When was that Michael?  Was it hot in there?

What a memory!

Amazing views -- particularly the amount of space there is in between the funnel pipes!

One thing is clear at least -- where it was... Lisbon. Were you looking out the top of the funnel?

Tell us more, Michael!     ;D

Now the Funnel commence.....

Seriously what great photos, Could you in effect pop your head out the top?
We know the funnel was expanded in the 86/87 refit going by the photos did it really need to be so wide?
Not that there is anything wrong with it. Did you find it pretty hot in the casing?
Cheers

Oh did you only take these 5 photos...... ;)

It was hot and noisy but very clean until we got up to the top. The view was amazing and we returned with blackened hands, jeans and faces. Well worth it. Isabelle was correct - it was Lisbon during her last few months in service.

Great views!
It's so good that you took your camera!

I wonder whether you could tell us how many of those huge 'exhaust pipes' you could see?
And the ladders - were they hot too?
She must have needed her chimney sweeping quite often!
Visiting up there in the dark, it could have been a bit hazardous...
I wonder whether stowaways ever tried it out!
QE2 had been waiting alongside in Dubai for nearly 12 years.  Please restore her Lifeboats and Tenders to where they truly belong - she looks naked without them - please spare her this ignominy.

Amazing photos and views that you don't see everyday.  I'm sure someone will want to purchase them someday for a QE2 book.

Awesome, thanks!

Absolutely amazing stuff Michael, thanks so much!

I take it that it was unusual for anyone to be inside the funnel, especially when the ship was on the move!?

The view from the top is amazingly high too... looks like you were in a helicopter!

When I was looking for something completely different on the Forum I came across Michael's topic about climbing inside the QE2 funnel with the photos to prove he had "been there and seen it"

What an amazing experience!  :D

It used to be pretty hot up there when she was a steam ship. In those days the funnel was much taller and slimmer by proportion - it was nicknamed "The Penguin" !

(Have a look at the older pictures to appreciate why)  :)

Brilliant photos. You must have had a thoroughly good time.

Sorry for digging up an old topic but it's just occurred to me that I would have been on QE2 when these photos from the funnel were taken if they were taken in early July 2008! Lisbon also happens to be my favourite port with its own "Golden Gate" type bridge. I recall finishing at primary school slightly early (I started secondary school in September 2008) in order to go on my last QE2 trip which was in July 2008 suggesting it was the earlier of the two Mediterranean cruises QE2 apparently did that month. Talk about coincidence!
First sailed on QE2 in August 2003 aged 6 years old. Last stepped foot and sailed on QE2 in July 2008. Last saw the seagoing QE2 in person from the decks of QM2, on QE2's last Transatlantic crossing (Eastbound tandem) in October 2008. Visited QE2, in her new life, in Dubai back in January 2020.
