Shipyard leader Jimmy Reid dies
« on: Aug 11, 2010, 11:36 AM »
Extremely sad to hear this this morning.  Jimmy Reid is very famous here, for what he achieved in the 1970s, saving Upper Clyde Shipbuilders, including the renamed John Browns, from closure by holding a 'work in' which forced the government to change plans for immediate closure.

If anyone had had the common sense to leave some of the old John Browns buildings intact, they would have their flags flying at half mast today.

Sorry to hear that Rob. He appeared in the recent Liners series on BBC4. It was good to hear the unions point of view. Just a shame the trades within the yards started to fight each other, such a waste of skilled and talented people. I believe the government wanted the yards closed no matter what!

I read the sad news on the online Herald this morning.
He was a local hero, a proud Bankie and an extremely intelligent and articulate man.
