And QE2's engines run at 400 rpm, not 428 as stated in the text. :P

The later versions of these donks run at 428 rpm.

Wow - hard to believe no one has added anything here since September 2011!!!!

Anyway, I am preparing to shift house and am having to dump a lot of technical papers, journals, magazines, etc that I no longer have room to keep, nor probably any need to keep, any more.
One journal (that I am going to keep!) I have just found is the MAN B&W 1995 publication for their L58/64 engines (580 mm bore x 640 mm stroke), of which QE2 had nine installed. The poster shows the 6-cylinder version.
I have photographed the large fold-out centrefold to see if it comes out Ok. If it does, I will add more data from this poster tomorrow.

Cheers
Skilly

ps - didn't come out as large as I hoped - the legend numbers are hard to read, but I will still post the remainder tomorrow.

Lovin this stuff!!

I assume that Burmeister & Wain were absorbed into the MAN empire in the 70s?

Thanks Skilly btw!

Thanks, Skilly, please add more !

June   :)

P.S. Do you by any chance have in your materials the Proceedings from The International Maritime and Shipping Conference (IMAS '88) ?

Specifically looking for three papers from that conference -

QE2 from Turbine to Diesel

The Re-engining of the QE2

The Electric Propulsion System of the QE2

Thanks !

J.   :)

Lovely stuff Skilly, are you sure you need to throw stuff away, ditch in haste , repent in leisure, or some such useless ditty..

You will be correct Pete!

As soon as I throw it away, I will then have a need for it.
It looks like my restored 1960 Massey Ferguson tractor is going to Fiji in May (sold to a flat mate from 45 years ago) -I bought this machine as a solid block of rust about 18 years ago - I needed a mower for my 2 acre front lawn.
And two of my sons have gone halves to purchase my 1991 HSV V8 and are going to put it into storage - I have now owned it for 25 years come May. Only 30 of these cars were imported to NZ, about 20 still exist, and my 1-owner model (me) has only done 144,000 km in
that time, so, for a V8, only just run in! It has a lovely rumble, and is capable of 155 mph. Never been dinged, and the interior is mint!
HSV was owned by Tom Walkinshaw, then passed to his son Ryan when Tom died.

Just found a sectioned view of the L58/64 engine.

One of the main reasons this engine was selected for QE2 was that the piston could be disconnected from the connecting rod at the ring of bolts (actually studs & nuts) just below the piston skirt. This meant the engine could be fully maintained despite the low headroom clearance that was available in QE2s engine rooms. The piston would be unbolted at the top palm, then lifted out the top. The connecting rod was then removed out the crankcase door at the bottom.
If the rod was still bolted to the piston, then there was not enough height available to lift the assembly out. The big end was too big to fit out the top anyway.

Ok - I have scanned some of the pages from the MAN B&W brochure - the pages I left out are all advertising, etc.
The technophobes among you will manage to glean some information from these pages - many others will pass it over.

Fantastic stuff, thanks so much for sharing!  I read as much as I could about these engines in 1987 when they were brand new, then finally got to stand right next to one when it was running in 2011.  I have a video somewhere, which I've never uploaded...

Was the 9 cylinder version in use before QE2?

From the desk of the Chief Engineer:

In response to request to visit the engine room, which for security reasons could not be granted this FAQ leaflet was produced and can be seen on Diesel Duck/Marine Engineering history website

In 87 a few lucky people got beyond the door on 5 deck and were allowed a peek, l was more shocked to see the Instruction book, lm not sure we saw the actual engines, but it was amazing all the same
The other photo is a Cunard photo.

Look at the shiny bits! My dad saw this in April 87, he'd disappear for hours to spend time with the engineers to see what they'd done to her.
