Norman and Margaret
« on: Oct 21, 2023, 10:38 AM »
Hi. I am trying to find the surname of a couple we met on a Baltic cruise this summer. I have lost their details. He had been an officer on the QE2 in the 1980s and had been on the ship in the Falklands. His wife Margaret met him on the ship where she was working as part of the medical team. Does any know who I might be talking about?
Much appreciated - Ian McArthur

Ian thanks for posting.

The fact he had sailed on the ship to the Falklands, I would imagine that some of the Falklands crew would remember him.  Can you remember if Margaret, his wife had also sailed to the Falklands?

I can mention your post on the October newsletter, which is due out next week, in the hope that we find the officer's name.

In response to the article in the newsletter asking if anyone could help.  David Humphreys responded with the following information.

Quote
If the request relates to when the ship was requisitioned during the South Atlantic conflict I might be able to help. (Unfortunately I cannot help if this relates to the ship’s visits to Port Stanley; QE2 certainly visited there once, maybe twice.)

I have scanned the crew list for the South Atlantic voyage. Three Norman’s sailed on the voyage:
Norman Broadbent, listed as C.D.R. (to be honest I do not know what C.D.R. represents)
Norman Clarke, assistant steward days.
Norman Smart, Hotel Service Engineer

It is definitely not Norman Clarke as he is a rating and the request relates to an officer. It could possibly be Norman Broadbent depending on what CDR stands for although my best guess is that he too was a rating.

It would appear most likely to be Norman Smart, engineer officer.

I hope that this helps. Many thanks for another splendid edition of the newsletter.
