A message from an old Concessionaire
« on: May 05, 2011, 10:30 AM »
Dear friends,

I saw this site after a TV appearance by a QE2 aficionado on BBC South Today.

I was a reprobate who existed in the shadow world of the Casino. Highly paid with full privileges "after a fashion". I loved the Black Pig and marvelled at the quirkiness of the hierarchy and strangely British class ridden nature of life on board.

There were some incredibly pompous people on board and some of the most decent people I ever met.

I saw life and death on that ship, what with suicide among the crew and life saving transfers at sea.

I sailed under a British flag for my time aboard and under a British Crew. It may have been cheaper to buy the jobs from the British Seamen as was done but it was always an Icon of our nation. It made a shedload of money too and was as crooked as an Arabs Dagger. It gave audiences to budding talent and Stars on the Wane. I enjoyed every second.

Do I miss her?, no, I miss what she stood for in her hey day.

Thanks for the Memories.

Welcome back on board!  ;D

I'm sure we would all love you to share more of your memories of your time on board if you have time and the patience to do so.
Some on the forum, like me, never sailed on her so any stories of life on board is consumed with interest.

Hi Concessionaire - Welcome to the Forum.  I know what you mean by this statement.  When I was on the QE2 I was a guest of a lecturer so I was a passenger but also an extension of the crew.  During my two weeks on board I had friends who were passengers and friends who were crew members and was very aware of the "class ridden nature of life on board."   Back in 1978 those distinctions created a unique experience for me, a peek into another society which, in my opinion, also made the QE2 distinct from any other ship.

I look forward to reading more about your life on board QE2.

Janice
Whenever I hear a sea story I think of the first time I saw the QE2 and the great adventures that followed.

Hi

I was just wondering when you worked on the QE2...  and what club you came from in London ?

I was on there from 81 - 83... and worked in various casinos for London Clubs..

I have put a few pics up on here let me know if you recognise anyone..

Hello Peter, I played the piano on board and used to hang out with Dennis from the casino, 1978. Some crazy times!
