The original Q4 logo (before she was named QE2)

See attached.  How long was this used for before it was subtly altered into QE2 ?

Passionate about QE2's service life for 40 years and creator of this website.  I have worked in IT for 28 years and created my personal QE2 website in 1994.

Rob, did you buy this?  The one I purchased on eBay last year had the invitation card inside the envelope, but it is sealed.  I have not attempted to steam it open.  The Q4 logo is quite clever isn't it?  I was longing to see something like this when they were ramping up with all the fanfare for the new cruise ship (Q7?), but with the name already announced, all suspense was lost.

Its obvious that the artist for the Q4 also did the QE2 logo.

Just discovered a letter in one of my boxes. It's from an N J Butterworth and he was a Typographer working for Cunard. On 29 AUgust 1967 he write to The Secretary, Cunard Steamship Company. He wrote:

Dear Sirs

In respect of the artwork now completed by myself depicting an emblem design for the Q4 - The New Cunarder, I assign to the Cunard Steam-Ship Company all copyright in the said design and I agree that the copyright in the said design and in all reproductions of the said design shall be vested in the Cunard Steam-Ship Company Limited.

Yours faithfully

N J Butterworth

The logo for Q4 is simplicity itself
Really clever thinking.
Do you think it was designed by the same person as QE2's own logo?,1009.0.html

It all depends on the question is asked.... Is it ships named after reigning monarchs? ships named after existing British Queens or how many Queens have there been in the Cunard fleet?  To complete the list here are two others that fit, dependant of course on the question and its interpretation.  It is always a good, teasing question....

British Queen (1852-1898)
Queen Victoria - now P& O Arcadia

Not too sure about this, either in relation to a reigning monarch,
or as a sovereign in Cunard's line of succession...
because 'Victoria aka Arcadia wasn't a launched as Queen Victoria
So she doesn't count - or does she?!

(There's a longer topic that relates to this too - no time to find it at the moment, sorry!)
