Possible sale of SS Rotterdam to Oman?
« on: Oct 02, 2012, 08:30 PM »
This rather worrying news item was sent to Liners' List by Willem van der Leek today :

Quote
The latest news, announced by the owner of the s.s. Rotterdam, is that there has been an offer from an investment company in Oman to buy the ship and to serve as a VIP-ship.

Woonbron (the owners) did suffer a huge loss in restoring the ship and is still forced to sell at least 80% of their interest. There are interesting parties within The Netherlands, but the amount involved is much, much lower that that from the Oman party.

It is big news on radio and newspapers.

Going by what has been posted in Facebook about the Rotterdam's activities over the summer, she has been busy and popular for a wide range of activities, and of course she is in the right place and climate -- if she cannot survive in what must be a relatively ideal situation, what hope is there for her and other great retired ships seeking a future?

Is it only Middle Eastern money that can save them now?

From what I understand, her conversion cost dramatically more than it should have done. If the same work was done again now, it would cost less (if carefully managed).
This has meant that financially she was rather doomed to start with, no matter how brilliantly successful she was! The debt and finances are dragging her down!
It's also, I'm sure, not helped QE2 to have her as a symbol of how financially it can go very wrong. I think she's brilliant and in the perfect location and it would be very sad if the Netherlands lost her after all it took to get her there.  I'm looking forward to being back on board, for the fourth time, very soon!

Would the Oman group use her to replace the Veronica?

What little I have seen, the answer seems to be no. The Veronica is an accommodation ship for a group of workers for whom there is no hotel available otherwise.

Whereas the Rotterdam would be a VIP ship, perhaps a visible sign of some one-upmanship going on among the rulers of the Gulf States.

It would be a sad day if the ship was sold.  It seemed to me like an example of a success story to have the SS Rotterdam in the city of her name.

I hope she stays in Rotterdam but then again, money speaks so if there is a chance to recoup some of the investment then her owners will sell.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

The Dutch Socialist Party wants to keep the SS Rotterdam where she is and to list her as a municipal monument.
