1977 Queen's Jubilee on QE2
« on: May 31, 2012, 10:03 PM »
Does anyone have any information about what happened on QE2 in 1977, to celebrate the Queen's jubilee?
Passionate about QE2's service life for 40 years and creator of this website.  I have worked in IT for 28 years and created my personal QE2 website in 1994.

QE2 was at the 1977 Spithead Silver Jubilee Review

(Although I don't think she's listed here:

She wasn't at the actual formal Review she sailed through the rehearsal a few days before the formal Review.

Here's a link to the Fleet Review I posted a while back - https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/index.php/topic,41.0.html .

Also at the other end of this trans-Atlantic was "Operation Liner" in New York.  Photos of both events can be found on the referenced link.

The day of the rehearsal was awesome. We left the dock around noon I think, then sailed down the roads and thru a line of ships all dressed out. We must have left at noon, because the Red arrows fly past and then Concorde over all of us. The company I worked for, Ocean Pictures had a photog up in a Royal Navy Helo and got some great shots.

Again the small world created by this forum just got smaller.  Here's a picture taken by the Ocean Pictures photographer on that day -

I am the only one on the port side of the mast on the mast deck.  My dad is on the other side, same deck, taking a picture of the helicopter.  Here's the picture he took -

The photog on the Helo was Stuart Hunter-Cox, owner of Ocean Pictures.

Thank you, Tony, for that! I do love it when we can add more information and get ever closer to completing a picture!

I did not even know of QE2's existence at the time, but can "re-live" some of it through these stories...
