2012 Archive - Pre-order QE2 Story 2012 Calendar
« on: Jul 26, 2011, 10:44 AM »
We are at the planning stages of putting together the QE2 Story Calendar 2012.  This will be a unique item with members’ photos showing different aspects of the ship.   It certainly is a keepsake that you will want to add to your collection.

We have decided to use a local printer rather than an online printing service to ensure that a quality item is produced.

The calendar will be A3 size 16.5 x 11.7 inches or if you prefer metric measurement 420 x 297 mm.  We chose this size so that a good proportion of each calendar page would be allocated to the QE2 photo.

The paper used will be a good quality 300 gsm silk finish for the front and back cover and 150 gsm silk finish for the 12 inside pages.  The calendars will have wire binding and hangers on the top.  Envelopes would also be provided which is useful if you want to send to friends or family as a Christmas present (yes as from today there are only 151 days to Christmas).

But we need to know how many members would be interested in buying a calendar before we proceed much further in the planning stages as the number will affect the price which we hope will be around £9.99.

If you would like to buy a unique QE2 Story 2012 Calendar please add your name below to ensure that a copy is reserved for you!

You might wish to consider a company such as vistaprint, the more you order then less they are. the shipping is fast and the product of an extremely high quality.
I would gladly pay extra to have them posted in a hard backed envelope. Nothing worse than have a bent calendar.

Some of the ones l have bought in the past, nice though they are have been nothing more than photos printed onto photo paper and have the home made look, and from the Isle of Wight.
One of the members on here produced a very nice calendar with nice views of QE2 and Queen Mary, but went onto add the QV....

Myles - I agree with you - Having used Vistaprint for QE2 calenders in the past, they come highly recommended.
They do great offers, lovely reproductions (nothing worse than bad ones!)  use good paper/card, take sterling - and are incredibly economical as well as speedy!
I also have Snapad calendars from family - they too are excellent, although probably cost more.

Please may I order a bit nearer the time?

Yes but if everybody says that, there won't be a calendar at all, and an enormous about of hard work behind the scenes will go to waste.

Why not ask for a deposit to get the ball rolling, you have the paypal donate button which makes things a lot easier
Perhaps the same could be said for the dvds.... would that work?

Or if people wanted to send a UK  postal order (they must be cashed within 6 month) that might perhaps save on the paypal fees, and they can be cashed as and when.

Might this be an idea ?

Its also a good idea to put in a closing date, with no more orders being accepted after such a date...

You also have the option (to save on funds etc) by asking people if they so wish to send in a stamped self addressed envelope which can be stuck on the dvd packet and posted..every little helps

Thank-you everyone for your pre-orders for the Calendar.  I will make up a list tomorrow so that I can keep track of the number of orders.

We have researched a number of options for the printing of the Calendar, including Vistaprint but we feel that the option that we have chosen will give us better control to ensure that the finished product is a quality item.

Myles we have been following up on your idea of asking for a deposit by setting up a test on Paypal.  This would work okay for anyone ordering one calendar where the cost would be £9.99 less £5 deposit = £4.99 plus postage.  But for orders of more than one calendar we need to consider the best way to set up the Pay pal final payment form so that it takes account of the cost less deposit for one calendar and the full cost for second and third etc.

Rob has placed the Pay pal form on the shop for me to test.  I will give you details on this topic area when the deposit option is open.

A closing date will be put on pre-orders once the Calendars go to print.  I will give you more details at the time.

Why not for ease of counting just round it up to a tenner, Im sure we are not fooled into thinking along the lines of supermarkets with the 99 gimmick and a nice round figure would make it easier all round..

Also remember that even though we are paying £10.00 the amount the forum receives will be slightly less than that, In fact it might surprise you to learn you will get £9.40 give or take a few pennies, l just checked and for all my dealings with paypal that figure surprised me, However its fast, easy etc etc.

Im sure most of us would be happy to pay in full upfront and might be a bigger help...
The buyers can of course add a message on their payment invoice.

Thanks Myles.  I was surprised to hear that Paypal gets as much as 6% in commission.  However it is a safe and easy way for members to pay so I guess that we need to accept that Paypal should get commission on the money processed through the system.

I've investigated the charges - this topic got me curious!

The highest they charge is 3.4% + 20p.  Then it goes down, based on monthly sales, but I don't think we'll sell enough to go lower than that rate.

QE2 Story Calendar 2012 update

I thought you would like an update on how the Calendar project is progressing.

The design work is being done on two fronts.  Richard Coltman, one of our Moderators, is working on the design of the front page of the Calendar.  The local printer is doing the individual month pages and the Calendar back page.

I have just received printed samples of the front page and monthly calendar pages from the printers this afternoon.  I am delighted with the results and I am sure you will also be delighted.  We hope to give you a sneak preview of what the front cover will look like within the next week.

The timescale for the Calendar to go to print is the week beginning 10th October,  2011

Our aim is to have the Calendars posted to you by week beginning 24 October, at the latest.  We will keep you updated on this.

Based on pre-orders we will be ordering 60 or 70 Calendars.

We have agreed that the cost of the Calendar for anyone pre-ordering and paying before the end of August/September will be the cost price plus post and packaging charges.

The inclusive charge will be around:
UK = £10.50
Rest of Europe = £11.50
Rest of the World = £14.00

All members who have pre-ordered will be sent details of how to pay and a Paypal link before 30 August

Have you ordered your Calendar?  Please let me know by posting below or send a personal message if you want your name added to the pre-order list.

The inside monthly Calendar pages are equally good.  Because the Calendar is A3 in size half of the page is given to the photo which  shows the photos at their best.  I have draft inside pages from the printer but because they are large files and in pdf format I need to find out how to post to let everyone see them.

Today on board Queen Elizabeth, Lynda revealed the prototype for the new calendar and I have to say I was totally gobsmacked.  It is truly stunning, very very professional, striking and high quality.  You can see it on the table in these photos.  We all owe Lynda a debt of gratitude - she has put in a huge number of hours into putting this together, and still has a lot more to put in, all totally voluntarily.  I thanked you today Lynda, but thank you again!!

If the cover is anything to go by, it really does look stunning, and its larger than l imagined.
I think we all owe Lynda a drink ;D.
Given the number of pre orders its looks to be a sailaway success.

From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

The inside monthly Calendar pages are equally good.  Because the Calendar is A3 in size half of the page is given to the photo which  shows the photos at their best.  I have draft inside pages from the printer but because they are large files and in pdf format I need to find out how to post to let everyone see them.
If you send me the PDFs Lynda I can sort it.

I was delighted with the response I had from Forum members who saw the actual printed draft of the Calendar pages.  It is good to know that you are on the right track when working on something for the Forum.

Last week I sent a PayPal link to everyone who had pre-ordered the Calendar.  Rob has now put the link on the shop page so that the option to pre-order and pay is open to everyone.  The Calendar is being offered at cost price up until the end of September.  After that there will be a slight increase in the cost.

If you want a Calendar now is the time to think about ordering the first ever QE2 Story Calendar.

With thanks to Lynda for her efforts in pulling this together and certainly from what I saw of the drafts last week then can most definitely recommend it.
Start every day with a smile and get it over with

Thank-you to everyone who has ordered and paid for the QE2 Story 2012 Calendar.  We are so pleased with the numbers pre-purchased so far.

If you have put your name down on the pre-order list but have not yet pre-paid for the Calendar please remember that the special price is only available until the end of September.  From 1 October there will be an increase in the cost.

Follow the link to pay and place an order:

Just placed my order - unfortunately my job hours were cut yesterday from 40 hrs per week to less than 10 - so I only ordered one.  But don't fret - I will order the other two next week (I had asked for 3) after I get through the 1st of the month bills!

Thanks - time to regroup and go on I guess!  The bright side - I'll have more time to spend on the forum!

So sorry to hear about your job situation Kathy.  Don't worry I will hold the other two calendars for you!
