Title: Cunard's QE2 50th anniversary voyage aboard Queen Elizabeth
Post by: Derek Boyd on Apr 13, 2016, 10:39 AM
Just received my copy of Cunard brochure August 2016 - May 2018.  I quote from page 39. 'Queen Elizabeth, Q729 - 8 September 2017

'Join Queen Elizabeth to celebrate the 50th Anniversary of Cunard's best-loved ship - the iconic QE2. Launched in 1967, QE2 sailed the world
for just over 39 years, taking 2.5 million passengers over 5.8 million miles - more miles than any other ship'

'Join fellow Cunarders to celebrate the life of a floating legend, culminating with a commemorative dinner on 20 September - the same day
QE2 was launched..... finishing the cruise details with recognising QE2 is .. 'often referred to as the 'most loved ship in the world'

How, dare I ask, are Carnival/Cunard planning to celebrate the 10th Anniversary of 'the dumping of the most loved ship in the world'
in November 2008???

I have a sneaky feeling they will have QM2, QE and QV call-by for a 'photoshoot' of all 4 Queens. Wouldn't that just be lovely???
You may have detected sarcasm, cynicism in the above comment - and you would be correct.

Carnival couldn't wait to get the cheque for QE2. It's over. I wish they would just leave her alone and let whatever happens in Dubai proceed
without all this sentimental mush when it suits them. What a strange organisation. It made me boke when I read it. It's guff.

In addition to Cunard remembering the launch of QE2 remember that the QE2 Story will be hosting a special event in Clydebank to celebrate QE2's 50 years.

Keep up to date with progress by following the topic Rob set up for information :

Yes, as Lynda has said, there are great plans underway to remember the launch of our QE2 right in Clydebank, her birthplace.  The event will be hosted by The QE2 Story.  It is sure to be a fabulous event fitting for our beloved QE2.  Mark the date and watch as new information comes out.   :)

Wonderful plans by the forum to commemorate QE2.

I am very excited to be speaking aboard QE on the special Cunard anniversary cruise, but am sad that I can't attend the forum events as it looks to be excellent.

Details of the Cunard voyage -- http://www.cunardline.com.au/cruise-search/book-a-cruise/cruises/qu/2400-q729-sou1-sou2/

I think it is wonderful that Cunard are commemorating the ship's long and important career.

Derek, you beat me to it.

Sadly, that elusive photoshoot of all 4 Queens will not happen as only Queen Mary 2 will be visiting Dubai en route back to Southampton at the end of her World cruise in 2017 and 2018.  Queen Elizabeth and Queen Victoria do not call at Dubai.

I see from the article in the brochure that a commemorative dinner will be held on board Queen Elizabeth on 20th September (the same date that QE2 was launched).  So sadly, it seems our QE2 will be all alone in Dubai on this her special day whilst others are celebrating elsewhere!!

Anything happening in Southampton and/or Liverpool on 20th September 2017?

Queen Elizabeth is in Liverpool in July 2017 - seems to be becoming an annual event as she was there last Saturday (2nd July) for the celebrations for 100 years of the Cunard building.

Indeed its happened to some of us ???... No emails,No brochures,no World Club news letters, and No Diamond Year Book...Guess Cunard have liberated me. Nice to know my loyality has counted and they appreciated it.... and now a bit like QE2, Iv been dumped, like a fish cast aside and washed upon the shore, exposed to the elements and left to rot :'(

Some might say its the very least they can do.

I do wonder however just what significance the ports of call have (if any) other than Gib
What is surprising is, when you manage to navigate the schedule, that when l did a 3 week med cruise (only 3 nights longer than this one) on QE2 we sailed all the way into Alexandria and generally went so much further (and faster ;))

While there is a cruise on Queen Elizabeth next year to celebrate the 50th anniversary of QE2's launch it will not be on the same scale of the 40th Anniversary voyage in 2007.

i do wonder given perhaps the "uncertainty" of QE2 in Dubai, if perhaps Cunard are shall we say less than eager to associate events with her. Perhaps had she been refitted as a hotel as planned and opened for business would we have seen more events involving QE2...?

How anyone from this site can accuse anyone else of "sentimental mush " is beyond me.
I have booked this morning (23 Dec 2016) and already there are no grill suites available.
The ship lives on in our memories and what lies in Dubai is just so much scrap iron and will never sail the seas again except in our minds, so get over it and enjoy life.

I'm afraid, with the ship on its normal itinerary, it seems half-hearted.  They should have had her on the Clyde that day.

Yes, there will be disappointment.

Cunard, like most cruise companies these days, seem to forget that loyal followers exist, and those loyal followers should have their worth and the ship's worth acknowledged in a more fitting way.

We must remember that Cunard is not Cunard of old - a British shipping company with a long and important history, but is simply a brand of a US based cruise firm. The old Cunard did not survive and Carnival took over the brand as one of their lines. Carnival's job is to make money - they're doing that by exploiting the names of Cunard and QE2 - can we blame them?

It's a great pity that air travel took over from sailing to get to anywhere outside the UK. It's much more fun to spend a couple of weeks relaxing whilst getting to your destination, eating and drinking far too much  :P,  but flying is so much quicker. Who can afford the extra time (I'm not even thinking about the cost) sailing takes over flying?

Thats the trouble, They do...BUT its only when they wish to do so and on their terms. Rather like a dotty old relative at a party, you wheel them out, hope they dont steal the show and wheel them back in again pretty quickly

The last thing Carnival need is to be reminded that a 50 year old ship , which they gave away under a closed deal, now lays in bits in Dubai, under the pretense thats its being transformed into a seventh wonder of the world. And lets not kid ourselves here we really have no evidence of exactly what they are doing to her. No desrespect to Davina for his hard work . We have been here before with false starts and right now is there any reason to think otherwise.

The 40th Anniversary was l gather amazing, The Farewell UK was stupendous (well l thought so) and the celebratory cruise on whatever ship it is they are using looks nothing more than a pig in a poke.

Given that its 10 years since the 40th Anniversary cruise , surely by now people will wake up, smell the coffee and realise they are in for a big let down.  Mindyou, given todays new cruisers they might think its the best thing since sliced bread...and who knows some may even ask..What is a QE2 :o

Given the low rates for some of the crossings, Id be cheaper taking a crossing home than paying what l pay in excess baggage.  But deep down l know that would never happen.

Most of the time it's a botched response. Ten years has sure gone by too fast. Especially thinking about it in he moment. Our Queen is languishing in the hot sun..baking. Myles, you are right. Everyone is in for a awful and dense "remembering". The fact that they call "qe3" QE2 is daft. You would think that people would know.

An alternative way to look at this voyage is what a great experience it's going to be. 17 glorious nights in the Mediterranean- an area QE2 sailed many times in her own career - with a fantastic schedule of events to honour the greatest ship to ever sail.

Events include my talks (reason alone to be excited ... right?   ;D :D ;)  ) which coincide with QE2 theme days that link the ship's great career to the activities aboard.

There will be panel discussions from Captain McNaught, presentations from Commodore Warwick, talks from Maureen Ryan, themed menus, live QE2 menu  / cooking recreations, QE2 themed quizzes in the Golden Lion, QE2 commemorate menus, our book is being launched aboard... and some special extras that will be revealed when aboard the ship.

I was recently in the UK aboard QM2 filming a QE2 history piece with the BBC alongside Ian McNaught and the Spiers family (40+ cruises on QE2). QE2 is going to get a wonderful historical tribute on national television as a result - perhaps a reminder to many people that she still exists.

Cunard is a business... all businesses exist to make money. Cunard made money from QE2... But having been involved in this voyage for some time I can say that the number of things are being done and the thought being put into it is above and beyond just making a buck, it's also ensuring those aboard have a memorable time and I really do think that people coming on this trip will enjoy the experience.

If anyone is looking for a replica of 2007 they probably will be disappointed as this won't be the same - QE2 is gone and the voyage is on a different ship... But it will be a new and exciting experience ten years later and hopefully those who join us will very much enjoy it.

That's my 2c for what it's worth.

The 17 night Mediterranean cruise is a wonderful itinerary, which people will enjoy.  One of my favourite itineraries! Cunard have tagged on the QE2 anniversary onto the cruise as a marketing ploy, I have no problem with that, but it is not primarily about QE2.

The real celebration of QE2's 50th anniversary is happening in Clydebank.   :)

I'm sure it will be a wonderful experience, for those wealthy enough to experience it... !

But the anniversary is of her *launch*, in Clydebank where it is wrapped up tightly in the story of British, Scottish and Clyde shipbuilding.    Lots and lots of people were involved in her creation, who never once were lucky enough to travel on her...

Queen Elizabeth was on the Clyde earlier this year...

lol no  ;D  But having been somewhat involved in this voyage given my job aboard as a guest speaker, the planning side of it has been a lot of fun. The activities arranged are going to be a fitting tribute to this great ship. They've arranged some great QE2 tributes and allowed us to launch our book aboard which is very exciting and also facilitated us doing the BBC doco to share the QE2 story - so I am comfortable to give credit where credit is due.  :D

I wonder if anyone planning the activities was there at the time. There are ten of us taking the cruise, 5 couples, 3 of us sailed on the maiden voyage as waiters and bartenders, and a 4th was our anchorman in N.Y. He was a Cunarder and now owned a tavern in the city that we all would frequent for the next 30 years.

I was 3 month 'working by' in Clydebank before eventually sailing  from Greenock, ending up in Southampton in early Jan 69 for another 4 months 'working by'. Between us we have many memories of 'the old days' and are looking forward to a successful cruise, after remaining close friends for 50 years you can assume we will enjoy ourselves.

I believe it was a 17 night cruise departing from Southampton on September 8th so she was due back on Sunday 24th

Apparently they had 5 theme nights with appropriate menus ... these were:-
SUNDAY 10th          TRIUMPH OF A GREAT TRADITION
WEDNESDAY 13th.   THE FALKLANDS
TUESDAY 19th.        MOVING IN ROYAL CIRCLES
WEDNESDAY 20th.   I NAME THIS SHIP

Given Cunard and their recent news about a new thing being built, We can only imagine that there was a bit more fuss made onboard this time, Perhaps an ever bigger fuss made than what would have been normal . But then thats the trouble they only make a fuss over QE2 when it suits them.
I do wonder why they didnt announce the new build thing onboard to the assembled masses.
Perhaps the passengers are somewhat stunned to have been dragged round the Med and paid an hefty price for such a thing to be fed a couple of lectures and given a couple of fancy menus.
Either that or exhausted with the onboard celebrations.. ::)

The cruise ran smoothly and was fully booked. I have mailed a copy of QE2 events and speeches that were made and sent a hard copy to Lynda, maybe she can post it here.

I guess there were 20 or so past crew members of QE2 onboard and of course many past passengers of QE2.

The lectures, mostly in The Royal Court Theatre,  were full and well received. QE2 Story badges which I had taken onboard with me were given to Captain Hashmi and Commodore Warwick and I observed Chris Frame sporting one also. The QE2 Story was mentioned in several of the speeches at the get-togethers.

The lecturers were Capt. Hashmi, (who served on QE2 for many years), Commodore Warwick, Maureen Ryan and Chris Frame. Capt. McNaught also spoke at some of the events.

I have finally got around to taking a photo of the programme of for the QE2 anniversary celebration on QE2 in September.  Whoever was responsible for producing this document for the passengers got the month wrong for a few of the entries, but the items are all from the same cruise in September (not July).  I have also keyed the information into a document as it may be a bit easier to read the events.

Thanks again to Kevin McGhee for letting us see this document with the programme of the events on the Queen Elizabeth cruise in September (see attachment and post from Bob with a pdf version)

Thanks again to Kevin McGhee for letting us see this document with the programme of the events on the Queen Elizabeth cruise in September (see attachment)

Thanks for sharing the QE2 50th Cruise Programme! I wonder how well we would have done on the QE2 Trivia Quiz! :)

Actually, I wonder whether we could get a copy of it! It would be fun to try it out here in the Forum :) .

Isabelle, Hello!
That Is a good idea.
Just wondering now, who set the quiz....

AND...
Maybe getting a Great Big QE2 Quiz prepared for her TEN Years In Dubai could also be a possibility here?
We could invite questions (and Prizes) - and, like "raffle tickets" add them to a Poll, and Publish next year.
100 questions relating, under headings, to all the different areas of QE2 Pre - 2009.
Something for everyone, from Engines, to Navigation to Hotel, to F and B, to Housekeeping, to Security, to Crew Info to Communications to Retail, to Entertainment etc etc !

Wonder what you all think?
If people agree, it probably needs a New Topic too!
Rosie

These were the questions in the QE2 Quiz on QE2 Day on QM2 on 2 July 2015 - the 50th Anniversary of the keel laying (during Cunard's 175th annversary crossing). The highest score was 18!

2.   Before given her formal name, what number accompanied ‘Q’ as the ship’s codename?

3.   Name one of the three warships sunk in the Falklands whose survivors were brought home on QE2 after the Falklands Campaign in 1982?

4.   In what year did QE2 undertake her first World Cruise?

5.   From what French cruise ship did QE2 rescue 500 passengers after the cruise ship caught fire in 1971?

9.   What was unusual with how Queen Elizabeth 2's name was spelt?

10.   QE2 sailed 5.8 million miles, which is more than any other. What Cunard ship did this total eclipse.

11.   What were the names of the two Grand Suites on board?

12.   Apart from the UK and Germany which other European country hosted QE2 in dry dock?

13.   Where and why did a million people turn out to greet QE2 on 24 July 1990?

Thanks Michael.

Will you post the answers after a suitable pause?

We should try to answer them from memory rather than google etc as I assume the quiz was done live in the Golden Lion?

You think you know quite a bit . . . until . . .

Yes it was in the Golden Lion one night after dinner. Quite competitive. Me and my group not allowed to take part since I'd written the questions. As I say, the highest score was 18.

Twynkle,

I have had a go - of course I got 20 out of 20 in my imagination- but I won't know how badly I did until Michael reveals the answers.

Let's just say if I don't get question 1 correct, I will leave by the window without opening it!

Which window, Pete?
btw - I'm already to bolt from the Bit Between the Bridge, down the steps, along under the no-show lifeboats  - and (hating too far to jump) to the very stern on the lowest deck - just above the mooring deck...
The only question I really didn't even try was the only one I knew - hence early preparation for a speedy demise...
Then someone can write the book called Death in Dubai....
PS - haven't had such fun here since we planned, organised, developed and nearly implemented QE2's World Cruise 2009.

Michael - please, have you set a true dead-line date?
Advance notice could be helpful....

Just a thought... why not e-mail entries by a given date to the admin e-address...?

... and the Terms and Conditions?
Please can these be as they were on 2nd July in the Golden Lion?
'Search-ing' elsewhere probably wasn't an option then!

I would take issue with the 'narrator ' when at 2.36, when while looking at the board with past masters on he says; "Cunard Masters"! Captain Christopher Rynd was NOT a Cunard Officer, he was 'dumped' on Cunard following the 'ethnic cleansing' of TRUE Cunard Captains in 2005.
Also strange as it may seem, he doesn't mention Captain Peter Russell, funny that!!!!!

Explain the "Ethnic Cleansing", please.

Basically the DELIBERATE removal of a group or 'race' to effect a 'pure location.

IE; the moving on of TRUE Cunard Officers from QE2 to P&O and/or Princess to make way for Officers from said lines to 'take over' Cunard/QE2.

It just speeded up the downward spiral of Cunard standards, 90% were total idiots with no idea of Cunard history or traditions, let alone knowledge of the regular and loyal passengers.
