Not ALL ships have them totally exposed, but that is an excellent question.  'll post a pic of one of the Costa yellow funnels.  There is a black band of bars at the top that conceal the exhausts.

It's mostly form and not function. The shape of the funnel and it's aerodynamic interaction with the superstructure drives design. The extended pipes are just the architects artistic touch on the design.

While the Costa Magica won't win any beauty contests, I did like photographing the funnel.  :)  These were taken just at sunrise, before the ship attempted to enter the narrow channel into Bermuda.  Only a few ship nuts were up to see this.

I can also report that without any scoops or any other aerodynamic add-ons, the aft end of the ship would have soot on the decks in the morning.  Running my hand over the teak rails early that morning, they, along with the deck, had a fine film of black covering everything at the stern.

Having just seen the shots of the QE floatout on another thread, I think she is more than qualified to be listed in this thread as well!

Oh!
Interesting - isn't the golden Rule meant to be 'function first', then form?!

One would think but there are always trade-offs for one reason or another.

One trade-off on QM2 with the scoops and shortened funnel is she looks like she's got elephant ears. :o  i personally would have made them shorter and dealt with a little bit more soots on the decks.  I wonder if they aren't as effective at slower speeds?

Re: Kaguya - well, end on to a long swell the hogging and sagging are going to be rather interesting...

Mind you, I suppose she looks better than that proposed triangular thing I found yesterday....!!  ( Managed to save the thumbnail from the Google search ).  Looks like it has a 747 parked on the roof?!

I just found an interesting perspective of the Burswood Casino here in PER, and i havent noticed untill now, but the Casino & Hotel looks like the stern of a modern day cruise ship! Buildings and ships should not look alike!! Have a look!

"Buildings and ships should not look alike....."
And if they do, it's a sad reflection on their designers - and their knowledge of good looking 20th Century ships!
I feel really sorry for ships  that are building look-alikes - they can't do anything to help their appearance ;)
