Bill Meldrum, QE2 Engineer Officer 1995-1999

Hi all, qe2'ers.

My name is Bill Meldrum and I worked as an engineer officer with Cunard from 1995 to 1999. I have fantastic memories of the qe2 and all the great people I met whilst working on-board. I knew most of the engineer and deck officers, and a number of the crew and passengers that sailed on the ship from 1995 to 1999. I also worked on the Cunard Countess and Cunard crown dynasty on and off during these year, but neither could come close to matching the queen. She was by far my favourite ship. I always get pangs of nostalgia when I think about her and all the great times I had on-board.

I remember joining the ship as an officer cadet in Southampton in 1995 along with my fellow cadet Chris Donaldson just after it has been hit by hurricane Luis whilst crossing the Atlantic and part of the top half of the ship had been caved in by a gigantic wave.

I left the sea life to settle down in 1998 and I am now a lawyer, but when I am sitting at my desk sometimes I remember the great times and the people I met in the navy with Cunard.

Hello Bill... great to see you here. I hope we'll be able to chat about the Engineering dept sometime. I was onboard from 1984-88 and ended up working in the SCR. Did the big refit in Bremerhaven but really enjoyed working on her most when driven by steam.
You might be interested in the forum topics regarding the last steam crossing and engine room memories. I'll try and post the links here in a moment.

Hope these links work...
