Very good points, Myles.  I think it sounds like they have secured an extra month and a half from Alang.

It's good to hear that more time has been bought. They announced recently that they will be deciding between the two plans soon.

Does anyone have any new information concerning the Big U?  Their website is strangely silent of late....

The best plan works for me at the moment is the one that involves a trip across the harbour to the dry dock for an inspection and some survey work.

Hi Hank -

You had made reference in another topic that SSUS still has her boilers and turbines.  Does she still have any of her other machinery and equipment ?

Thanks,

June

I'm sure I've read that its all still there.  Perfect as a future museum.

Going through some old papers I found the attached documents detailing the planned conversion of the SS.US to a cruise ship back in the 90's. Looks like it would have ruined her looks as per the Norway.......Hope this is of interest.

Call me cynical but it's that word "restore" cropping up again when it won't be a restoration but a revamping to suit the commercial ends of her owners/operators. Having said that it's the only real way she'll pay her way if she is to pay her way after all that's happened to her in the last 51 years. Wonder if this scheme will get off the ground unlike the others...
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2 in her new life, in Dubai, in January 2020 and August 2022.

That render bears a rather striking visual similarity to the original plans for the QE2 doesn't it?!

Here is 9 minutes of video of the SS United States machinery spaces filmed in 1999 - all asbestos lagging has been removed, and anything that was designed to raise or accept steam at a pressure above a standard 'jug' pressure would probably fail instantly today.

The machinery space layouts are more akin to that of a warship that a commercial vessel - but she did have an aircraft carrier propulsion plant in her.

Put on your hard hat, grab a good torch, and mind your knees!

Enjoy!

The link below leads on to a further 5 parts of the video tour of SSUS.
