1/192 scratchbuilt model, work in progress!
« on: Mar 08, 2011, 10:40 AM »
Hi guys,
I've started working on a 1/192 QE2 model, current state, here are a few pics of the building process. I'll hopefully update this post on a regular basis!

Thanks! She's way harder to do than my Normandie https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/index.php/topic,507.msg15862.html#msg15862, I wouldn't have thought so!

Excellent model and model making skill!

Would it be possible for you to include explanations of the process, method and materials being used with each of these photos?

Looks AWESOME!!  Can't wait to see more.  You have got her sexy hull curves perfectly from what I can see!

If I win the lottery, i'll buy it from you!

If you win the lottery Rob you will either have:
1) Enought time on your hands to build your own from scratch
2) Enough money to buy the real one

Fascinating to see the model taking shape and it looks perfect. I'm well impressed!

I would also be interested in hearing more about the different stages of building the model.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank

Hi, thanks for your interest!

I've had a lot of work recently, so I've had to put it aside for a while. There were also many flaws, especially in the stern section which I had to strip and rebuild, the portholes were too big, etc.. So really, right now, she's basically all black (primer paint) and looks a lot worse than on the previous pictures! I'll definitely post more when it's worth it ;)

Very impressive work.  Are you working from a set of builder drawings to achieve the accuracy in scale that you like like you have very much achieved?  Your last post really illustrates the beautiful proportions the original designers worked to achieve on every aspect of the ship, including the bridge.

Thanks! No I unfortunately don't have builder's plans, so I'm working with pictures (put to scale with photoshop), books, drawings, anything I can get! Having been on board helps a lot too... Here are a few updates, still many, many things to do!

Even more impressive!  Can't wait to see the completed model.

Our model maker at the architecture firm where  I work ventured into the world of boat models and found it uniquely challenging, time consuming, but equally rewarding in the end.  If I could only figure out a way to have him build me a QE2 model!  :D  Here's a vid on process.  He did send out the hull to a rapid prototyping shop that took the original lines and produced a flawless hull for him to finish out.

What an amazing model--and a VERY talented model maker. How big is the liner? and are you going to fit it with R.C.?

Bobso - from the quoted scale I calculate it should be a little bit over 5 feet long and about 6½ inches wide?

Hello Peter--thanks for replying to my earlier post regarding the size of the QE2 you are building. Blimey--that is a HUGE model--hope you have room to display it so it can be admired by everyone. Do you intend to light it up?

Only just come across this thread in the forum.

Respect!

To produce that using pictures and no scale plans is quite something.

I note where your workshop is located - I wouldn't be allowed to do that in our house!  :)

I'm curious, was this model ever completed and if so, are there any available pics?

I've just revisited this model build and it's fantastic. I am curious too as to how it finished up. Having just built the funnel at 1:96 scale and only just being comfortable with the result, I am even more impressed by this model. Matdark has done a beautiful job, but where is it up to?
