Hello jmdlyn

Re. your post about sighting QE2 in Gibraltar!  Please - would it be possible for you to let us know if you have seen an AIS (or any other) reference for QE2 in Gibraltar?  Currently the AIS (Port of Gibraltar) is showing a passenger ship that's bunkering alongside - her name's Princess Danae

Many thanks

Rosie,

Thats not what he meant!  QE2 is, of course, still at Port Rashid.

Here's the image he's referring to :- http://maps.google.com/maps?f=q&source=s_q&hl=en&geocode=&q=gibraltar&sll=37.0625,-95.677068&sspn=31.013085,55.019531&ie=UTF8&ll=36.146885,-5.365341&spn=0.003855,0.006716&t=h&z=17

As you know these satellite images can be years out of date.  At some point, they will no longer show QE2 at various locations around the world, but at the moment they do, in various ports!

You can get rather a splendid view down her funnel exhausts :)

- Rob.

Title: QE2 in Gibraltar on Google Earth
Post by: Matt on Jan 07, 2010, 07:27 PM
Hello my fellow QE2 fans!

Again, I have been doing a little circumnavigating of the globe, but via Google Earth instead of on the Cunard Queen's 2010 World Cruises. I have just 'Cruised' in to the Port of Gibraltar and noticed the QE2 tied up alongside! I am not sure if this has been found before and posted - if it has I apologise, but I’m sure the image is relatively new as I haven’t scoped it out before! It could possibly be an image from her final visit there? If it isn’t, it would surely be one of the last visits, providing i have just overlooked her position there in the past!

It is a relatively clear image, with the CUNARD titles on the starboard side clearly visible and her call sign GBTT also clearly visible above the bridge, along with all the ships other magnificent features that can be seen from above!

Seeing her sitting in the sun of Gibraltar brought a smile to my face, and thought everyone else would feel the same!

This brings the Google Earth/Maps tally of QE2 up to three to date - the Sydney image, Dubai 'Al Mina' image and now the Gibraltar image. I’ll try to scope out more as I continue my virtual voyage! (Maybe I am a little too hopeful now!)

Regards,
Matt

Please Note: These Images are all from Google.

QE2 in Newcastle on Google Street View!!!

You should compare this with QM1 on Street View :-

SUPERB find Rob - well done my friend!

Yes!
And btw - how (on earth!) did you find her?
I tried to see if it was possible to look down - by then she'd sailed away!

It's also possible to see from this map, why -  (on the overnight voyage on Saga Ruby (2009) - turning round, further up river was extremely tight! Lots of tugs, - cranes, big tanks and fragile structures at the river's edge!
https://www.flickr.com/photos/watch_keeper/4453240323/in/set-72157619857102149/

This must have been a fairly tricky manoeuver for QE2 too!

To those of you not familiar with Streetview, are you aware you can 'virtually' walk right down the side of the ship past the stern, and look around, and zoom in and out of the image?

I found it mentioned here - http://www.tedcarter.co.uk/blog/2010/03/20/fun-with-google-street-view/ - via a Google alert.

She looks very good, and at home there... but I presume its not a suitable permanent home for her?

Hey Rob,

Haven't other large ships been laid up there? Think so!
Maybe it's worth a few enquiries - (Harbour master and Port Authority!)
Is the Port owned / managed by DP World - Might be!
They've got several (old and new) dry docks there.
Who is the MP?
And Mr Aiden Birkett of Deloittes (Advisor for financial restructuring in Dubai) supports Newcastle!!

It would be great for the North East - and Scots - all needing some sound investment!
In 2007 on Tyneside, they waved the flags specially for her.

Post by: highlander0108 on Jun 26, 2010, 03:47 PM
While the lucky ones are off on the Waverly, we have been watching the the World Cup, especially now since USA is alive!  This morning, I spotted QE2! ;D  Well, it was in a graphic ESPN is using of a map of South Africa showing Port Elizabeth.  Low and behold they have a familiar looking ship with a red and black funnel shown off the coast.  This was totally unnecessary on ESPN's part, but cool nevertheless.  I spotted her immediately!  This is a bittersweet reminder of what could have been.   :'(

Title: QE2 in Sydney Harbour
Post by: maggie maggot on Jun 27, 2010, 10:13 PM
You may have already seen it but if you go onto Googlle Maps and look at Sydney Harbour there is a rather beatuful ship along side the cruise terminal. I noticed it when planning my trip a couple of months ago.
I was really eiry to look at it.
Were I stayed in Sydney, close to China town, there were some excelent buskers just across the road. I stopped and watched this trio of very strangley dressed musicians and of all the tunes they were playing it was the Cold Play tune that the BBC used for the QE2 leaving Southampton for the last time. 'I used to rule the world-------'
I caught some strange glances as tears came into my eyes.
Of all the songs in all the world!

Someone at work showed me the Flight Simulator mode in Google Earth (desktop version).

If you turn on the 3D model layers you can overfly Dubai's skyscrapers and the QE2.

So ill in bed the other day I did a flew flypasts of the QE2 in Dubai.

Screenshots attached :o)

You can turn of the HUD if you want.

Post by: usqe2fan on Apr 16, 2011, 03:47 PM
I was on Google Earth yesterday, and QE2 no longer shows up at the Dubai shipyard.  The current image of Port Rashid is from later in 2009, after the drydocking, and QE2 is now at the main port, although not yet pushed forward in the corner.  She looks magnificant in this view, obviously fresh from the Summer 2009 drydocking.

You stole my thunder there as I was about to post that info!  ;D

Also noticed that she is no longer showing in Sydney. I've still to check Gibralter and Malaga. I guess eventually as Google Earth gets updates she will only show up in Dubai  :-[

Just noticed today that QE2 is moored at Port Rashid (rather than in the Dubai dry docks) on Google Maps now.

Obviously the satellite images were taken some months ago before her move to the inner Harbour.

Thought you'd like to know.
