Title: Poll for the January photo competition "QE2 Queens Room"
Post by: Lynda Bradford on Jan 31, 2017, 08:19 PM
The theme for the January competition "Queens Room" was chosen by Cunarder Man, the winner of the October competition.

Thank you to everyone who submitted pictures, which we really appreciate, and we hope that many of you enjoy choosing your 3 favourite photos.

Voting is easy but you need to be a Forum member and log into the Forum to vote.  Even if you have not submitted photos, please support those who have participated, by choosing your three favourite ones, noting the details, then tick the relevant box on the poll.  But if you have submitted photos please do not vote for the photos you have entered.

To make it easier for you we have posted the pictures below, however you can also view the photos in the Gallery, where you can see them all at once, in thumbnail form, plus you can view larger versions of the pictures by clicking on the photo to see medium size, then click again, to see them in large size.

Go to the Gallery Album QE2 Queen Room (https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/gallery/thumbnails.php?album=157).

The prize this month is the book "QE2 Queen Elizabeth 2, the Authorised Story" by Neil Potter and Jack Frost, donated by Isabelle Prondzynski :

https://www.theqe2story.com/forum/index.php/topic,6741.0.html

Alternatively, June Ingram has offered as a prize the jigsaw version of the winning photo. It will be interesting to see which is preferred!

You will not see the results until after the voting has closed on 1 March  2017, giving all time zones the chance to catch up with the voting deadline.

There is a fantastic range of photos for you to view and vote for this month.  Enjoy!  :)

I'm disappointed that there are no pictures of the room in its original state or and of the refits other than the last :( Although I suppose, like me, there aren't many of us with lots of pictures of original designs :(

I often wonder whether people did not take so many photos in the early years of QE2 or if the photos are in albums in lofts just ready to be rediscovered.

Lynda, I think digital cameras have a lot to do with the quantity of pictures taken and the fairly recent timeframes.
All of the photos I have entered in the competitions (except 1) are all digital and relatively recent.

The hassle of trawling through photo albums to find suitable pictures, taking the album apart to get the picture out, the scanning, touching up and processing of them to get them into a format suitable for uploading means (unfortunately) I don't bother looking through them for the competition.

When I take my camera on a two week cruise these days, 600 - 1000 photos isn't unusual - memory cards are cheap and pressing the shutter release costs nothing. Similar duration voyages back in the 35mm film days meant two 36 exposure rolls of film, maybe 3, so I was careful and conservative what pictures I took.
Also, film cameras weren't so compact in those days, so it was more of a chore taking them to the events around the ship - and those that were compact enough to stick in a (large) pocket often used formats where quality wasn't brilliant.

Even if a do go digging in the albums, I can only go back to 1996, but as you say, there must be some gems hidden away in shoeboxes and in lofts from the earlier days.

Lynda I have spoken to crew who worked onboard in the 70s,80s many did take photos but sadly many photos are faded or not good quality. On my QE2 Crew group on Facebook many of this photos can be seen.

I've always felt the same.  Lots will have been thrown out, as the photographers have passed away and their possessions been disposed of... others will be owned by elderly people.  The ones I'd love to track down are the slides which, if taken by a decent camera at the time, can return fabulous results.  Bob C's are a perfect example :- https://www.flickr.com/photos/33120597@N03/

I never forget on my very first crossing in 1986 l had taken some photos with my kodak film camera and bearing in mind l was going for a bridge visit l decided l would use a 36 exp film.. so new film installed up l went and the first photo l took the camera went haywire and the film was wound back.
Being a young impressionable teenager l sure as heck wasnt going to ask can l go back and get some more film.. And with Captain Portet he put the fear of god up me anyway. But in his day room when he autographed my book a nicer guy you couldnt meet. The photos never taken but the memories remain.

There was a lot to be said for taking time to take a photo back then not knowing if it would turn out untill the film was back from the chemists.
But l do agree the hassle of looking through albums and uploading them takes forever.
These days when your taking a photo its a perfect chance to add "and one more for facebook"  ;)

Every photo of The Queens Room is superb and shows off the special room in so many ways and with so many memories.

I have with great difficulty (as always) made my selection and cast my ballot.

That was how I first saw the Queens Room :) I always preferred that to its later blue and gold scheme but that's a case of liking what we know :)

14 voters so far, and several photos doing well. Looking forward to more votes, and of course also to discussion and appreciation of the pictures.

The photo competition has brought so many wonderful pictures into the Forum, which would otherwise not have been part of a collection. For my own pictures, for instance, it is great to see them taking their place alongside related pictures by other photographers, thus helping us all to have a much more rounded view of QE2.

I do hope the photo competitions will continue -- but that also depends on all Forum members and whether many of us are willing to share photos as well as opinions (i.e. votes).

21 votes so far - one photo clearly in the lead but being rapidly pursued by two photos tied for runner up.

As the photos reach the "home stretch", how many more votes can we get ?   ;D
