Galley escalator
« on: Dec 09, 2010, 04:30 PM »
Back when the ship was first in service and there was no Upper Deck galley (ah, the Look Out Bar - sigh...) there was an escalator to the Quarter Deck galley that seviced the Britannia restaurant on the Upper Deck.  Was that escalator removed or is it still there (in use?)?

Louis,
Two questions for you.  1) Back in the day (before the mystery box and Upper Deck galley additions) the Quarter Deck galley serviced all restaurants with an escalator connecting the two decks' restaurants.  I see in your arrangement plan that there was a galley also on one deck for the forward crew mess.  Was/are there any physical connections with the Q-Deck galley (dumb-waiters, refrigerators, etc.) or did this operate independently?

Question 2:  Where did you get your arrangement plans and are they available for sale or copy?

Thanks!

Regarding the escalators. They were a health hazard, a fire hazard a safety hazard and any other hazard you might care to mention including a financial hazard. Waiters new to ship movement would very often spill trays on the escalators. All that ended up below the escalators. That was shoveled out, yes, shoveled out about every 2 days by engineering staff. Spilled food led to greasy escalator treads that lead to more spills. Chefs would complain about having to make 3 times more food than the need because it ended up under the escalators!. And so was born the Britannia kitchen! Goodbye Lookout Bar!
