Title: Life For QE2 if Q3 and Q4 Had Been Built
Post by: kevinh on Jan 18, 2018, 06:14 PM
Can't help but wonder,
If Q3 and Q4 had been built when QE2 was operating, or either one of them were built (let's say the designs merged) and QE2 had a running mate, how would history have gone then? Would Vistafjord/Caronia, Sagafjord, and those other Cunard cruise ships have not been needed? Would QM2 have a running mate today? Would QE2 still be operating?

The possibilities are endless.

Q4 was what QE2 was known as before naming. Q3 would've suffered due to not being a dual purpose ocean liner/cruise ship. Q3 would've been a contemporary of SS France. QE2 came out of the need for a dual purpose ship, a smaller ship (Panamax), a more efficient ship, and in some ways a cheaper to build and run ship compared to the Q3 design. QE2 is the last Cunard Queen to have been referred to as Q and then a number prior to naming.

Vistafjord/Caronia and Sagafjord and other Cunard ships occupied a different niche within Cunard so likely would still have had their place.

QE2 (Q4) was revolutionary and not evolutionary.  She was one of a kind, and it is only due to a number of "monetary miracles" that she actually was built.

She was built in a transitionary period of time !  A toast - "The Queen !"   :)
