3D model of QE2

Hi all,

Let me introduce myself. I'm Thijs Morlion and I'm a Belgian student Digital Arts and Entertainment. One of our courses is 3D and for the exam in June we need to model a civilian vehicle of the sixties. So we have the choice between boats, airplanes, cars etc...

Now, I'm fond of ocean liners and I've chosen to model the Queen Elisabeth 2. The only problem I have is that I don't find enough good reference on the interent to model it in a sufficient way.

That's why I contact this forum. Maybe some people on this forum can help me with blueprints, sideviews, top views, front views and backviews of this mighty ship. Technical plans are also welcome, everything that I can use to get a good view of what the shape and such is looking like.

Also detail pictures of the decks and such (like the lifesaving boats, windows, the deck itself, floor, etc...)

Another important thing for you to note is that Queen Elizabeth 2 in this case, has a Zee, rather than an ess!!
It's an easy mistake to make - as in other situations/ languages, Elizabeth has been spelt the other way. 
You'll need to get it right for your exam work! Looking forward to hearing how you get on!

Thanks a lot already for these two websites! It's already a start.

First I'll get as much as reference as possible because I think the Queen EliZabeth 2 (sorry for the wrong spelling in my previous post ) is a hard ship to model in 3D because of the huge amount of details!

Nevertheless, I'll give it a try! Looking forward to more replies and help! The virtual tour I found on that website is really really good reference, all those details I found are very helpful. But that will be usefull for finishing te details of the deck, first I need to get the allround shape!

    What year of the QE2 are you modeling?  You probably already know she's had many configurations since 1969 starting with the addition of penthouse suites in 1972 and many, many more over her 40+ years.  The most significant modification was in 1987 when, most noticeably, her funnel and aft seeping decks changed  significantly.

Let us know what year you are interested in and we will steer you in the right direction.  Not to influence your decision but I prefer her original 1969 look which seems to be in line with the description of your assignment.

There are lots of folks on this site willing to help you with photos, deck plans and most anything you need.  Of course we sincerely hope you will post a link of your finshed product on this board!

The teachers set a limit from 1959 until 1971, so I think your suggestion is quite good
I don't know a lot about all the modifications to the QE2, therefore I'm here to get enough information to model this as accurate as possible.

If I consider it possible to model all this in the short time left until June, I'll certainly will do my best to get a finished model!

So, the model of 1969 you suggested is fine!

Hi there.
As for photo. there are loads on the net of her. You must be awarer she has changed a lot ,so know the mods she has had for that period in time and see if that photo applies .For aerial photo use Google earth  ,there is a thread on here some were that shows some of her locations.
For plans. I know of only 1 set they are not that detailed. There are deck planes in old Cunard travel brochure.
The most photo of her on the net show her post 1987.
One place to try is the transport museum in Glasgow which has the builders model .

I'll save them on my pc to have a big collection of reference. The link to the photogallery where they show some pictures of the QE2 being build is also very usefull. It has some good shots in it which shows how the shape of the ship looks like!

But I see the front and the back of the ship has some difficult shapes, but I get a good view on that because of those photo's

Also, COS918's mention of this link - http://picasaweb.google.com/stowaway2k/VintageCunardPRPhotosOfQE2# - is probably the best web resource I've seen on the original 1969 QE2.  I would use this extensively.  

Also, don't forget the basics - length, width, height and so on.

What modeling software are you using?  We use AutoCAD, Revit, and Sketchup at work in the architectural office I work at.  I have a little modeling project underway to render QE2 back in the fitting out basin where she was built in Clydebank and would be interested in your digital model when completed.  Good luck with the project!

We use 3D Studio Max, wednesday we need to say to the teachers what whe are going to model, so then they approve or dissaprove our project. Hopefully they approve it!

I don't know if I may give the model away because all the rights on our work is reserverd for our school. But I'll do what I can

I started modelling and I notice it will be a tough task but I'll will do it

I will post work in progress on this forum often so you guys can correct me were necessary. If anyone has some good technical drawings (with good I mean, not pixelated) they're welcome!

Here is already one try-out, it needs a lot of correction, but I did it for getting some kind of overall shape.
