Anyone know where this stool may have been originally located?

Someone has got hold of an old and rather battered "SOME FADING TO VENEER @ BASE" table from QE2. In actual fact they've got two tables. The bidding is at £125.95 for one at the moment and the auction only started fourteen hours ago. Am I alone in thinking that table is way overpriced? ???

THESE MODERN STYLED TABLES WERE INSTALLED ON QE2 DURING THE 1980'S IN THE QUEEN"S AND PRINCESS GRADE CABINS.

I love advertisers who think that by using upper case, somehow it makes what they're saying more powerful... "Ooh, upper case writing!! It must important! I think I'll bid on it now!"

Correct me if I'm wrong, but these look to me like original tables, as fitted to every cabin on board and various other locations.

A couple of years ago there was a seller from Hampshire on ebay selling a few boxed ones stamped QE2 for only at £40-60. shipping was another £30 uk

In cabin 3006 onboard l was tempted to think about unscrewing my table but it was pretty heavy, Had l found a table in my cabin on the last voyages, l might have given more serious thought.

As it was there wasnt one, so all temptation was removed

Shall I put my hands up here and admit to owning one of these babies? :-[
I bought it early last year - was about £80 - I think I may have got it from the seller Myles is on about looking at the postage costs and thinking of some of his other items.

It was delivered to the school where I work in such a huge box that it took 3 of us to get it into my car which was all well and good until I drove back home and realised there was no way I could get it out of the boot on my own....

Ali - your table could be the first ever QE2 Picnic table!

And...does anyone know whether any unsuspecting person has bid for a  QE ll mug (c 1952),
thinking good thoughts about the QE2
and then has discovered that it commemorated the Coronation....?

77 pounds for the winning bid for a deck plug!  :o  Now I feel the idiot for not picking up several.  I actually watched and photographed deck workers repairing missing plugs on our Round Britain trip and they had piles of damaged and popped ones that I am positive were just going to be thrown out.  These plugs were popping due to all the years of sanding of the decks had left little wood left covering the stainless steel bolts holding the planks down.  I have a detailed pic I will locate and post of this.  I hope the winning bidder realizes just how small a piece of teak they just bought.

Regarding the otehr eBay find, the round table; our 5 deck cabin had one of those tables in it and I can attest it was heavy to drag around.

I've got a lot of bits from the World Cruise and other trips that I don't want. Some things (like the WC gifts) I hoped to sell; but others (like the numerous "Crossing the Line" certificates I've got I thought wouldn't sell. I mentioned this to Myles and he came back with some starting prices that I thought were way too high  :o

Your most very welcome, as for high prices, QUALITY will always sell and we dont want to cheapen the QE2 brand do we!!
However l was surprised to see a batch of QE2 Farewell Dubai plates on ebay and the seller had 67   66 for sale
l asked him why he had so much, and the reason he gave was he is a whole saler and as such often gets whole sale lots for sale. Are we to believe 67 passegers gave up their plates at one time or Did Cunard decided they were surplus and gave them away ::) Interestingly a local charity shop recently had 4 Farewell crossing plates for sale in one go at £2.00 EACH.

Not that l would wish to blow my own trumpet or even if we are allowed to self promote but here is a very good book,QE2 the Voyage of Discovery (im happy to enclose a free gift to anyone on here who may decide to bid and win)

And yes l know we didnt call into Dublin, l was over come with emotion and for a moment didnt know where l was going, but nobody picked me up on it :-[

Can you still change it, Myles? Particularly since QE2 has always had such a great welcome in Dublin and Dún Laoghaire... can you try, please? For those of us who are at home thereabouts... please...      :-*

And then, please tell us some more about that amazing looking book -- it may be worth your while if you want the price to keep on rising  ;D

RMS QUEEN ELIZABETH 2
NAVIGATIONAL CHART FROM HER FINAL VOYAGE QE821
SOUTHAMPTON- DUBAI 2008

QE2 is the most famous ship in existence. Recognised around the world she sailed over 5.5 million miles.
Available to purchase is a one of a kind original navigational chart that was used by the Navigation Officer on her final voyage in 2008 covering the Mediterranean.
The route from Gibraltar to Egypt is marked and signed by 8 Officers from the QE2 bridge, including Captain Ian McNaught.
It details the final ports of call for voyage number  QE821 Southampton – Dubai, 11th November – 27th November 2008 Final Voyage.
Only 6 charts exist for the final voyage and they were auctioned off on QE821 to international maritime collectors. Each chart marked there own navigational route to Dubai.  Each chart is a piece of maritime history and all are one of a kind.
The only reason I have this chart in my possession, is because I was the Art Auctioneer of the QE2 from 2007-2008 and it was given to me by the Bridge....

I am surprised nobody bid on the navigational chart. I am even more surprised that someone would part with it. I have a navigational chart from QE2's 2nd to last voyage (Mediterranean) just before voyage to Dubai. They were auctioned off for charity during last day at sea. I could not think of parting with it.

A nice item to own but not keen on the price :o

I used to have some steam valve identity discs (numbered 736 of course) which I polished up and glued to a cork base. These made fabulous  drinks coasters but I think I chucked them out :'(
I shall have to check in my parents loft to see if they're there.

I'd have strong doubts it is from the QE2. The date appears to be wrong (built into the serial number) and the reference to "736" looks like the standard to which the motor was built (normally where the British Standard Number would go were this not for nautical use), and surely not where the ship's build number would appear. Also, what is the supposed use to which this motor was put?

At that price I would insist on proof that is real and not a made up fake.He say the came from her induction motors . John Brown would have most likely brought motors in from a suppler and they would not be unique to QE2. After the 1987 refit she had two unique 50MW drive motors. Ancillary motors for pumps lifts etc would not be made especially for QE2 they most likely came off the shelf from a supplier . Prior to 1987 I am not sure what system would require a 3Kv start voltage on 3 phase rated at 5351 HP?  may a fuel pump for her bunker fuel?
Were the BS on the plate is is were the standard to which the motor was made to . Also on the BS the 763 looks in a diffrent stamp from the rest. I am not say this is a fake but with the amount of fakes on ebay one has to be careful to make sure he is buying the real thing. To me this has a few question marks

I would if I was intending on buying it.
A motor plate form the 1960s  on a peace of varnished wood .I would not pay more than £10 to £20 for if it was real. Most of the stuff on ebay according to the sellers is rare and yet you see the same stuff week in week out. I have seen stuff sell on ebay for how much , look at the price the last bag of pic and mix from Woolworth went for. There are stores on the net to ? weather it was the last bag or not. You pay your money and take your choice. I went to China for work and the Fakes there were mine blowing in there quality from the perfect to the your having a laugh mate.

Its a two speed motor and is most probably from one of the boiler forced draft fans, there was one for each boiler and they would have one spare.

Yes of course, I've been trying to think of what that particular motor would have been used for (if indeed it is genuine). Thanks bulkhead stop.
On the subject of QE2 items that were ripped out during the big refit, I can remember one of the asst mechanics asking if he could take a large boiler room steam valve home. The answer was that if he could get it out and remove it from the ship he could keep it.
I'd love to know if he ever managed to do this.
If there is one item I'd have loved to own it would be one of the turbine blade sculptures that were for sale. I've seen one or two for sale on the www but at ridiculous prices.

Ok hands up, l won the bed throw, but how or when l will ever use it is another matter, But it will be nice to go bed and be wrapped up in QE2.

If anybody has noticed the recent spate of QE2 badges, tie pins, postcards by the seller  Member ID a6789pottey   , these are excellent value, But it would be wise not to get into a bidding war, as quite probably the seller will make a second chance offer. If you recall how much these were sold for onboard, you will see what  a bargain these are.
Going by his emails, l suspect he has  a lot to shift !!!

Yes I was looking at them in Boots just an hour or so before I saw this posting here - very creative of them - however how many people want Baubles of ships?!  I know I don't... would be more suitable as a clever marketing freebie from Cunard .

The holdalls are really quite nice, My first crossing on QE2 l became friendly with a couple, Donald and May from the Columbia Rest. They were sailing over having 3 nights at the Waldorf and flying back on the Concorde. You can imagine my surprise when a box arrived one day and they had sent me a gift of the holdall.
Its only ever been used once and that was for a QE2 ship visit, years ago.
We encountered a force 10 gale mid atlantic and they both were feeling slightly unwell and were going back to the cabin for lay down. I mentioned that for all the money this trip was costing wasnt that a waste of time, so instead off we went and hunted down the ships daily tote, placed a bet and went shopping, the sea sickness they were suffering somehow vanished.
The friendship is still there 25 years later.

Queen Elizabeth 2 QE2 Cunard "The authorized story"
by Potter and Frost

There's a copy of this currently advertised on ebay uk at the moment!
It's an excellent (rare) book about the early years of QE2's life.

Amazon usually has one or two copies available as well if anyone is looking. It's a very good book that gives insight into QE2's conceptualization, construction and the Cunard steamship company. Highly recommended for any QE2 fan.

Interesting... who were  Burness Corlett and Partners and what's all this about hull cracking!?

Burness Corlett were the ships Naval Architects for the last few years of the ships life. All of the General Arrangement plans from at least the last 20 years were drawn by them. Crack monitoring was done by a very pleasant Geordie chap who visited pretty much every Soton, and he monitored all the cracks to ensure they hadn't grown too much, and thye were recorded on plans like these.

Incidentally crack monitoring is now done on the QV by a Deck Officer, rather than an outside 'specialist', until it warrants the visit of a 'guru' - must be cut backs I suppose!

Best line I ever heard was a pax saying to The Staff Captain 'I want to take you and show you a crack by lifeboat 13' as if it was a huge issue. 'You've obviously missed the other 300 then!' was his reply...

Title: Re: QE2 Items on Ebay

Difficult to say; most of the time I'd expect an item to be used on the ship depicted on it, but on the other hand QE2 was Cunard's icon and therefore likely to have been used more generally at times.  My gut feeling, however, says it will be from QE2 because it is an older image one which means it pre-dates the era of hyperactive marketing, meaning it's more likely than not to have been at least intended for QE2 use only.

I note the outline is the original one, meaning it dates from the time before Cunard's fleet was depleted, which complicates things a bit - had it been the rebuilt outline then it would be more certain it was definitely on QE2.

Another point: The seller has labelled it QE11 not QE2, so it's less likely to be found by general QE2 searches, so it shouldn't get bid up too high...

These rings have cropped up before on ebay and do tend to sell quite well. As Peter says because of the incorrect spelling it does narrow the search down quite a lot. In saying that search QE2 and up comes hundreds of stamps >:( >:(

At times l question if some ebay sellers really know what they are doing. If the seller added postage at £10 they would still make a profit and not only that but it would vastly increase the attractable value of it. This buyer collects stuff is a nightmare both for buyer and seller

And this particular case has some important information missed out completely, which in effect voids the listing

These car badges do crop up now and again, i'v managed to over the years buy four of them for various prices and resold them to make a profit. Im keeping one of them, Cant think anyone would dare display it on a car in case it was stolen.
But one of them is sitting in a very prominent QE2 crew members house.
They should generally come in a small box with the fixing attachments which pushes the price up . Generally they will sell for between £60 - £100

These sellers on ebay must have  a heart attack when an item is mentioned on here, Not only in the number of page hits shooting up But also in the number of people watching an item.
But then any ebayer will tell you, you can have as many people watching your item, but there is no sure way of knowing if it will sell. :)

"Missing" item on ebay

http://cgi.ebay.com/Cunard-QE2-board-service-clock-not-souvenir-/140581908622?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item20bb55b08e#ht_500wt_1156

The clock from "D" stairway.  I was onboard when it went "missing", I think it was QE2's final winter crossing in January 2008.
It caused quite a buzz throughout the ship.  Word spread quickly, regular passengers and crew were all expressing a deep sorrow that the ship was already being pilfered.  The crew confirmed that the clock was not removed for maintenance reasons or for any other legitimate reason.

And now here it is, on Ebay.

To reply to Stowaway 2K---if this person is the same one who "pilfered" the clock from the QE2--what chance is there that he could be in real trouble now that he is trying to sell it?

I can't comment on whether or not he is...  but as the clock is the property of Cunard, it is they who would have to take action.
The worst that would happen, I think, is that Ebay would pull the auction.

One of our table hosts on the farewell crossings admitted he had a damaged clock .
In fact there is a subject on QE2 clocks....

Quote
On the Final Atlantic  crossing during dinner it came up in conversation about the ships clocks. Our host that night admitted he actually had  a broken one in his ownership . All my charm and wit was wasted trying to find out how one might be obtained legally.

Sadly it way annoying to see some of clocks had markings to indicate attempts to remove them had failed, the host did mention that all the spares had been used up and they are actually wired in which makes removing then dangerous. Not to mention in recent months the clocks had been firmly screwed onto the walls.

Personally l found the idea to remove actual fittings from QE2 was dispicable. Its one thing to take a side plate, but to remove the fixings is to remove part of her soul.

To return to the QE2 clock that is for sale on E-Bay--if you scroll through the pictures on the auction page you will see that the clock has indeed had its works replaced by a modern mechanism complete with battery. I wonder if E-Bay will pull this item from their auction--i suppose only "Time will Tell".!!! :-[

It'll only be pulled if somebody reports it to them as stolen goods; e-Bay do not search their listings for such things - they rely on people alerting them.  Even then it doesn't always happen quickly, or even at all.

In this instance if Cunard themselves were to report it directly to e-Bay you can bet action would be taken very quickly.

Peter
Just because you report some things to ebay, they dont always remove them. In my time iv reported a number of items that quite clearly break their policy and nothing is done.

A few years ago someone had the bear faced cheek to copy one of my listings word for word, and l reported the matter several times and nothing was done, so l did what anybody would do, got two friends to bid against me, the bids went through the roof and l won the item. Never paid for it,a second chance offer was made to the next higher bidder and they never paid for it.
The seller did agree not to pursue it further and did relist it with his own wording, l did then buy it back for a very poor price and in time resold it with a big profit...
If you know some of the tricks, there are ways round some of the policy.
All is fair in love and war, except, when it comes to ebay.. ;)

The menu cover is only worth what some is prepared to pay, but they do come up more often than you might think, and go for all sorts of prices. However no photo shows the quality of these things, When you open one, can you begin to imagine who was there before you....Im surprised they lasted as long as they did onboard, either that or they had rather a lot in reserve.

The last set of menu folders they used were becoming a bit well used, you could open the menu and it wouldnt stay stiff, if you pardon my language.

Well --the person who sold the clock from the QE2 did alright for himself. Seems a heck of a lot of money for the clock, there again i suppose something is only worth what others are willing to pay for it. Personally--i would have prefered it to have been left on the QE2--it was after all part of the liner.

Those were made for the ships staff by a gentleman from Boston called Andy Tabas. He made them for all sorts of occasions. I have one for Falklands, 180 club (darts) and one for a world cruise.
Title: Re: QE2 Items on Ebay

That'd be "Big Andy" the sports store owner and darts fanatic from Philly. If you go to the virtual chart room archive and look at
"Forum logo - help wanted"  post 19 shows the patch he had made up for the first visit of QE2 to his city. I'm pretty sure he set
the visit up himself.

Interestingly, it was on the run back to Blighty from Philly that it was announced that the ship was to be "taken up from trade" and sent south as a troopship.

The design for the patches came fom the 1980 world cruise logo used by Cunard.

I've got a QE2 ashtray in a box somewhere.  It is from our stateroom and we did not smoke.  We aren't the souvenir theiving type but I had found a diamond between the wood dance floor and the carpet in the Double Room and we had to check to see if it was real - enter the glass ash tray.  We scratched it with diamond and it left a deep gouge so we kept it as a memory piece.

As for the diamond, doing the responsible thing at age 11 we turned it in to the purser.  Unfortunately I don't know if it ever found its way back to its owner.

But ash trays were part of the decor all over the ship back in the day.

Well there are a number of ways to look at, Hes only charging £4 postage, But if it sells at the price of £49.99 he really needs to send it insured which will cost between £7 -£9 for the uk in case. Sadly there are some buyers out there who might claim the item hasnt been received and unless you have a "trackable" method of posting then in the end ebay will side against the buyer and do what's known as a charge back and claim the money back from the seller who in the end will lose out by this. Sadly this level of abuse is increasing and more people are sending items recorded dely.

He hasnt given any idea of the size of the bag, remember l did say previously its not as big as you imagine it to be.
Personally l think hes aware of the number of people watching this item (im one of them and have no intention of bidding) and will probably be expecting it to sell right away for  a hefty price.

However with a bit of wisdom all he has to do is list it with a very low starting price, say £9.99 pop in a reserve of £50 which is the minimum allowed and see what happens. When the auction ends and should the reserve not be met, he then has the option to make a second chance offer to the higher bidder.

I would be glad to pay about £20 or so for the bag, but not much more. Its not a bag you would use, it might be nice on display, and if you took it onboard the new Cunard ships there no knowing what reaction you might get.....
Is it worth the money.as with all ebay stuff have a price in mind and dont get involved in a bidding war

To reply to Cunardqueen----i absolutly agree with everything you say. I am also watching the auction and again have no intention of bidding. Like yourself, i would put a price of between £20--00p and £25--00p for it but i will be intersted to see what he does sell it for---(if he manages this time)

Yes but as a Transatlantic passenger as opposed to a First Class passenger l really shouldnt have been there.
However my initial reaction was that they had a bit of a recline in them so when you were sitting you were laying back further than perhaps you would wish for, then again sitting on them and perhaps leaning forwards wasnt perhaps the best either, But to look at they are so wonderful.

It is expensive, BUT imagine one in a nice g&t, then again would you ever use them..
It has been listed and re listed a few times, perhaps that should tell the seller to reduce the price, then again lm sure with all the people on here "watching" and the page views  perhaps the seller is expecting full price..

Well done on winning the Funnel !! It would appear to be a very rare item. I assume the case cannot be opened? and where do you display it at?
The dish thing, l bought one years ago and the seller classed it as an ashtry, l would have said its a bit too decorative for an ashtray, and perhaps its best suited as a pin dish.
Anyone else have any thoughts? What do you use yours for? the E2 logo might perhaps make it appear older than it actually is?

Good Evening Myles, The Pewter model of the QE2 funnel was actually given to me by my son as a gift. I knew nothing about it until he presented it to me. The perspex cover DOES come off and the funnel itself has a piece of velvet on it's base. I have been buying from E-Bay for years now and i have never seen this item before. The QE2 "Dish" was actually given to him in the box that the funnel came in as an "Extra" from the seller. Again, i have never seen this kind of dish before and that is why i asked if any member of the Forum could identify what it may have been used for. Maybe a crew member saw it being used and could tell me what it held.?

Hmmm... I have one, bought it as an ashtray and always assumed that it was.   ;)  Of course I wouldn't dare use it as one even if I did smoke.  Without any indented cigarette rests, perhaps it isn't an ashtray afterall?  I never thought about it.
Title: Re: QE2 Items on Ebay
Post by: cunardqueen on Aug 20, 2011, 11:03 AM
So if we all bought what we thought was an ashtray, and it doesnt appear to be an ashtray what on earth is it?

Iv just had another look at mine, and it appears as though someone has stubbed a cig out in it, there is minor.minor damage where the heat has touched the plastic/melamine. as Kyle says there are no obvious rests on it, and you would think using it as a coin dish would damage the surface.
So what have we all got? ??? its looks as quite new to have the E2 Logo.

That Danbury Mint model is very interesting.

Look closely and you will see it is basically a 'detailed up' version of the Revell/Gunze plastic kit. You can see it is put together in exactly the same way, with the same slight errors in its design, and in a couple of places you can see the joints between the parts.

I think Danbury Mint must have aquired some sort of license to sell the kit in a built up form like this. Look at the funnel design, front of superstructure, and the way the stern sun decks are assembled in the close ups, all give this away as that kit to me!

Would explain the reasonable price too, a model made by other means that size and as good as that would surely cost a lot more new? Anyone else who is familiar with the kit see what I mean?

Regardless of it origin, its a great buy for someone, really does look very nice!  8)

I cant bleave that Cunard agreed for this to be sold\given away on there ship. It does nothing for there image.
Sellers feedback has nothing to do with weather an item is 100% genuine. If no one complains to Ebay he get good feed back.
I very much dought it is genuine given how poor\bad it is.

I recently bought a DVD of the QE2 and found it a really good buy. It features many of the parts of the liner that are on Rob's excellant DVD but as they were when the liner was in service. Lots of views from all over the ship--if any members have bought this DVD or are going to buy it, maybe they will see themselves. :) It is one i can heartily recommend. Here is the link to the E-Bay page--

This photograph has turned up a couple of times before -- but now, there are extra pictures as well. I have no idea what the sought price was on previous occasions, but a starting price of GBP 1,500 looks quite steep to me. Or is it? I am no expert...

Just in case it disappears, I wanted to quote the seller's blurb, at least in part :

Quote from: seller thepurserslockerltd
VERY RARE, RMS 'QUEEN ELIZABETH 2' QUEENS ROOM LOUNGE CHAIR DESIGNED BY THE ROOMS DESIGNER MICHAEL INCHBALD AND MANUFACTURED BY THE FAMOUS ENGLISH FIRM OF LURASHELL IN 1969. INTERESTINGLY MARKED '1ST CLASS LOUNGE'

<snip>

THESE WERE REMOVED FROM THE SHIP IN 1987, MOST LEGEND HAS IT BEING THROWN OVER THE SIDE ON THE WAY TO GERMANY FOR THE REFIT ENDING UP ON THE BOTTOM OF THE ENGLISH CHANNEL. A RARE RARE ITEM.

The above pen reminds me of one I had and is hopefully still in a box somewhere.  It was one of those pens with the liquid filled ends and background scenery with a sliding QE2 going back and forth as the pen is tipped.  I think one side was Southampton and the other New York.

Oh!
Please can we think about these in the context of QE2 in 1968?

Am i right in thinking they are a bit of a 'crying shame'!!
Not least, because they've been recovered   :o
and by the looks of the 'legs', do you think they look as if they've been re- 'painted'?

(Didn't 'black' furniture in the sixties 'go with' Chrome, or better still, Danish rosewood etc,
with any shiny black 'bits'/arms being made of leather - and definitely not vinyl!?
These are a reminder of the eighties and minimalist loft spaces in NYC!)

Rob, Highlander and flagship and Everyone - what do you think?
Did Robert Heritage design these in black?
These chairs are 'smart'  - but they wouldn't remind me of the genuine article.

Maybe this post and ongoing discussion can go to QE2 Furniture eventually?

I'm certain that ALL of the seats on board QE2 have been re-covered since 1968!  So the fact that these have been recovered is fairly OK with me.  Its the shape and design of the chair that is so unique and special.  The legs appear to be 'naked' aluminium to me and unaltered - complete with the original sticker.  I'm told that there are around 150 seats left (in PG) out of the 1500 that were originally on board.

QE2 originally was all about dramatic contrastic colours - white, blacks, indigos, bright reds, bright greens - and to me (no design expert though!) the striking black of these is in keeping with the late 60s.

... oh and I think its amazing that these chairs are true saught after collectors items, and design classics, 18 years (by my reckoning?) after the last ones were removed from the ship.

Yikes!  It pains me to see inaccurate or shoddy items being sold to people who don't know better, maybe this crystal item is legitimate, for examole, there is this individual who claims to be a "Master Builder" and claims his models are "historically accurate", what do you think?  I have been contemplating writing to him about my concerns...maybe I should let it go?

Tempted to say' Yes...But....!
There are other references on the forum to 'alternative' representations of QE2
ranging from QE2 cakes to the glass  encased cut glass engraved model of QE2 presented to each and every crew member as she left service with Cunard in Dubai - and not forgetting various bow-shaped buidings dotted round the world!
I'll have a look for the links later - no time now!

Your model of RMSQM id superb - and have to admit that I love the idea of keeping QE2 alive, even if it's as a bit of rather misshapen glass/ plastic!

Pity you don't require the curtains, they would have made an ideal matching pair to go with your bed cover.--and the price seems O.K as well.

I really wonder why so many QE2 related items end up on ebay (and presumably in other sales too...).

Did people buy them in order to sell them again at a profit?
Did people buy them and get tired of them?
Did the original owners die and their heirs sell the items now?

I can understand QE2 furniture being replaced and sold, possibly several times -- but that is a different story.

I would not wish to sell any of my (few) QE2 related items, but would want to keep and treasure them. Nor would I be interested in buying any QE2 related items that I had no personal connection with...

The personal connection, for several items I own, is that I received them as gifts. And they are treasured. :)
Title: Re: QE2 Items on Ebay
Post by: bobso on May 03, 2012, 08:58 AM
Good Morning Isabelle,You have raised an interesting topic here,--why DO people who purchase items that they treasure sell them on? I would imagine that people buy things to remind themselves of the wonderful time they had on a specific ship. To remind themselves of the time spent with friends, or to remind themselves of the attention lavished on them by a member or members of the crew who went out of their way to make the time spent aboard special. Maybe they buy more than one of an item with the express view of selling them later on for a profit. Maybe the person who bought the items has as you say--"passed away" and the family has no such sentiment that the person who bought it had --and they have to clear the house so to speak so the "treasured items" are simply sold on.

However, there must be thousands of people all over the world who have never been fortunate enough to travel on a particular liner but who wish to have some sort of "Keepsake" of her.--myself included-- As you know my main interest in all 3 Queens is simply that my late uncle worked on the building of all of them so for me that is my "personal" reason for collecting items from the liners that i like and can afford. Like yourself they are "Treasured" by myself as means of remembering what my uncle did in the shipyard of John Brown.

As to "why" items regularly appear for sale --maybe my post here will start a topic of conversation for others to have their say. It will be interesting to see.

Well somebody must be keen as there is a bid on it already. The buyer is quite within their rights to expect the postage at £1.00. But its still a lot to pay for something that is badly framed....

As a frequent seller (and buyer) there are a great many reasons why this is so., and when l get longer l will try and explain my reasons....

Looking forward to that, Myles!

In my early days of QE2 cruising, long before ebay started, l always liked the souvenirs, and as such bought many and various souvenirs. As you can imagine over the years a fortune has been spent in the logo shop. My first voyage if truth be told l hadn't really planned to do any more, so l stocked up with gifts and stuff for family and friends, then when l came home thought they were perhaps too good to give away, so kept them all, and really it started from there. the shops were always a place l looked at first to see what new things they had bought out, and generally made sure l bought one of everything, sometimes bought two.It didn't help but on one trip the purchases were rung through with a staff discount, so l bought more, which l lm sure wasn't what the sales man had in mind....

As was the case of the farewell trips, l ended up buying 8 of the pull along souvenir bags for the various purchases, and some of these were dispatched ashore at Greenock, laiden with stuff. right now lm sitting with 7 of these, still with the tags on, sold one last month !  Trouble is they are too good to use.

A lot of the things l sell are, if truth be told, duplicates. Some people might only have bought  a few items as a mementos, l did tend to go overboard, and still do with souvenirs. and that, lm afraid was my one weakness onboard was the logo shops, Ok so some folks thought they were expensive or tat, but l quite enjoyed these things.

The photos also,lt used to make me smile when people who had forked out for a QE2 cruise then choked on buying a professional portrait photo, l must have every photo taken onboard during the years, and if they had a promotion on with the albums which they always did, that might explain why l have 15 of these in various sizes some signed, some not, wooden and plastic, and some lovely ones from my  early days.
Moving house  recently has unearthed boxes long since packed up and full of QE2 things, undisturbed for 15 or so years.

With the advent of ebay,it does allow people to buy or sell almost anything, and right now as we speak people are actually selling direct from the QM2 onboard. As lm sure you will notice some of the stuff on ebay are made up items with the only connection to the ship being that it features a photo of QE2,and some examples listed now are to be honest copies, and very bad copies at that. How the seller gets off with it l dont know. But its ebay so buyer beware!

What is funny is when l look at what l have sold over the years, l have been quite lucky,a couple of examples, the 87 Maiden Voyage coin covers, l had two of these onboard, one has remained unopened, but Iv picked up a few extra going very cheap and indeed 7 year ago sold one with a profit of £45.00 . But do l really need four of these? and if one isnt going to be opened after 25 years well what hope is there for me.

The lifebouys (life rings) Iv actually had 3 of these the first one l picked upfor £100 9 years ago it was later resold for 8 times what l paid for it and ended up in Germany, the other one was a buyer collects, which narrows down the buyers right away, ironically to post them was only about £15.00 and really in very poor condition, the seller did eventually agree to post it,it was sold several years later again for a large profit, and that money was ploughed back into more souvenirs onboard. Ok so some might say how can you sell such an item as that, well, I enjoyed it over the time l owned it, but really the material did start to dry out and it was better to allow someone else to appreciate it. and it went to a very good home.

Harrods in the good old days sold nice quality items with the QE2/Harrods logo, the door stop captains l bought one a year for three years because l liked them, then bought the green man Harrods bear doorstop. Ebay wasnt around then, but its tempting to pop one up and see what it fetches, like l say do l really need three of them when they are in a box doing no good whatso ever?

The t shirts, owing to the good ships glorious food there is no way l can ever fit into ones bought away back in the 80s, but there's no way l can put them out, or put to charity, last count there were around 20 of them all different, l did have the notion of getting them framed, but again they are in a box, one of many l hate to say just sitting there.

The Final Crossings they had the very limited Tandem crossing whisky decanters for sale, l think these were about $250 each quite nice but no mention of what whisky was in them, the sales staff hadn't a clue,They were very good to me, in that l had a very quick sneak preview of the farewell crossing items, and in the fact l wanted two of them they did kindly hold two back for me  in the mad sales rush. I know l would never get the money back on these if l sold them. But again its nice to have one for the whisky collection, and the other was given as a gift,Both signed by the Captain. and both will never be opened, but then a whisky collector never really opens what he has.

When l look at a lot of the stuff on ebay l can say gosh l had that, or sold that, or its in a box somewhere.Only once did l ever think oh l wish l had kept that.  When l do sell some things, over the years l seemed to have acquired what l think is  a very good buyer base, with several Cunard staff right upto two Captains who have made purchases and l think its testament to the buyers that l can post the stuff out to them and they will settle up,but then the QE2 lot are very trusting and honest. It happened with two buyers, rather than post the item out to them, we exchanged actually onboard QE2 herself. It really is a small world out there!

In the Farewell year it really was amazing just how many people would email with their stories of the items l were selling and how much they loved QE2 and how sad it was that she was going so early, but we know that anyway.

Only last month l took a trip down to Devon to collect an ebay purchase, Salute to a Queen, the seller wouldn't post it, she did offer to break the frame and send the print rolled up in a tube. I negotiated a very good deal on the basis l would collect it from the other end of the country. And l did just that, as fate would have it won a prize of a nights stay near to where she stayed, the seller had the print all wrapped up and dropped off at the hotel,I just had to get it upto London to where l was staying before getting it on the sleeper train back to Aberdeen and onto Elgin, It arrived home safely, l unpacked it,marvelled at it,took a photo of my other print, exactly the same ! which was bought onboard some 24 years ago re wrapped it and its away upto the attic. Do l really need two of the same prints, No! but it was going for such a stupid price that l couldn't say no. some might say its a crazy thing to do, and they might well be right....But its QE2 and she has that effect.

In some small way lm only a guardian of what l have, and as such its nice to pass ownership to someone else, but really for me the main mementos of each of my cruises were not what l bought, but the memories, and the memories of sailing on what is for me a very special and loved ship  is something l cannot put a price on,They cannot be sold, only shared. So next time you see something from QE2 for sale on ebay it might just be from that idiot Cunardqueen........   ;)

Myles, this is a wonderful read! Like you, this ship really took a hold of you and I too was eager to buy up what I could. My growing collection of memorabilia must represent a molehill compared to your mountain of goods. I still trawl eBay on a daily basis but I have not made many purchases recently. I will treasure what I have and am very reluctant to see any of it move on. Maybe someday it'll be worth pulling together an exhhibition of some favoured items? Cheers :)

Good Morning Myles, Your message was indeed a great story to read. You seem to have a heck of a lot of QE2 items gathered over the years and good for you. I have bought some of the items you had for sale on E-bay from you in the past and i will be purchasing more from you in the future. I have always found you to be a polite seller with great correspondance over items you sell at reasonble prices. I think you are doing yourself a great injustice by saying --"So next time you see something from QE2 for sale on ebay it might just be from that idiot Cunardqueen"---you are FAR AWAY from being an "idiot"--you are one of lifes "REAL GENTLEMEN" and someone i am REALLY happy to call a friend. :)

Myles, absolutely nothing wrong with keeping one pristine example for yourself and trading the rest for a profit.  All that demonstrates is good business sense while still retaining your personal memories and collection.

I first joined in 1971 and I do not recall it. Nor do I recall ANY adornments to the Queens room, Michael Inchbald who did most of the design work on the Queens room would have had a fit if something like this adorned his creation.
I am not saying that it did not hang somewhere else...selective memory perhaps?

There is also the thing about"given to him by the Captain".....as far as I know unless the gift was given in a private
ceremony and classified as personal to the Capt and marked as such, then the "gift"  became the property of QE2 and Cunard line, not for the Capt to give away!
Title: Re: QE2 Items on Ebay

Thank you, Rod. Yes, the whole thing seems more than fishy.

I suppose there would have been one other way in which it could have been legally "given by the Captain", i.e. if he was doing it officially on behalf of Cunard. Which is very unlikely...

Viewing it in larger image format, does the outline of the ship - especially the penthouse area - match the claim it was made in 1970?

I think not.   The photo shows the first set of penthouse suites installed in 1972.  The photo was taken between 1972 and 1977 as the QM and QE suites were added in 1978.

Thanks But already have two of these, However for what its worth, its mentioned as "used" :o :o   and the seller is breaking the ebay rules with this listing.

You could in theory, place a bid, report the item for various reasons..and it would be removed, then contact the seller and you might, just might, get it for the price.... But that is not in the spirit of Ebay.

It might seem expensive..but if you actually have  the real one then you can judge for yourself. Personally lv owned one for many years But l would still gladly pay around £20 for the item. It is also heavier than it looks.
Another example of bad ebay listing policy it is quite clearly a pen knife, but try selling such things and your up against a brick wall

It still isnt correct and does not comply fully with the ebay terms and conditions.

To reply to you Myles--the lady has been in touch with E-Bay and they have allowed the auction to go ahead. At the end of the day--does it REALLY matter THAT much to the average bidder if the item does not comply  with the conditions?

There is also the following at the end of her description---

IN COMPLIANCE WITH EBAY POLICY

The value of the Auctioned Item is in the Collectible Container, Not it's contents.
The Container has not been opened, but that any incidental contents are not intended for consumption.
The item is not available at any retail outlet, and the container has a value that substantially exceeds the current retail price of the alcohol in the container.
Buyers of these collectibles must be of lawful age (18 Years old in the UK., 21 Years old on the US.
I am in Compliance with all the applicable laws and delivery regulations in carrying out this transaction.
I Cannot be held responsible for breakage of glass in transit

Im afraid Ebay have these policies in place to protect both the buyer and seller. If people decide to disregard these conditions.....well that is entirely upto them..and l shall say nothing more on this subject..

Nice touch!

Now the auction has finished i just wondered if any member of the Forum was the winning bidder?

That does in fact meet the e-Bay rules; these things can indeed be sold as collectibles in those circumstances - but certainly not for consumption.

However to set the record straight once and for all  ::) and at the risk of being pedantic, the seller has in fact changed the listing.. but regarding the sale of alcohol on ebay their policy is as follows..

Quote
Each of the following conditions must be met and stated word for word in the listing, in the same font size as the rest of the description:The value of the item is in the collectable container, not its contents.

The container has not been opened and any incidental contents are not intended for consumption.

The item is not available at any retail outlet, and the container has a value that substantially exceeds the current retail price of the alcohol in the container.

The seller will take all appropriate steps to ensure that the buyer is of lawful age in the buyer’s and seller's jurisdiction (generally 18 years of age in the UK and Republic of Ireland).

Buyers and sellers both ensure that the sale complies with all applicable laws and postage regulations.

We suggest copying the above bullet points and pasting this text directly into your listing.

When you have had as much experience with ebay customer care as l have when they remove your listings for alcohol or related items, then you can speak with a greater knowledge about it.

and for whats its worth and a word of warning to buyers, IF you do see a seller with the "i am not responsable for any loss or damage" on their site.  Most of the time the seller IS liable and sadly most dont realise it .    Thanks to a carefully worded statement when you accept paypal terms and conditions, which we have all read havent we...  :-X

Ebay l have noticed in recent times are clamping down very tight on the items such as alcohol sales.

Good luck to the seller of the item, and to the forum member bidding on it  ;)

Thanks But already have two of these, However for what its worth, its mentioned as "used" :o :o   and the seller is breaking the ebay rules with this listing.

You could in theory, place a bid, report the item for various reasons..and it would be removed, then contact the seller and you might, just might, get it for the price.... But that is not in the spirit of Ebay.

Well Myles--the whisky sold--i wonder who the winning bidder was?-- :-X-- :P-- :-*

Hi Myles, I just wondered how much you did pay for you Q E 2 leather folder. I took the opertunity of buying mine for $5, from Cunard on the day of our final Q E 2 cruise on November 11th 2008. They said that if you took it as a "Upaid Souvenir" you would have a charge of $15 added to your credit card account!..So it worked out about £3-50 at the time. Not bad for a good keep sake. Im still very miffed that Cunard did not give us any present what so ever as a little momento .

Do you mean the incabin information folder ? the folder pictured is the one that the waiter would present your bar chit to sign.
As for the incabin folder my stewardess from l think 2001,  l always happened to see onboard every voyage, she gave me an incabin folder when l saw her on the 11th November for the last time.l gave her one of my badges.

A rather good painting of The Ship in her earliest days. From what I can find online John Nicholson is [was]
a Leeds based commercial marine artist, his paintings being used mostly for postcard production. The sale is
next saturday (21 July) and I'm sure they'd take commission bids over the phone or even live phone bids if you asked nicely. No indication of the size, but at an estimate of £20-£30 it must be worth a punt to one of you.

Just noticed on the Ebay (Cunard) category,  someone is auctioning of a piece of carpet, which is mounted in rather a large frame, the carpet apparently is from the main lobby and is mostly of the "Cunard Golden Lion" crest which was removed on the her last refit

The carpet seller keeps changing his mind and l dont think has any idea of what hes selling, first of all it cant be rolled up as its fixed to the wooden backing, then it can, then he wont post it saying that its collect only then he s offering £25 courier shipping then he cancels it as he wants to appeal to the overseas market, but he wont ship overseas. and trying to get that last photo showing it all in its place was like getting blood from a stone..
Then to top it all... he removes the listing AGAIN !!! bids had reached  over £300...

QE2 32 original Blueprints covering all decks for sale on ebay.  Starting price £4923.  Ouch just a bit steep.

The seller gives quite a bit of information including:

"Cunard Line: One of the most important collections of original QE2 builders' plans in existence - 32 John Brown Shipyard plans from 1968 and 1969 that cover the ship deck-by-deck and top-to-bottom.

These plans have been diligently tracked down by an intrepid QE2 collector over a ten year period. He's enjoyed the chase, now it's time to find a new home for this treasure trove..........."

Reminds me that, some years ago, I found a set of 5 blueprints of QE2 general arrangements on ebay.

Apparently dating from the 1994 refit, they're not as «original» as the John Brown blueprints, but luckily for me, they were considerably cheaper (85 $).

I have the set from 2000 trouble is when each sheet measures 5 ft by 3 ft its aheck of a job to get them out just to look at. I did get them reduced to a more managable size and laminated.

The ones below..15 ft tall

I wonder if this might be one of the long lost photos taken by John Jochimsen which were mentioned in this topic.

On a whim, I successfully bid and won this very door late last year. However, my wife didn't take the fantastic news quite the same and so I had to let the owner know that the wifey disapproved and couldn't go through with the bid. (Sigh) ;)

What a co-incidence! Was it as expensive as it is now when you won it?

Need a new deckhouse door on Lone Gerd. Sadly it is much to wide at 37 inches. Only need 24 inch. It will probably cost as much to have a new one made!

Adam, I think the price has stayed the same though I don't quite remember now. Funny enough, at the time we also needed (still need)a new backdoor to the house we're about to move out of and rent. However, the dimensions were also off. Also interesting to note is that the new door we'll be installing before we leave costs about the same (not factoring in shipping costs from the UK to the States, as the old hatch door.

Oh,  by the way, I believe the owner had told me that the door belonged to the open area between the mast and funnel that was replaced with the penthouse suites.

Yes I read that somewhere. It said that the door came from there when they built the penthouses.

Alex Habgood has written to us, drawing our attention to some interesting items he is selling on ebay :

Quote from: Alex Habgood
I am selling a large collection of QE2 items on eBay and was wondering if you might be kind enough to mention the listing to the members of your forum.

It includes several items related to the maiden and final voyages of the ship including a maiden voyage passenger list.

I am not sure if this will be of any interest or not, or if you will be able to help me by mentioning it, but I just wanted to make you aware in case your members might want any of the items for their own collections.

Here is the link to the auction......
