« on: Nov 17, 2011, 09:58 PM »
Cunard have today announced that all Three Queens are to have a tribute to Sir jimmy saville M.B.E , a framed photo of the cigar smoking ,always smiling Sir Jimmy is to be hung in all Churchill"s Cigar Lounges on board.A special tribute to a true Cunarde.
Does anyone know how many cruises he did with Cunard and his much loved QE2

Well done Cunard.  It is nice that they add some modern history such as this, especially since Sir Jimmy did, I think?, travel on all 4 modern Queens.

I thoroughly approve of the "Memorial" to Sir Jimmy. Good on Cunard (for once). Pity people will have to go to the cigar lounge to see it though, which means most will not. Although I appreciate he was the ambassador for the cigar after Churchill himself, making this an appropriate place.

I've stuck my head into all the cigar lounges I think, and they all seemed smoke-free and very pleasant - in fact I think they were right up there with my favourite rooms on the ships.  (I don't like the smell of stale smoke, having grown up in a house where both parents smoked, until they quit).  Its a shame if non-smokers never look into these rooms.

Agreed Rob. Love him or loathe him, he was closely linked with Cunard and it is a nice touch that Cunard 'fixed' it for Sir Jimmy to continue travelling on board for many a year yet!

Jimmy Saville did me a big favor when I was in school, when I was trying to make money for the Army Cadets. Out of 20 DJ's I wrote to...snail remember it? He was the only one that replied...he sent me a recorded message to be played at our function...he was not allowed to do so under BBC regs... I met him on QE2 and thanked him some 15 years later. He actually remembered the name of my school and the fact that he had to work for about 3 days trying to get a tape that would fit my tape recorder! A TRUE GENTLEMAN THAT CARED FOR PEOPLE! But he was also good with people!

In the light of the recent allegations of sexual abuse against him, I wonder what Cunard is doing now about these tributes?

It would be a good idea if they didn't.

Even if the allegations against Jimmy were not true, who could ever again look at a portrait of him without thinking of this scandal?

This is something that Cunard does not need, having their passengers thinking of such things on board their ships.

Hi everyone...  I read something on the We Are Cunard website under the We Are Social catagory yesterday October 10. It was an answer to a question posed by someone on either Twitter or Facebook.  The answer from Cunard was "they have removed and cancelled all tributes".

I do believe the " Tribute Sail-by Scarborough" due to take place onboard QE on her "Round British Isle" trip next year has been cancelled aswell as the portraits that I originally posted about have been removed from all "Churchill Lounges"

There was certainly no sign of his picture in Churchill's when I was on QV a few weeks back

I can confirm, Churchills Lounge is back to just "Churchills" which incidently has an outside area of table & chairs together with ashtrays under a canopy which I am sure wasn"t there last time I was on board "Vicky"

Are you referring to the tables and chairs or the canopy?  If the latter then that's been there since build but the tables and chairs come and go

A reference to Savile being thrown off SS Canberra in Gibraltar, possibly very many years ago
