WOuld this be a good idea?

Just talking about our darling QE2 today.....

Instead of her sitting there for some 600 odd days doing absolutely nothing......

Do you think it would have been a good idea taking into consideration the financial troubles of Dubai.......if CUNARD were to LEASE back QE2 ( prob too late now)....and have her operational again...and Dubai pick up the tabs for any maintenance etc...with maybe an agreed percentage of profits?  I think it could have been a very viable proposition...maybe this time last year...think it may be too late now...as we don't know how the ship is on the inside...  personally it wouldn't worry me in the least as long as I can sail on Qe2 again.....but it would have been worth thinking about considering the profit CUNARD made from her in her last 2 years,...it would certainly put CUNARD in the news.. whilst not giving them the final responsibility of what do do with an aging ship......give Dubai a bit of breathing space and make an awful lot of people very happy....

If this became a reality tomorow I would be first in the queue to sail on her and I think a lot of other people would too..

Would you?

Who would make the move.....Cunard  or Dubai?

Which of the two want less egg on their face !!! Remember its Shanks who said that QE2 held the Cunard brand back and now we are left with a shipping company steeped in history and the youngest fleet in the world who are trying to attract the new breed of passenger. Can you see him wanting QE2 back ?

Then we have Dubai who appear to be spending a whole load of money every month and whatever they are doing is being kept to themselves, their pride wont allow any backdown in what is seen as a failure of their grand plans for QE2. But we are being told there are no plans to move QE2 from Dubai, and its been the same old song since day one.

I thought the leasing back concept made sense back in 2008, when the economy crumbled and also the man-made island was not yet ready for the ship.  Leasing back the ship could have given Cunard the opportunity to squeeze even more money out of us QE2 fans with more final farewell voyages and would have bought the new owners some time to finalize conversion plans and the building of the island.  It just seemed a complete waste to have the ship leave service before being forced out with the SOLAS requirements in 2010.  Of course, I was hoping to get in a few more times onboard before that date.  That was then.....

I think it would have made sense to do this until closer to when the new Elizabeth was ready - they could have kept 3 ships worth of 'white star' crew trained up & ready to go.

I think if they'd announced the sale to Dubai, then continue to operate her, it would have been clear to all that she was 'on the way out', and therefore if certain people at Cunard <cough> felt she was no longer up to scratch, they could explain it away that way.  I think QE2 would have been popular for those 3 years and could have been marketed appropriately.  Her retiral could have been summer 2010 with her crew moving across to the new Elizabeth.

I think, however, the sale & the plans were too far down the road when the true depth of the recession became clear and I'm sure Cunard would not want her back just now, even if paid to have her - I'm sure having 3 big ships to fill is enough for them!

I agree with all you say Rob.....but they arent going to stop at 3 ships......and as you say how can they fill 3....wait till they get 13!! It will just go on and on....churning them out.

Cunard is just a brand now like  t bags....its not unique and special anymore...that all left with QE2...i think they are spoiling it.with this 'branding nonsense'...it just cheapens it.....

But I suppose they are trying to keep up with the competition out there.which is understandable for any business......but had they just thought about it for a while they didn't need to with having QE2 on their side..  She could have had been made a totally separate part of the Company if they wanted to bring out all the new builds......ah well....too late now.

The new ship is expected to be the last new cruise ship for the British market for years to come.

I think they may well have to stop at 3, the way things are going.

I am sure 3 is enough for them at this point in time. Money would be the number 1 factor and having a close knit fleet as they have done before makes sense, trying to keep it intimate.

By the looks of it they cant even do  that, In all my years l have never booked a cruise and had this onboard spending money thing, Now it seems to be the norm, and do we see any attempt to lessen the single suppliment Nope! It would be a great chance to try to recapture that market. Is it too much to ask to look in a brochure and see at a glance what you can expect to pay for a cabin stateroom, rather than get the calculator out and figure out, In the olden days we singles just looked at the single grades and had no need or care to see what the couples were paying.

Im with Rob on the idea that QE2 could have been eased out over the past 3 years and the New ship could have been gently introduced to the awaiting world ::) There are still people who want the old fashioned service, and yes lm one of them, lm maybe getting too old for all this glitz and glamour, if we want that stuff we can go over to "that" companies with the dine around options.
The crew would have continued in their high standard of service and loyality, on the 11th November l spoke with a stewardess who l first met away back in 2002 and asked her what her plans were, was she being moved to another ship and what surprised me was she hadnt been told what was happening. Now is this anyway to treat a loyal crew member and she wasnt the only one! Now if thats how they treat the crew, heaven help the poor passengers guests.

As for cheapening the brand loyality, Look at Burberry, it was once a deluxe luxury product. now you see the burberry check on every chav on the council estates, and its mostly fake !!! Is this the way Cunard is going...    and lm probably way off topic here

you are so right Myles

Cruising is not a luxury product any more either....hence the churning out and t bag branding....

shame really....

Cause we just get left behind as nobody wants us or OUR MONEY so it seems!
