Fligship,
Thanks for these photos.  It answers my question in the "QE2's Mast" topic about the mast going up on 3 major pieces: The black base and lower radar platform, the section shown in the photo and the crown.

Great shots.

There a door at the bottom at the front, and a ladder that goes up the inside. This allows maintenance on the whistles and nav lights. However to get to the Radar Scanners you had to clip a ladder, kept in the barn, to the bottom rung of a series of  external welded on rungs on the port side. To get to the top you had to rig a bosuns chair and that was a job for the A/B's. The other function of the signal mast was an air vent for the galley to lift cooking smells up in the clear.

This was as close as l got to the mast  Through one of QE2s magic doors.
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

I just love this picture posted by Michael of the mast being lifted into place in October 1968. You can imagine the instructions being shouted - left a bit right a bit!

Fifty-five years ago this week the mast was lifted onto QE2. Quite an occasion to see the iconic mast on the ship for the first time.

Michael Gallagher has shared photos with us on the initial post of this topic.  Have a look!
