Do we REALLY need football coverage on a cruise?
« on: Apr 15, 2010, 11:39 AM »
Ok....I'm a woman...I don't like football....but.....is it REALLY necessary to have the full coverage of the world cup available onboard?  Are the cruise lines so desperate they want all the footie fans on board their super so called KLASSIE ships?  What a joke.  If you are so into the football you stay at home..you have known  for YEARS when its happening. A Cruise is to GET AWAY from all things shore based...why have a moby phone to tell your pals you are sailing down the solent? Is it really necessary to email home every day??  If your house is burning down or your dog has died you will be contacted thru the ships company communications. It's pretty simple nowadays...morse code is a bit dated now...but would still work in an emergency I' m sure!

But then maybe I'm just an old fashioned git that likes to have cruising as it should be...a total get away from real life...a holiday...to refresh and recharge the batteries ready for shore life again after a few weeks pampering.

Is there a Cruise line out there that will NOT have any coverage of the Election....If so I'm booking RIGHT NOW!

The World Cup is a big tournament for all footie fans and I would think there would be a full scale riot onboard if there was no live coverage of the matches, especially the English games. I am assuming that it will be on in the cabin tv's and one public lounge. My advice would be to avoid the lounge that has the football match on and enjoy the rest of the ship you are cruising on. Lucky for me, I am on Artemis in December and there will be no live sporting events then. (although I am a huge football fan)

If it's the World Cup or the European Championships, very definitely yes. It's such fun watching this in the company of those who know something about football (which I don't), and such fun watching that company at least as much as the game  ;D  . And it's also easy to stay away from if you don't fancy it.

On Caronia, they showed it live on the film screen in the theatre, and on QE2 in the Golden Lion. Both quite different, but both definitely worth being around for  ;D . I shall miss the experience this year... have almost never watched the World Cup except on QE2 (or Caronia)!

No we dont need the live coverage lark. Im not  a football supporter and on one cruise on QE2 l was on there were a couple of football games being shown live in the Golden Lion.It might have been some final or cup special,But can you imagine having wined and dined in the Mauretania and to leave and to be faced with the mass frenzy in the pub. Granted there was a small buffet of pies and sausage rolls which begged to be tasted, and yes they were delicious ;) It was one of the few times l grabbed a hold of one of the ladies arms from our table and begged to be escorted through this mob   formal dressed gathering of football fans.
Mindyou l did find out it was much easier when asked if l had seen the match to say yes, as opposed to my normal answer of Why, who was playing...
Of course nobody forced me to go that way, and then again if they had decided NOT to screen it..... :o

I think it was on the 5 days channel islands cruise just before the last med cruise, there was nearly a ruiot in the golden lion when after a show of hands the footie was turned off ! I did PRETEND to be gutted at the loss of the footie match ! <G>

I just think that if you are such a big football fan why do you book a cruise at the same time the matches are scheduled....?  Everyone knows when the world cup is on....just seems a bit daft to me.....

Each to their own!
The only thing on QE2 I might have swapped watching Scotland play for
would have been lessons in sword dancing!

Then again when other passengers ask you if you saw the match, l just replied "No who was playing" It works very well onboard and better on land. And its best not to go into any pub with any football playing especially  if your on a date..

Simple, to get the best of both worlds.  Spoiling yourself with watching the game then enjoying the other pleasures...what could be better!

Goooooooooaaaaaaaaalllllllllll!!!!!!!

Of course we need it! Otherwise, the ships would remain empty for a month, as everyone would be watching the games at home...

And looking back, watching the football on board QE2 and Caronia was such a happy and enjoyable and even amusing experience that I have great memories of those times still :) .

And for those not interested in the game -- there is so much else going on on board to enjoy!

Sounds enjoyable Isabelle!  :) I take it they showed it in the Golden Lion like on current Cunarders?

I doubt I am going to be watching European football on a cruise or a crossing, however I have no problem if other people enjoy it and want to watch it. So they should keep it.

Yes exactly, Adam.

And Hank, I don't think they would bother to show the ordinary club competitions, but the World Cup (starting in just a few days' time) and the European Cup (in two years' time) are important enough to get everyone excited!
