How would you change QM1?
« on: Sep 22, 2009, 12:38 AM »
Learning from the mistakes of QM1's conversion in 1968 (too much ripping out, poor use of space, etc) and QE2's experiences over the last 10 months - if the sky was the limit, how would you change QM1?

Lots of history was lost in ripping out her engines and boilers but would replacing them, non-operationally, be worth it?

Is she worth re-doing or is her relevence lost in today's culture?

I'm intersted in your thoughts.

For me this ship is in very bad condition no maint, decor or space very misused addition of elements that have nothing to do on board exemple the restaurant located on the promenade deck,  remove the Russian submarine ... etc. and lots of thing.. my last visit I was sad and furious !! why they put some polisteren ceiling? or other horrible thing on board?

I know what you are talking about. I stayed 2 nights onboard on A Deck in one of the refurbished rooms in the original 2nd Class passenger accomodation area.  Other than the sloping floor (due to the sheer of the ship) and the portholes, very little was done to preserve the QM charm.  It was just a refurbished room that took up the area of at least 2 original staterooms (and did ot follow any original plans except for main bulkheads) with a porthole.  It and those like it could have been done so much metter.

You might enjoy the following link--it's all about one vision  of making QM relevant as an attraction, including renderings of various sections of the ship.  Great historical reference also. http://www.sterling.rmplc.co.uk/visions/

One can only hope that the new owners of QE2 have seen this site and given consideration to the points raised as lessons learned from the gutting of Queen Mary's engine rooms and other areas.  This site seems to present a very well thought out approach for saving the Mary and allowing her to become the star attraction that she deserves to be.

The new paint job on her hull and funnels.looks stunning .
And lets call her Queen Mary  >:( call me pedantic, There is only one Queen Mary and shes in Long Beach. the other thing is Queen Mary 2 often referred to as QM2 or Scary Mary or whatever
From the moment you first glimpsed the Queen,
you just knew you were in for a very special time ahead.!

The new lease holders for QM seem to be fixing most of the main issues with her, new paint is being laid, and most of the corrosion is being dealt with; However, if I had any hand in her original conversion I would have kept more of her engine rooms and core structures in, seeing as the museum that was meant to fill the space never came to fruition.
