Paul Tumilty : Hello
« on: Aug 08, 2020, 10:11 AM »
Just joined and like many others, by accidentally finding the site. My name is Paul Tumilty and I first joined the QE2 in Barbados the morning after the QE2's rescue of the passengers of the Antillies in January 1971. As a Navigation Cadet I was sent straight to the bridge to record the various launch movements. Suddenly, a deep voice behind me said: ' Don't ever let me catch you doing that again on my ship!' Turning I found Commodore (Bill) Warwick glowering at me! My crime was using a pair of binoculars without placing the safety strap over my head! (And quite right too!). I remember thinking ' Oh God! This is going to be my life from now on!'
But of course it wasn't. I was fortunate enough over the following years of my training to be sent to the QE2 on several occasions between 1971 -1973. Fantastic ship, fantastic crews. Life changing experience.

Welcome and thanks for sharing your story of your first encounter with Commodore Bil Warwick, I can imagine that as a young cadet you would have been thinking - not a good start.

Looking forward to hearing more about your experience onboard QE2, especially as you served on the ship during her early years.
I was proud to be involved with planning QE2's 50 year conference in September 2017 in Clydebank
