Introducing myself - Peter Crosse
« on: Oct 19, 2012, 07:19 PM »
In the 1960s my wife and I made 4 Altantic crossings between us, in 3 different ships; Queen Mary and Carmania ( Cunard ) and Oriana ( P & O ). I hope that qualifies us as ocean liner enthusiasts.

In the 1970s I found and bought a bergere suite, sofa and two armchairs with caned arm panels, in the local Boy Scouts shop in Clifton, Bristol. I was told they had been donated by a ship’s captain visiting Avonmouth. He had claimed that they came from the Queen Elizabeth, he acquired them when the Queen Elizabeth was decommissioned and sold off to Hong Kong, and had used them in his quarters. Under one of the chairs was a hand-written mark “QE BALLROOM”. I have often tried to find picture evidence of these seats in the ballroom of the Queen Elizabeth but so far have not found any.

We had the suite reupholstered as the old velvet covering was past it. It was great to believe that we were sitting on Queen Elizabeth memorabilia every day, even though to be honest they were not that comfortable. We used them until last year when the were sold at auction. I had tried to interest some of the ocean liner memorabilia dealers who advertise on-line but none were interested, ‘brown furniture’ is supposed to be out of fashion!

Hello Peter, welcome to the Forum and thank-you for telling us about your travels on Ocean Liners.

I wish my local charity shop sold such interesting items as chairs from the Queen Elizabeth, certainly a good talking point for visitors.  I hope that our members are able to help you to trace a photo of these chair in the ballroom onboard QE.

Looking forward to hearing more more you about travelling onboard Queen Mary, Carmania and Oriana on the

Welcome aboard Peter,

I had a quick look online and found thishttp://www.thecunarders.co.uk/QE%20Gallery6.htm. If you scroll down to the fifth photo, you should see a chair very like the ones you had on the left of frame. Hope this helps.

Thank you Riskygizmo, I see the sofa on the second picture and as you pointed out, ome of the chairs on the 5th one. Now I know they were genuinely from the Queen Elizabeth I wish that I had had room to keep them as well as some more comfortable replacements.
