Caught this image of her battling her way through force 10 winds and very high seas!

Cheers.

I noticed that on the bow cam today also - the people onboard now realize why it was cheaper to cross at this time of year . . .

About  the storm yesterday...

Thanks for the forecast. The bad weather just seems to continue. Just now I spoke to the librarian before we went on closed circuit TV and he said that it took him two hours to put the library and bookstore back together this morning.

We slowed to 18 knots while the captain reported to the passengers in a TV spot before me that several other vessels in the area were hove to for about 12 hours.

Now, the wind has come around to the North so the stabilizers are handling the rough seas. The ocean surface is beautifully streaked, and when there is sun and moisture, there have been some beautiful rainbows including a complete arc. It also hailed hard this morning while my wife and I were standing on deck, and we had to duck for cover.

While, of course, I enjoy it, the constant movement is very tiring after a couple of days.

Good blog here and on the NY site too, much appreciated!
Thank you.

Was this storm the same storm that slowed Oasis of the Seas to a crawl?  I cannot wait to see photos and video fo the QM2 plowing through this storm when passengers get them uploaded.  I'd be sitting in the Library taking it all in with a big grin on my face.  ;D

Here's a day by day account of the current QM2 crossing in which Captain Bates has stated that the weather encountered was the worst the ship has ever been through.

I do think this crossing will answer any question whether QM2 is a worthy successor to QE2 and worthy of the Cunard name.  Must have been quite a ride!

I think, reading that, should cast away any doubt about whether QM2 is really a liner or knot!  Fantastic, wish I'd been aboard.  I must admit, I cant resist liking the idea of fish & chips in the Golden Lion with the raging Atlantic outside, or a glass of wine in the Chart Room perhaps.

I think she is a liner. She doesn't look much like a small wading bird.  ;)

Sorry, I couldn't resist. I'll get my coat.  ;D

I like being comfortable when I am on a ship, although I don't get seasick I don't really enjoy being thrown around like a rag doll, so I'd like to be on the best-designed ship for rough weather so I think QM2 would be my first choice for a sea voyage at this time of year.

No-one on board here remembers the weather ever being as rough as it has been, so this is very unusual and so is unlikely to be repeated.

but...didn't QE2 experience similar conditions?! ;)

And got a bit bashed for her pains. I remember seeing her after a stormy crossing, with railings bent, etc.

Terrible weather, though, recently, both in the Atlantic and here. We had 100mph winds on the Isle of Wight yesterday.  :o

I've been searching for video of this crossing.  This is probably just the first of many to follow. WOW!

Don't forget just how much higher her bow is off the waterline compared to our QE2.

I wonder if the Captain handed out certificates to all the passengers on this crossing, memorializing the storm.  All those onboard should be inducted into the Winter Crossing Club!

:P Yes, I think that proves she has the guts to take the rough stuff. I would rather be riding QMary than the latest Ugly of the Seas!

She certainly did - on the 19 April 2004 Westbound crossing. We had actual water, rather than spray, landing in the balcony on 8081.

She handled it very well, naturally. And QM2 was slowed on that trip, IIRC. She was three days ahead.

I was on this crossing and I was surprised by the comments made by Capt Bates - I seem to recall that the maiden trans Atlantic to New York in 2004 with Commodore Warwick at the helm was much rougher - or was it that he didn't reduce speed as much as everyone wanted to see how the new ship handled in rough weather?  I certainly remember a lot of china got smashed and deck furniture lost.

For those who really look forward to rough crossings (yes I booked this trip especially and was not disappointed) the planetarium show is certainly enhanced by some serious pitching - and the view from the 'scenic' elevators is simply breathtaking - it's also a real boon being able to watch things from the bridge viewing gallery.

Hi Rough Crossing
Thank you very much for posting.
Can't help feeling extremely envious!
Sounds as if the experience well beats IMAX!
Were you able to see any other ships that weren't coping as well as QM2?
Rosie.

Afraid no - I didn't see any other ships - but then visibility wasn't very good!

ok all point taken!

She has well and truly proved her sea legs with some amazing you tube footage to prove it for us all.

The only outstanding point for me is the drumming down of the Cunard service, but that's for another thread.
