"The Box" on the front of the superstructure
« on: Apr 27, 2009, 04:45 AM »
I've been thinking about this "Mystery Box" added in front of the new kitchen (former lookout bar).  Someone out there must have the answer.  I was thinking ex-crewmember Louis - you worked in the Caronia restaurant.  Do you know what that mystery box was for?

I couldn't decide where to post this for the best, but I think this is the best place.

3 weeks ago in Dubai, I visited "the box" and explored the area where the observation bar once was, and tried to visualise it as far as possible.  I also stepped out onto the "balcony" in front of the observation bar windows, through the door in what was the front of the bar.  I thoroughly enjoyed this bit of exploration.  The brightness of the white superstructure in Dubai's midday sun was unbearable, and I didn't stand there for long!!

The photo showing part of the kitchen is in the front of what was once the observation bar. (you can tell from the angle of the wall) and the stairs are inside the box.

More images.

The last 3 are taken with me standing on the same spot.  The view of the kitchen is looking across the observation bar, the front of it on the right (the stairs are in the box).

Amazing to see such detail of the kitchen area that was once the Lookout Bar and the windows from the deck area.  This area should be reinstated as the Lookout Bar as and when her owners transform her into the proposed luxury venue.

I refer to the box like structure added to make extra space for the kitchens:

I personally think it added something to the ship, gave her a more "friendly" appearance (perhaps that's the wrong word) - but I like it.

However she did look so very smooth before and it did mean they lost the Lookout bar.

What do you think? Like it? Dislike it? Should it stay if she becomes a hotel?

I had a bit of a revelation while enjoying Ringo's Queen Elizabeth book.

There was a box on the front of RMS Queen Elizabeth, that was almost identical to the one added to QE2.  It was just behind the hatch for the hold.

I can't believe that the person designing the "box" for QE2, didn't draw the design from QE's.

Attached is a very small crop of a much larger image.

I agree.  If you study the profile of Queen Elizabeth and her bridge structure, the similarities are all there.  I truly believe that James Gardner successfully used her as inspiration for a modern interpretation of the Queen in his exterior work for QE2.

The bridge wings, the bridge wing supports, the bridge itself, the windows below, and even the air foil on the bridge wings themselves all look like modern interpretations to me, especially the center portion of the bridge.  All this has been carried on in Queen Mary 2, with enclosed bridge wings.

Ok not showing the box..but showing the area... Sailing into New York l found the view quite breathtaking..
and an unusual view of the bridge.
I had been invited into the crew bar untill lord knows when, some sleep and then dragged out front in the very early hours...Memories  sigh and then a crew tour of NY
