Dinner at Antoines, 400 year old brandy! The following morning started 2 weeks in Texas and Oklahoma. Weekend in Oklahoma City where a State Senator I met in the hotel bar took me on a tour, they have an oil well in the basement of the Capitol building. Cowboy Hall of Fame, them Monday touring Oklahoma, till the flight back to NY on Friday Who met me at the airport with my tix home...Deb.
It went on from there. She would have to come to the ship every time it got to NY often travelled down to Everglades. 4th of July 1987 we were married at her church in NY. Honeymoon was free, Deb won the air tickets at the Cunard picnic. Hotel in Barbados was free, Cunard Paradise Beach, and on the first day we were at the swim up bar and this dude with a video camera asks if he can ask us a few questions on camera, we said sure. So we answered the questions on how good the hotel was, the service...the rate we paid. We didn't realize that the hotel manager was watching and told the bartender that our tab was free as long as we stayed! He also upgraded our room.
25 years and 2 children later..... Thanks Cunard!

I actually met my first wife on QE2 as well. She was what the Brits would call a Beauty Therapist and the Americans would call a Cosmetoligist. She worked for Steiners on board. We thought we were in love so we decided to get married. With the help of Phil Williams the Radio Officer (Willum) we arranged to go ashore in Honolulu and get married!  She ended her stint on QE2 and ended up working for Renata John, Elton John's wife...yes he was married to a woman at one time, google it! At their farm in Windsor. I met him several times when I dropped her off and quite often had breakfast with him....very strong bloody marys in his kitchen.
Sadly the marriage did not last. Well not sadly or I would have not met Deb!

Touching romantic article here in the Huffington Post :

There is a nice lot of photo slides too -- many of them of the "Meet the Captain" variety. I wonder whether any of the photographers here in the Forum might have been behind the camera for them?

I married Sarah Deere-Jones the Harpist and we're now in N. Cornwall Self-employed.

Hi Willum -- looking forward to reading your story :) .

Was it on / through QE2 that you met? You must have been moving in different "worlds" while on board?

So glad that you have built up a wonderful new life together. I listened to Sarah's interview on "Excess baggage" at the time it was broadcast and enjoyed it very much.

Yes it was Sarahs Birthday in Mombasa 1984. Chris Connerty invited her to the Wardroom we were alongside overnight, I'd just flown out to Durban to do the last leg of the worldy, many of the officers had been taken ill on the flight out but I hadn't eaten the offending prawns. Sarah (Deere-Jones) the ships Harpist, and I soon found we had a lot in common. Both 'folkies' and Alan Stivell enthusiasts (Breton Harper). I owned a house a couple of miles from where she was born in Dorset. She went back to her cabin and  told herself she'd just met her husband. We married in that village in Dorset in 86, Capt Ridley came to the reception. 28 years later we're inseparable. She's now one of the worlds authorities on the history of the Harp and lectures for NADFAS and others and I'm an electronics 'inventor', but still play music, we did a gig tour of Australia earlier this year. We live in a remote valley in N.Cornwall smallholding with horses and dogs, we had a Dogs not Sprogs policy! We both have a lot to thank QE2 for.

Brilliant story Willum and wonderful to read a story that lifts your spirits on this last day of the year.  It is amazing how QE2 worked her magic so that you both could meet.  Tell Sarah that I have a wonderful memory of my first cruise on QE2, boarding at the midship lobby where it was like heaven on earth to hear the wonderful sound of the harp.

Not quite, but in 1999 we boarded QE2 in Southampton, got off at Greenock and got married, re-boarded and continued to the Land of the Midnight sun as a honeymoon. Took a bit of planning, but it all worked out.

In 2007 as part of the 40th anniversary visit to Greenock, the local paper (The Greenock Telegraph) ran a competition asking for stories about QE2. The prize was a QE2 shaped (and almost sized) cake baked by Aulds, the local bakers.
Most impressive cake.
We submitted the story of how we got married - and won the cake!

Me and my wife met by pure coincidence as it turned out, we had both decided to go out on deck after dinner and we ended up in close proximity to each other, I being the awkward late-teenager that I was sparked up possibly the most terrible small chat I could muster and we got to talking; After that we both had a "few" drinks and exchanged phone numbers before going back to our cabins. We kept talking for the rest of the voyage and as luck would have it we both resided in Southampton at the time so we simply continued to meet and talk until I worked up enough courage to ask her on an actual date, and a few years later I asked her to be my wife.
And now at 27 I have a child on the way, I am eternally grateful to Cunard and QE2 for giving me the most fantastic wife possible and the opportunity to bring a child into this world. We are finally closing in on a name for our daughter and we should have it by tomorrow, if so you can expect the chat forum to gain an extra topic!

I met my Wife Barbara on the QE2 in June of 1977. We both played hard to get, and in 1980 I came over to America and we got married in 1980 in New York. Unfortunately she passed away in May of 2019.
It was a lot different those days on the ship. Officers were encouraged to mix with passengers, which we did all the time. We even got the prices of drinks in the bar reduced by about 60% to encourage us to mingle.
My colleague Ken Adams also met his wife like me and we both left the ship the same year in 1980.

Thanks for sharing your story Alan.  Fantastic to learn how many people met their spouse or partner on QE2.

Also good to hear how Officer at that time were encouraged to mix with passengers and that the drinks prices were reduced to encourage.  This is something that is missing on the new Cunard ships.  The Officers are at the organised Cocktail parties and if people want to stand in the middle of the Queens Room to chat with the officers they can do so.   But on QE2 I always felt the Officers mixed with passengers a bit more and in some cases lasting friendships were formed.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

When I was an Apprentice/Cadet on board the ship in 71/72, for some reason we were being "supervised" by Francis Milroy, a 2 1/2 stripe, female Officer who worked in the Bureau/Pursers Office.
I couldn't figure that one out either as we were Engineer Cadets.
Once, at a meeting with her, in our accom, she showed me the Officer "Blue Book". Where she had got hold of it I had no idea. On the page she showed me, there was a line that had been heavily underlined and I quote exactly: " Officers, who in the course of their duties, are engaged in conversation by passengers, should, as quickly and as politely as possible, should break off that conversation and return to those duties."
