Musical send offs!
« on: Mar 25, 2009, 11:44 PM »
Anyone have any memories/knowledge of which bands played a send off and when/what years did these start/finish and get replaced by taped music? Was it just for world cruises/any cruise/crossing? What songs were played? Were they paid/volunteers?

Sadly we did not have any musical send-off on our crossing in 2004 and our voyage in 2005.

Never had any musical band send-off in Southampton -- but quite a few in other places. The earliest and one of the most memorable for us was at QE2's maiden call in Göteborg in 2005. Pia took a lovely photo of it, here :

Most of the others that I can remember were final calls... so Göteborg stands out as a truly joyful occasion!

Nov 11th 2008, Final Voyage to Dubai: I can tell you that the Military Band of the Scots Guards played, both in the QE2 Terminal during boarding and again quayside from 6pm until approx 7.10pm.

Great stuff! Keep em coming
Love the Gothenburg shot Isabelle
Scots Guards-bet they sounded great

Does anybody recall a Southampton musical send off/homecoming (prob not at 5am!) on normal duties? Did QE2 ever have them or was it just really special occassions eg Royalty/Falklands etc?

Another I can add, although again it was a special event.  Band of the Royal Marines played dockside for 1/2 hour, Sat 15th Sept 2007, the start of the 40th Anniversary Round Britain cruise.

Can't remember any bands for the two 'non-special' cruises I've been on ex Southampton.  Then again, I should say that all cruises/voyages on QE2 were special !!

There are a couple of wee videos too but I've not yet got around to uploading them!

Some memories for you:

In 1993 it was band of the Welsh Fusiliers. They gave a performance in the Grand Lounge during lunchtime before playing on the quay as we departed. It certainly made it feel like an occasion and it certainly was for me as it was my first time onboard.

The only other Southampton departure I have seen a band was in 2007 for the 40th Anniversary Cruise. This time it was the Royal Marines and again it made the departure a bit special. I can't remember what they were playing, but I seem to recall Rule Britannia was one of the pieces. I think I have seen a video on You Tube a while back of this departure, it may be worth searching to see if it's still there.

We got a pipe band send off at Greenock that year, it may well have been St Columba's School Pipe Band as they played during the day of the final call to the Clyde. Also in April 2008 a pipe band send off from LA. Bagpipes in the sun, unexpected but nevertheless welcome!

I know I enjoyed a musical send off by a brass band on my trans Atlantic in the early 90's but didn't on my subsequent cruises in '98 and '02 - anyone any ideas when  this practice ceased - apologies if this is another one for your flagship!!

P&O still market a band send off with all their cruises and for me it was a great little touch for departure - would be great if it could be re-started

QE2 had been waiting alongside in Dubai for what seemed like ages...Please don't leave her looking more like a Hotel-with-a-Hull than the greatest Liner afloat - Please restore her Lifeboats and Tenders to where they truly belong - she looks naked without them - please spare her this ignominy.

This was in St John, New Brunswick, on 20 September 2008. It was a wonderful send-off -- one of the best!

Andy, could you please add the URL as well as crediting the photographer? Important for copyright reasons.

What also intrigues me is that the picture looks like one taken either by my sister Pia or by myself...  :-\  ...  or perhaps by someone standing right there with us!

Did they ever play Rod Stewarts "Sailing" when QE2 departed Southampton?

They did here.

The photographer was me. Not sure what you mean by adding the url, the photo is from my photobucket site if that helps.

If you were there at the time, 2008, then you must have been standing near us.

PS

Here's the same band just as they were leaving, viewed from on board. Do you recognise anyone from the cruise?

Thanks. As you say, we must have been standing quite near each other. I remember the lone piper now you have reminded me.

St. John was excellent, but we thought the best send off on that trip was Boston.

Musical sendoffs were few and far between but they used to be very regular (local school bands etc). We restricted them to special departures in the end such as the 40th, final, visit by The Queen etc. On those days we would also make sure QE2 was escorted out by fireboats.

Michael, I thought that QE2 ALWAYS got fireboat escorts out of port, or tugs with firepumps anyway. ;D  Everytime I was onboard or witnessed a departure, she was treated like a Queen.  ;D

Is this service by the tugs and/or fireboats something that Cunard has to pay for extra?  I know the McAlluster tug operators in NYC have a special affinity for QE2, having aided her docking as well as all the other Cunard ships throughout the years.

We did pay extra in all ports but Southampton where they tended to waive the fee!

October 1988 on a cruise to the Med we had the brass band in the Grand Lounge prior to sailing away
We sailed off and the usual band tunes were playing  Sailing ;D, Dambusters ??? Viva Espana ;), ta ra ra boom diay :o  and a few other odd ones....
It was a very stormy night, some little bird landed on the deck and we nearly grounded off the Isle of Wight. Captain Alan Bennell was in command and for me it was just another eventful cruise and we hadnt even left the Solent
Then of course there is the taped music that sometimes plays.... :-X
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

A big band in a lorry (sic!) played for QE2 as she left Zeebrugge for the final time in July 2008 :

https://www.flickr.com/photos/prondis_in_kenya/2706507978/

The big band which played for our departure, had two tunes rehearsed for us -- God save the Queen, and Sailing. Amazingly, they played in a lorry, and as the other lorries looked just the same, we wondered how many other big bands were stored away there, just in case...

Complete with speed stripe!
(Bit of a cheat as the Military Band music accompanies the video clip and not QE2!!)

I recall my mum telling me about a sailaway out East on a Worldy in the early 80s. As she watched from on deck, a local pipe band struck up "Amazing Grace" on the quayside. Mother was a bit misty eyed by the time they reached the end of the tune. Then there was a brief pause, before they launched into......................."Amazing Grace" again. And again. And again and again until the Ship was far enough out to not hear them anymore.

I can remember quite a few musical send offs but most memorable is a "sail in" to New York when there was young college group of singers who sang "America the beautiful" as we were sailing into Manhattan.  Magic!   :)
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank
