That is sad news indeed. Please pass our condolences to his family and friends.

From the above, it looks as though he was a very special crew member and will not easily be forgotten by those who knew him.

May he rest in peace.

Sadly Dennis passed away this morning, he had not been well for a while, many of us former crew members have been remembering him with posts on several QE2/FB pages out there.

Hi there, thanks for sharing the sad news here also.  Many people will find this topic including in the years to come, via internet searches, and sad as it is, it helps to complete his QE2 story for those people who knew him, and for those like myself who didn't but appreciate his role on QE2.
Passionate about QE2's service life for 40 years and creator of this website.  I have worked in IT for 28 years and created my personal QE2 website in 1994.

Dennis was a legend..I had the time of my life working with him. He was just so good at making people laugh.
He was also very generous to everyone...if you ever had the privilege to work with him you know what I mean.
He always introduced himself as Dennis Dawson O.B.E. Then say the obe stood for ordinary boiled egg.
And he always said to the girls.."come into my arms you bundle of charms and stick to my lips like treacle"
He was friends with some famous people too and he used to write to Meryl Streep regularly.
He even had his own QE2 club...it was called "The no character Club".and it was an honour to be invited to become a member..I've never forgotten him and I never will. He was a true gent and I am so glad I had the honour of working along side him.
I reckon you could easily fill a book with the things he used to get up to..

We knew Dennis Dawson during the 80s and 90s. We sailed cruises and crossings during that period. John Duffy, Elaine Mackay, Dennis, Dorothy, "Bones" and many others always made us feel at home. QE-2 was family. We did a few cruises including the 2004 tandem crossing eastbound on QE-2, westbound on QM-2. Since then we have made many crossings on QM-2.

Thanks Laurence for posting your memories of cruising and the special crew members.  You are right when you say QE2 was family, you certainly felt like you were going home when you stepped onto QE2.

Looking forward to hearing more your memories and seeing QE2  photos
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

I remember his passing.  Back when, having been on QE2 often enough, I knew who Dennis was.    I think he saw me talking with some of the regulars in his patch.  One chilly before-dinner it seemed he went out of his way to bring me a rug.  Another voyage champagne flowed upon embarkation.  He gave me my own bottle!  I felt I had arrived. :)
