I really enjoyed the forum get together last year.  It was so good to meet people from the forum and wonderful how well everyone got on together- just like old friends.

Great idea for a forum outing for 2011 and I will look forward to attending.

This sounds quite nice.  I would love to be able to attend.  I've enjoyed the NYC Forum get togethers I attended this past summer (was it summer?).

Thanks so much, Rob
Sounds great!

For info -  accommodation in Greenock is well booked up already -
£700 night (for 2) at the Holiday Inn express - this seemed just a bit OTT!
So have booked at the Premier Inn in Argyle St (8-11 July),
it's close to Central Station in Glasgow
and finding trains to Greenock won't be a problem!

Looking forward already to a wonderful shippie weekend!

Just a word of caution Rob if you are thinking of involving the Waverley, whilst I have no advanced knowledge it is quite possible that the timetable may not follow the traditional pattern during this event.

I know we are at an early stage of planning our forum outing but the Waverley could be an interesting option depending on the timetable.  Do you know when the timetable will be available?

The Tall Ships Race is quite a big event so accommodation in the area may be taken quite quickly.  It would be wise for forum members to think about whether they want to attend and to arrange accommodation early in the New year.

Hi Guys,

We at Clyde Cruises are running tours out around the Tall Ships 2011 from wqithin the site and also out in the Parade of sail, the tickets are only £10 per adult for 45 min tours and £15 per adult for the Parade of sail tour.
We also can do private charter hire, the waverley will be sailing past the Tall Ships but not into the site, we work very closely with the Waverley.

Thanks

Thanks for the information on the Clyde Cruises which is worth considering.  We are at the early stages of organising the event but probably should be firming up on arrangements for the QE2 Story at the Tall Ships week-end before the end of February.  However it would be good to have more forum members committed to coming along to what should be another successful QE2 story outing.

If you are thinking about coming along to the QE2 Story at the Tall Ships Race in Greenock in July and have any questions about the Greenock or Glasgow area please post questions on this topic.

The moderators are working on the planning for the QE2 Story event and are hoping to have some initial details available in February.  However to help with your planning to attend the event I have put together some information that I hope is useful to forum members who are not familiar with the Glasgow/Greenock area.

It would be useful if any forum members have attended a previous Tall Ships Race if they could share photos and stories of their experience.

Road links

http://maps.google.co.uk/

M8 links Glasgow to Greenock.  Google maps notes a travel time of 34 minutes and a distance of 24 miles from Glasgow Central Station to Greenock.  But allowances would need to be made for traffic congestion should there be a high volume of cars travelling to Greenock  for the Tall Ships Race.  Parking could be an issue.  I see that Park and Ride facilities will be available but details will not be available until nearer to the event.

Airports

Glasgow Airport is a distance of 16.3 miles from Greenock.  M8 links Glasgow Airport to Greenock.
http://www.glasgowairport.com/portal/site/glasgow/menuitem.1f8c8b8c3a8f5fdc63f0ec109328c1a0/

Prestwick Airport is a distance of approximately 50 miles from Greenock.  An hour travel time. Prestwick Airport to Glasgow is approximately 30 miles.
http://www.prestwick-airport-guide.co.uk/

Train timetable information

http://www.nationalrail.co.uk/

If staying in Glasgow there is a regular train service to Greenock .  There are two train stations in Greenock on the Glasgow to Gourock rail line.    The Journey time is between 34 and 45 minutes with three trains an hour.  Note the timetable for July is not available at the moment.

Hotel information

It is possible that the hotel accommodation in Greenock will be booked early for this event so you may need to think about booking hotel accommodation in Glasgow.

If you're looking for some reasonably priced accommodation for the Tall Ships weekend, I have booked a room at the Premier Inn, Phoenix Retail Park, Paisley - where you can get room-only accommodation in a single, twin, double or family room for the princely sum of £29 per room, per night. My brother Steven (No 736) and family have also booked there.  Just go to the Premier Inn site and follow the instructions.

I would say £29/night for up to four people was a good deal at the best of times but, bearing in mind the inflated prices being charged by many places during the event, I don't think you can really go wrong!

;D What about hiring on of the Clyde passenger vessels for a group , the only drawback would be the number attending to pay for this.

Its a good idea, but I don't think we'll have enough numbers to do have a vessel just to ourselves!

The following is a proposed itinerary for the Friday 8 July and Saturday 9 July QE2 Story annual gathering.  We welcome your comments and ideas.

Friday 8 July - drinks at the Crowne Plaza, Glasgow 7.30 pm to late or later!

Saturday 9 July

An ideal day out!   ;D

10.00  - SS Waverley from Glasgow to Greenock 10.00 to 12.00.  Sailing down the Clyde past QE2's birthplace.  £13.00 per adult.

This can be optional for members.  Those who want to meet us in Greenock can do so.  Members would need to book the Waverley (same as last year)

12.00 – arrange for members not on the Waverley to meet us as we come off the Waverley to say hello.

12.00 to 15.00 time for everyone to explore on there own.  Have lunch etc.

The Tall Ships website  is about to be upgraded and will provide additional information but the information we have been given so far is that there will be a craft fair and also a range of other stalls and exhibits. Some ships will open to the public.  At present we do not know which ones!

15.00 Clyde Cruises to the Tall Ships (45 minutes) £10.00 per adult (members will probably need to book this themselves.  However  we will find out if we can have a block booking that we pay nearer to the time).

Clyde Cruises  have stated that "The tours will be running on the hour, every hour lasting for 45 mins.
They start at 1200 - 1700, tickets are £10gbp per adult, £5 gbp per child/concession (over 65s).

We are the only vessel company that will be running from within the actual tall ships site, so you will have unrestricted views of the class a,b and c vessels."

Given that there is a The Tall Ships  opening ceremony at 14.00 we could arrange the Clyde Cruises for 15.00

17.00 meet up point to be arranged.  Members walk to the Tontine Hotel for meal at 17.30 pm.  Drinks after meal then members make their way home.  We have a sample menu which we will post later if we decide to go with this option.

This would give us meet up options as follows:

10.00 Glasgow on the Waverley to Greenock
12.00 At Greenock as we come off the Waverley
14.00 Either at the Welcome Ceremony or Clyde Cruises
17.00 Walk to the Tontine for Meal.
17.30 Meal and drinks.

If you are interested in coming along please put your name on the "roll call"

Tontine Hotel menu attached.  If there are over 10 people the Tontine are asking for a £5 deposit per person.  If this is where we want to go Rob may be able to set up a PayPal option from the forum so that members can pay their deposit.

It would be good to get some feed back on the options that have been proposed.

I have booked Waverley from Glasgow to Greenock to ensure a place.  Anyone wanting to join us on the Waverley for this part of the TQS annual event?

I thought the menu at the Tontine looked good and it will be a nice way to meet up at the end of the day.  But I need to book soon so if you are joining us and you have not put your name on the roll call please do so as soon as possible.

See below for link to Waverley web page.  The short trip from Glasgow to Greenock leaving Glasgow at 10.00 am on 9 July is the one to book.

Thank you so much, Lynda
Your hard work requires a well earned holiday!
Having booked for the 10.00 sailing on Waverley,
heading off just now to look at train times to return from Greenock to Glasgow...
Will anyone else need the details of these, too?
