After QE2 had left the shipyard there were problems with crew accommodation with some complaints being made about their location and noise experiences. All kitchen ratings were berthed in 22 cabins on Five deck aft and representations, supported by the National Union of Seamen, were made about the standard of the cabins. It was decided to overcome the problem in two phases. The first phase was to spend £50 on each room and supply a fitted carpet, upholstered chair and curtains and bedspread of the same standard as the petty officers. The second phase involved replacing metal furniture with wood and that would be undertaken at a later date.

In March 1969 - as QE2 was laid up in Southampton - 150 cooks and members of the catering staff went on strike before QE2 sailed on trials in protest over the noise and vibration in their accommodations. It was decided to scrap 10 berths with the occupants being assigned berths in passenger accommodation permanently.
