Miles by Proxy
« on: Feb 15, 2016, 05:56 PM »
Peter M. had mentioned quite some time ago about QE2 building up miles by proxy as the QE2 jigsaws traveled around the world.

We now have a number of jigsaws, all of which have had numerous "voyages" and it might be fun to try to recreate the approximate number of nautical miles traveled for each and then a cumulative figure, adding to it as each new voyage takes place.

Is this something we can try to do ?

As long as everyone has filled in the logs that are with each one properly, then yes - it should be possible.  It will need to be borne in mind, however, that postal services tend to use hubs so direct distance measurement on Google Earth will give a short figure; the typical hub and spoke system for a given route will need to be determined first - should be do-able as it should be a matter of record which services use which hubs.

This sounds very good, Peter !  Should we start by verifying who has done (so far) each QE2 jigsaw ?   :)

We don't need to - we just need whoever has each to summarise what each log has written in it.  Based on the ones I've seen myself everything has been noted in meticulous detail...

Yes, you are correct that there is a detailed log in each jigsaw.   :)

A challenge will be to work out how far QE2 (by proxy) travelled on QE, while Ian McNaught's son was carrying out a refit on board :) .

Very good point, Isabelle !  and an exciting prospect !

Do we know who has each jigsaw at the moment ?

I think so. And as my two jigsaws (the 1969 ones) are not moving at present, I might call them "home", and we can try and tot up their voyages :) .

Hi Isabelle -

Thanks for your message.  Shall we then start calculations from the logs of QE2 Jigsaws one and two ?

QE?  It was Britannia from the "old rivals"!!!

Yes - though I think it's a fair bet that it would have been the maiden voyage given the timings.  I guess i ought to ask to be certain, though...

I'd love to have one sent to me in Shanghai, but I'd be crushed if the post "failed" as they're known to from time to time here.
