That looks like an imitation coal fire; it's basically a heatproofed fabric which is coloured to look like coal, dark on top and light grey lower down with red lightbulbs fitted underneath it, probably with a slowly rotating shutter type device to induce a flickering effect as well.

Looks surprisingly realistic when in use.

Can't speak for the luxury suites, as I never saw them, but QE had waist high electric fires in all the cabins.  They weren't designed to look like a fireplace, but rather like some enormous console radio device with the heat coming out what appeared to be a speaker grille.

The picture is taken looking down from above  & you have the rear of the TV ontop of the stand and the Fireplace.
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

Sorry to bother but was it a REAL fireplace or just a "simulation" as Peter Mugridge said?

Hi Myles, When my friend was on the Queen Mary in April 2006 he went for his Sunday Brunch and there was a young lady in the room playing the Harp. Was she there playing the Harp when you visited recently?

Also,--did you manage to walk over the "Rainbow Bridge" which is very close to the Queen Mary and looks great at night when fully lit.

The music was alas no Harpist but rather a lady screeching away some tunes, "Heart and soul" l believe they we called

The Rainbow Bridge, I never got beyond the parking lot, and have yet to explore anywhere in Long Beach. But when l do first stop must be Parkers Lighthouse,

Real as in with coal then No it wasnt. But a simulation then yes it was... I doubt very much it was working,
 But steeped in history.
