With the gut wrenching news that The Love Boat (Pacific Princess) has been sold for scrap, how many of us on here remember the series and would enjoy watching it on TV

As a very young teenager l would sit glued to the TV ,the titles would roll, that memorable tune (sung by Jack Jones, which he also sang onboard in 1987 on the QE2s maiden voyage in the Grand Lounge, but thats another story... )  and the views of The Love Boat as the gangway was retracted, the whistle would blow & off we would sail from the port of LA, whisked away to another word  on another adventure on the high seas. The usual call at Marzipan (yes l know thats not its proper name, but l can never remember what its called)
This programme in some ways was my first impression of cruising, and didnt it look fun.

Anyway so l guess its goodbye to Captain Stubing, Gopher,Issac, Doc and Julie.. I for one am going to miss you !!!
But thanks to the DVD l bought last year, for me The Love Boat lives on...

Sad news for this ship

"The Love Boat" first aired in September 1977 right after my family's vacation that July which included our 6th and 7th transAtlantic crossings on the QE2.  My interest in QE2 at that point was strong so this new show about a cruise ship particularly interested me. 

I remember thinking how modern the Pacific Princess looked and, I will admit here, how I thought she looked better than QE2 at the time.  I look back on that now and laugh knowing that the the PP was only 2 years younger than QE2 (Sea Venture '71-'75, PP '75-'02) and how much better QE2 was/is overall.  I watched that show religiously for the first 2 or 3 seasons and intermittently after that (college distractions).

Regardless, the Pacific Princess' scrapping will to me be  almost like losing and old, familiar friend.

I also grew up watching the series.  Glad to see it was as popular overseas as it was here.  So sad to see her go.

Wow, I had forgotten what she looked like, her interiors are quite attractive even by today's standards...the interior sets for the T.V. show did not do her real interiors justice.  Noticed her bow anchors are missing.  That bow shot shows her very pronounced tumblehome.  Pity that ships aren't eternal, like a person, they have a birth, a life and, an end/death.  Captain John Treasure Jones remarked about the Queen Mary:

"I'm always very sorry to see a very nice ship end it's days, but it's inevitable of course, but both ships and us have a, have a time limit and the day must come when we, when we, we go, and this applies to ships as to human beings"

She was originally the Sea venture, which came and took the passengers off QE2 when she broke down off Bermuda, with oil in the boiler feed water, April 1st 1974. QE2 was without main power for approx 2 weeks and was towed to Bermuda.

  Poor little Love Boat, no love for you on the breakers' beach. Can someone give me a date for her demise for my records, please. At least she had a long and happy life, from 1970 to 2007, then laid up. Not like another ship I could name, which lies on her side, wrecked far too soon.
I also saw a few episodes of 'the Love Boat', I thought Pacific Princess was easily the star of the show!

I believe it must have been the same ship, Pacific Princess, from whose webcam we captured the lovely pictures of QE2 during her last refit in Southampton, 22 April 2008.

The picture turns up from time to time on our virtual webcam, at the bottom of the Forum's main page.
