Hollihedge, assuming there are no engineering works on the day it is possible to do that by train:

08.20 from Birmingham New Street - Carlisle 11.03 change there for 11.11 to Glasgow Central arrive 12.32.

18.40 Glasgow Central - Birmingham New Street 22.40.

If you do try this, don't miss the 18.40 as it's the last one south...

There is then the 43 minute train from Glasgow Central to Greenock leaving at  12.35 or 13.05.

For the return journey you would need to leave Greenock West station on the 17.26 train at the latest.
