On 19 February 1966 Cunard's Naval Architects Department produced the following list of Main Items "added to the vessel as a North Atlantic ship for cruising":


  • A number of lifeboats adapted so that they may be used as cruise launches.
  • Certain cargo spaces insulated and refrigerated to provide additional storage space when cruising.
  • Increase in certain storerooms.
  • Passenger embarkation gangway facilities.
  • Outdoor pools.
  • Library covertible to Cruise Office.
  • Additional cruise entrances.
  • Additional morring equipment for Panama Canal.
  • Tendency for cabins to have larger wardrobes etc.
  • Deck buffet and pantries.
  • Larger laundry with consequent additional fresh water storage capacity.
  • Cruise Director's accommodation and office.
  • Increase in kitchen facilities and bedroom service pantried.

The list concluded "In addition to the above, there are many other items"

This is a treat to read - the very 'essence' of QE2

This list brings into context the differences in a cruise ship such as lifeboats adapted to be used as cruise launches. Deck buffet and pantries for when visiting warmer climates. Something we took for granted when onboard QE2
