Crew cinema
« on: Sep 09, 2010, 03:29 PM »
Does anyone have any photos of this area? It was located adjacent to the crew mess (prior to 1986/87). Not sure what happened to this after the big refit though. By that time, some of us had installed video players and TV's in our cabins.

Perhaps someone with some deck plans could post the area concerned on here? Oh how I'd love a proper set of deck plans to look at!!!

Hi Beardy,
When I first joined in the early 1970s the crew cinema used to be set up on two deck aft in the baggage area, on trans Atlantic crossings the screen and camera used to jump and shake all over the place but at least it was a movie to watch and something else to do. John.

I remember the cinema well. A noisy aft baggage area as John said. The projector used to project onto the back of the screen. There was just enough room between the screen and the projector for a few seats if the room was crowded and you could watch the mirror-image of the movie from there.
We were usually charged 50p or $1(US) for the show. I remember seeing many movies there although the two that come to mind was a terrible horror flick called 'Frogs'  ;D and Peter Fonda's 'Dirty Mary - Crazy Larry'.

Being so far aft the noise of the props and wake meant the volume had to be turned way up to compensate. You had to bring your own refreshment and there were always groans when some late-comer came up the lift and opened the noisy gates and ruined the blackout with the lift lights.
