Proposals to save the City of Adalaide
« on: Apr 20, 2009, 03:43 AM »
Hi Rob,

I was wondering if we can have another thread on the forum to discuss "other classic ships" besides our great liners?

The reason I ask this is I love the old tea clippers like the poor old HMS Carrick (City Of Adelaide) that was once berthed at Glasgow's Victoria Bridge.

She is sitting awaiting restoration to her former glory at the Scottish Maritime Museum.....she is a classic comparible with the Cutty Sark and infact, older. She is the world's oldest composite ship - that is to say a ship built with a wooden hull supported by iron frames.!!!

I have spoken with the chairman of the museum and he told me she was resposible for 60% of Southern Australias population.....YES....60%.

When I was a wee boy, I was on her when invited by good family friends Mark McManus & his wife Marion (Jim Taggart - TV Detective) that held their wedding reception on her when she was on the Clyde. God rest Mark and his beautiful wife Marion.

Anyway, I visited her recently in Irvine. She is a shell but her hull, although rusted, is still intact. They have platforms that allow you to view her entire hull inside, a very surreal experience.

Again, why are people on this planet NOT saving these examples.....

Anyway See this link http://www.ilfsac.org.uk/sthaust_cofa.php

Hi Rob,

Well you just started one! ... but as for an additional section for either other classic ships, or other current ships, then no, sorry, thats not the focus of this forum, even if many people who are part of this forum are interested in that.  This is the QE2's story, and in my view that touches on QM2 (her replacement) and her predecessors but no further.

Update from the Carrick / City of Adelaide, a very famous ship which in later years was a static attraction in Glasgow City Centre.

I totally agree with this editorial from Sea Breezes

The same could be said for QE2. She needs our country's protection.

Cheers.

Download the link. What do you think? Seems strange to me but it would stop her going to the breakers.

Absolutely fascinating concept for saving her!

Sounds good to me - its reversible (as long as it doesn't go horribly wrong during the process of moving/flipping her!), and better than losing her.

Rob, she does look in a sorry state, going by the photo's. Just hope she can be saved......

So it looks like this ship is off for a new life in Australia after all. It seems sensible to me, and certainly preferable to 'scientific deconstruction' - but what do others think?

She seems to be saved!

Many people in this area have fond memories of attending events on board her when she was moored right in Glasgow City Centre.

There's a nice image of her in the city centre here - http://carnet-maritime.com/histoire-maritime/lourdes-menaces-sur-le-clipper-city-of-adelaide.html

Looks like she's 'Stralia bound (via Greenwich).

http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-23975347

Adelaide does have another ship of much the same age, though in an even sorrier state;

http://www.methilheritage.org.uk/content/pages/santiago.php

The Santiago was built at Methil on the Forth (incidentally the home town of George Moodie, first Master of the Cutty Sark). Her owners were Balfour Williamson of Liverpool, a firm set up in 1851 with a large capital investment from Stephen Williamson's Uncle, Alex Lawson, Linen Manufacturer of Kingskettle. The deal for the finance was almost certainly done in Lawson's house in the village. About 120 years later my Mum and Dad bought that house and I was brought up in it. Isn't the world a terribly small place sometimes?
