Onboard Furniture...

The Chair used for the Queen's Visit 1977....
link not active

I wonder whether it has an interesting history?
Ex university?...church - or other establishment?
It looks as if it could be one of the oldest 'things' on board
(or could it be a reproduction!)

Does anyone remember this?
Interesting that it happened in New York, rather than in the UK
If only..!

Rosie, the QE2 in 1994 left NY for Hamburg for the Refit with no passengers onboard.A lot of the furniture was taken off the ship in New York.I think this was the main reason.

It would be interesting to have a look at where many of QE2's passengers came from during that time.
Would it have been the United States?
If it was, then the amount interest in the sale there would have been a significant factor.

Alternatively, maybe Cunard needed the sailing time to get her ready, without furniture, for her refit.
I wonder if anyone knows for a fact, why Southampton wasn't the place to sell the goods!

Now - the very idea of a similar sort of sale in Dubai, wouldn't that be a difficult thought.....? :(

A good looking chair!
Looks like it might have been designed by the Robert Heritage - and Race 'team'

Yes. I remember when the furniture went to Salvation Army locations in NYC. I quickly went to all locations that I could. They just had Midships Bar chairs and tables, all in very poor condition for about $200 each. I kick myself for not buying anything, but all were in very bad condition.

The designs of the pillars ('uprights'?!) in the midships lobby, together with those in the Queens Room are reflected in the stool and tables here.

When did they disappear - or, are there still some on board?

a sad but interesting story about the person who donated the Queens chair in the wardroom.
It was donated by Eric Wright who had supplied furniture as a company contractor and was a regular traveler with his wife.

His wife unfortunately had developed Alzheimers, subsequently they were on the 1982 xmas cruise.
They attended the xmas day lunch time cocktail party in the wardroom and everything seemed ok, that after noon aroumd 6 pm  on route to Barbados they both jumped over the side, from Boat deck stbd side aft,( a gate had been found unlatched that evening) they were not found to be missing until the next morning when the stewardess found a note which said that he could not stand the situation with his wife and felt it best if they died together.
Can you imagine what was going through his mind, poor chap.
