Title: November 2017 : Marks of character -- scratches, dents, repairs and patches
Post by: Isabelle Prondzynski on Nov 04, 2017, 12:04 PM
This month's theme is "Marks of character : scratches, dents, repairs and patches", chosen by Hamburger, the winner of the August competition.

This will be interesting... there were so many, but did we take pictures of them?

The prize this month is the book RMS Queen Elizabeth 2" by Janette McCutcheon, donated by me. This is currently selling at GBP 19.99 on Amazon UK.

Alternatively, June Ingram is offering a jigsaw of the prizewinning picture. The choice is yours -- which will it be?

The album is open -  so now is the time to look for your most interesting pictures on this theme. Wishing you happy memories as you search your photo collection to find up to three pictures to upload to the competition album.

This link will take you straight there : Marks of character -- scratches, dents, repairs and patches (https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=171).

If you have not uploaded photos to the Forum Gallery before, have a look at these instructions (https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/index.php/topic,2936.0.html), and if you have any problems, just contact us on admin@theqe2story.com (admin@theqe2story.com ). You could even email the photos to this address, and we can upload them for you.

The deadline for submitting photos is 30 November 2017. Voting will run from 1 December 2017 until 31 December 2017.

We look forward to seeing your photos in this month's competition.

This is the third month of photos for the 2019 calendar. Maybe your photo will figure there!

Enjoy yourselves!  :)

This month's theme will hopefully generate lots of interesting photos.

I wonder how many photos we have of QE2's Marks of character - scratches, dents, repairs and patches.  I imagine photos of the exterior and exterior would be appropriate.

Start looking at your photos and upload to enter your three best photos  :)

Only four photos entered for this month's competition and three of them are my photos.

As we are nearly half way through the month, we would appreciate if you could have a look at your photo albums  for "QE2 Marks of character ...  scratches, dents, repairs and patches".  Not only will you be supporting the competition but it also gives an indication of the dents repairs and patches that could be seen on the ship.

Looking forward to seeing your entries...

I've uploaded mine! It took a bit more searching than usual, but was fun.

Many of our exterior details of QE2 would show up patches and scrapes... once I started looking, I had more then enough pictures to enter. She had a lot of history to show... and like the face of a dear one growing older, I loved those wrinkles too!

I've just entered my 3!

Tip for others - even if you don't think you took such photos, I bet if you look hard you can find some in the background of your other photos!

If you are talking about film photos scan them with a flatbed scanner (cheaply available on Amazon) as however hard you try photographing your photos it will give disappointing results.

Yes - and you'll probably need at least 300dpi, especially if you are scanning from matt prints.

Indeed, the film photos of mine from our August 2003 first trip were scanned automatically at 300dpi on the vertical and horizontal according to the image data. It seems a lot of modern scanners will automatically adjust unless one goes out of their way to do it manually.

That's correct - to use anything other than the default setting of the particular scanner, it will need to be set for each individual scan.

Most these days do default to 300dpi, thankfully, but older ones might be set lower.

The elongated windows are something I’ve never seen! Where are they located?

They are on One Deck, midships according to my Dad's photos.

If I remember well, they are behind the shops on the upper gallery of the Grand Lounge. Once the shops were set up there, some of the previously open windows were blacked out in this way. The photo shows the other window frames, which were filled with glass when the Double Up room operated. I stand to be corrected though...

Ah okay I misunderstood as to which windows/portholes. I was thinking of the elliptical portholes on One Deck  :P

Although looking at me and my parents photos, Two Deck had it's own elongated windows - not dissimilar to Quarter and Upper Deck's windows.
