bobso,
I have often wondered what it would have been like to watch the launch of one of the Queens, from the cornfields you talk about. The scale of these wonderous beauties would have been a sight to behold.
It is of interest to me as a horticulturist that 3 oak trees stand in a close line next to these fields to this very day, and they were there when Queen Mary, was launched all those years ago. It just goes to show the longevity of mother nature and the eventual frailness of man and his great creations.

The field across the way from Browns has not changed at all in 200 years... and in that time a great shipyard grew up, changed the world, and then closed down and disappeared completely... i feel this when visiting the place.

The pictures and video's of the launch of the QE2 brought back many happy memories. The first picture showing the stubble field--that is where we carried our new son to see the QE2. Fantastic to see all these again. Thank you so much for posting them

Yes the cars are great too! It's nice to see the flypast aswell. The flypast was replicated on the original 1967 Helena Barynina Hernmarck tapestry that hung on the E stairway
Does anyone know the squadron/aircraft type?-looks too many (and they are grey!) for the Red Arrows who I think flew Foland Gnats possibly then? They could be Blackburn Buccaneers (Royal Navy Fleet Air Arm?)

Yes I think they are Bucanneers Smk2 which flew out of Scotland's RN (now RAF) Lossiemouth at exactly the time of the QE2 launch.  And yes the Red Arrows then flew the Gnat It was then the RAF's fast jet advanced trainer (from RAF Valley) and it was a nasty little thing to fly for inexperienced pilots who had done basic training on the gentle Jet Provost..  I did 120 hours advanced training on the Gnat, some rather scary indeed.  Incidentally the formation in the pic is just 13 Bucs, instead of the usual squadron of 16. Must have had some down for servicing.

As for the tapestry, it was savagely hacked and badly damaged down in 2008 (?) by an angry demented crew member.  Don't think it got replaced.  He was put into the brig and dismissed.

They were the Bucanneers.
A good friend was a Nav in the Fleet Air Arm,
stationed in Lossiemouth at the time, and remembers it well!

Although thre is no QE2SF watermark in the printed photo  ;)

Yes there is - I can see the watermark in both of the photos on the printed page Myles is holding.

And very importantly we can now see exactly where QE2's slipway was.

Her name did not go on the stern till well into 1968. I took shots at the end of August and it still had to go on. I think it was on the bow much earlier.

A Question!
Does anyone know how long it took for the launch of QE2
It was interesting to read that the second Brittanic took just one minute!

Thank you!

Rosie, when you ask how long it took, do you mean how long from breaking the champagne bottle to water entry or some other time span?

Good Question, Bob
Have to say - I did think you might ask it, too!
You'll know more - as others will too
Flagship might even have it on record somewhere...

Don't you think the time would have to be / have been calculated from the very first sign of movement off the stocks,  until the tip of the bulbous bow is also submerged?
Otherwise and less technically, from the crash of the non-bubbly wine, I s'pose

Do you think there would have been someone on the ground to witness and time it?

Hope that all's well with you -
and hoping too, that your desk is less airborne than you might be!
Rosie

Pete

The web site you have given us the link to has some amazing photos of QE2 launch.  I feel like I have been taken back to 1967 looking at these photos.  My friend Maureen was convinced that I was with her on the opposite banks of the Clyde to watch the launch which I was not but how I wish that I had been there.  It must have been amazing to watch her enter the water and to witness the displacement of water as this magnificent ship was launched.

There is a link to this web site on reply 12 of this topic but with some slight amendments so I will keep your link as well.  Thanks Pete for posting

I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

What an absolutely fantastic find, Pete
Thanks so much.

It's interesting to see how high she was in the water including her rudder - and amazing too, to see the work of everything around her,
including the drag chains.

Off topic now, but the final picture (artists impression) shows exactly how Dubai plan to use her  (the original plans).  There have been no announcements of substance to suggest they will change these plans.
