Title: 1967 QE2 jigsaw no2 - Transatlantic QE2 - have a try!
Post by: Isabelle Prondzynski on Dec 31, 2011, 06:35 PM
This Christmas, one of my most wonderful presents was a QE2 jigsaw from 1967 (sic!), showing her arrival in New York City, with all the skyscrapers in the background :

(http://farm8.staticflickr.com/7162/6607851929_c3fe36665d.jpg) (https://www.flickr.com/photos/prondis_in_kenya/6607851929/)
The completed jigsaw of QE2 (https://www.flickr.com/photos/prondis_in_kenya/6607851929/) by prondis_in_kenya (https://www.flickr.com/people/prondis_in_kenya/), on Flickr

My Mum, Pia and I managed to complete this 500-piece jigsaw in two evenings, and we thoroughly enjoyed it. The picture is not only of a beautiful ship, but it is also beautifully painted.

This made me wonder whether anyone would like to borrow it? I would be happy to put it into circulation, sending it to the first person who wants to give it a go, and just ask for it to come back to us in time for next Christmas.

I would place a paper in the box, indicating who worked on it, when and for how long, so that we can collect a "history" of the tour it takes, and can perhaps work out who took the longest, and who assembled it the fastest!

Anyone interested?

I would love to give making up the jigsaw a try.  Put me on the list of people wanting to try out the jigsaw.  It will be interesting to see how many places the jigsaw visits on it's travels.

I would strongly advise using Special Delivery if sending this through the postal system...

Nice to see the interest! Could I then ask Lynda to send me her address by PM -- and Louis, could you send yours to Lynda, please?

Next person, please let us know here -- and then send your address by PM to Louis so that he can forward the jigsaw after it has been laid.

No hurry by the way -- we have all year to circulate this within the Forum, and if necessary, even longer.

Have fun!    :D

Not yet, Louis. This will happen at the beginning of February, and it will be to Lynda. Hope you will enjoy it when it comes!

A great idea Is and will certainly have a go but it will be a while before I have the time unfortunately.  However, may I suggest that each person posts a picture of themselves alongside the completed puzzle

What a brilliant idea Isabelle. I would love to join in however would not recommend anyone trying to send it to me in the Middle East. It just cost me 70GBP to courier home my driving licence couterpart so a 60GBP speeding fine could be paid! Maybe when I'm back in the UK I can join in  ;D

Have fun

I was delighted when the postman delivered the jigsaw this morning.  I am going to take some time tomorrow to start but as it has been some time since I last done a jigsaw puzzle it may take some time to make up the puzzle.   ;D

Watch this space for progress report.  ;D

Louis, you are in for a treat.  I thoroughly enjoyed spending time on making up the Jigsaw.  I must admit it took longer than I had expected as I had worked on it for a total of 10 hours.  But it became quite addictive and I found it hard to leave it.   When completed the jigsaw gives a good perspective of QE2.  I loved making up the part of the jigsaw with the tug a the front of the photo.  There was such a lot of detail in this small boat.

I will put the jigsaw in the post to Louis either tomorrow or Wednesday.

It would be good if some other members also volunteered for this fun project.

So glad to see that you had some fun (and no doubt some good memories) with this puzzle!

How could I forget the skyscrapers.  When I started to complete that section it looked like I had lots of pieces the same colour but once I tuned in it was quite a good section to do, especially as I had left that section to last and I knew the jigsaw would be completed when I finished that area.

My Mum worked on that section -- saying "How can anyone build such an ugly ship?"... Until she realised that it was not a ship at all, but a skyscraper. Nowadays, it is often the opposite -- we see a skyscraper, and only later realise that it is actually a ship!

Just to say that this bit of fun we were having earlier this year, stopped in its tracks because the jigsaw has never been returned!  If it ever reappears, we'll resume the "Have a try" Jigsaw game!

The jigsaw - Missing?
Why would any forum member not return it...?
This feels incredibly sad, and in memory of QE2; it sounds very much out of character.
If someone has mislaid it, hopefully it will be returned as soon as possible - Please.

Maybe he is trying to make a copy of it......

Personally if l was involved l would place a note on this persons website or facebook page advising that "despite various emails etc which have gone unanswered WHY hasnt this been returned..it is after all in the spirit of QE2, a ship you worked on and we thought had some affection for...  >:("
If its any help, l would be more than happy to lend my one out.

Obviously still no answers !! It is not much consolation but I have tried to find another copy of said "Jigsaw" with no joy at present on the internet, however if I do I am more than willing to purchase said jigsaw & donate it to the forum for distribution after having a go myself of course, there are a few other jigsaws featuring the QE11 available, however they are photo/jigsaws rather than a painting, again if anyone whats to "have a try"
I am more than willing to purchase these and donate to the forum

I do hope that the original one will return to circulation, and would of course be very happy for it to continue doing the rounds of the Forum. Christmas in particular is such a good time for a family jigsaw session.

As it appears that Louis has kept the jigsaw for reasons to himself, and quite what they are is anyones guess.
So in order that we can keep the legend alive, allow me to loan out one of my jigsaws, its sitting here doing absolutely nothing and lm sure it can do with the travels..
All l ask is that when its completed that a photo is posted on here .

So lets start the ball rolling..

Hello Myles, that is an excellent idea and so generous of you!

Could you possibly take a picture of the jigsaw and tell us how many pieces to expect?

There was already one possible candidate to try it out next -- and there may be others. Looking forward to puzzling it out myself too :) .

I'm delighted to say that the jigsaw has made an unexpected reappearance, after a year of being missing!  Still no idea why it disappeared for so long...

Anyway onwards and upwards...

Rod was the next person I think, having read the topic - so Rod would you like to give it a try?  You have to take a photo of yourself with the completed jigsaw, and then either send it back to me or on to the next person.

Hi All -- When I arrived home from work yesterday evening, our beloved QE2 was waiting for me, docked alongside my house - in the form of the QE2 jigsaw !  (Ah, how I wish she could be docked alongside one of our houses - we could take turns !)

Thank you, Rod, very much for sending the jigsaw along to me.

After giving three violin classes in the evening, I got down to doing what I had been anticipating all evening !

The puzzle is opened - it is spread out to start work - border is done !

More tonight !!

Hi Rod - Thanks for your post.  I usually do pretty well on the border, and I can see QE2 herself being fit together fairly fast.  BUT, I can see myself slowing way down on the water and the skyscrapers.  I'll take another picture tonight.

The only jigsaw better travelled than that one, is probably the ones that travelled around the world on board QE2!

The order in which you assembled the jigsaw, is a bit different from ours! But there were three of us, and we each took a different side of the table, once the frame had been laid.

Hi Isabelle - Thank you very much for your post.  The jigsaw is quite a well-travelled jigsaw.  As Rob said, probably the most travelled jigsaw aside from the ones on QE2 herself.  Actually, once I had outlined the puzzle, the next three parts I did were "Queen Elizabeth 2", "Cunard", and her bow also.  Hopefully, I will be able to finish tonight.  Anyone interested in being the next "builder" ?  June

Hi Rob - Thank you very much for your post and kind words.  Evening three, and the QE2 jigsaw puzzle is finished.  I had not done a jigsaw puzzle in quite some time.  I enjoy doing them very much and had a great time fitting together our QE2 in puzzle form.  Attached are some photos including some close-ups.  Who is the next person in line for the jigsaw ?  June

Hi Isabelle - Thanks very much for your post.  Yes, the puzzle has already been seen by four of my students, and there was considerable discussion concerning QE2 prior to each lesson.  And, I just found out that one of our faculty members has travelled extensively on QE2.  Her face brightened with the mention of QE2.  June

QE2 has that effect on people who know her and have travelled on her.

Seeing the jigsaw completed brings back memories of the sense of achievement when the jigsaw was finished and the delight of taking time to stand and stare and remember this great ship.

I wonder who will be next to volunteer and which part of the world the jigsaw will go to next.

Dear Pete, I am delighted that you are grasping the nettle and getting ready to rebuild QE2 all over again!

And June, thank you for the pictures -- it is such a joy to see the wonderful jigsaw being used, and I am sure it was fun for all concerned too. Memories of that far larger jigsaw on the ship... and so nice to hear about your student's reaction.

And it is a real bonus to see that all pieces are there. Losses are often hard to avoid, but it is great that they have not yet happened :) .

Hi Pete - QE2 (jigsaw) should be in England.  :)

We should try to keep track of the number of miles its travelled.

Also - how about a signed piece of paper in the box, logging who, where, when?

Glad this topic is back on track, and in the spirit with which it was originally conceived!

At some point I'd like to have a go at it myself...  :)

I'd also suggest that where members are within an hour or two of each other, we should aim at personal rather than postal handovers in order to minimise the risk to the jigsaw, and that if it has to be posted we should only use Special Delivery ( Recorded does NOT offer tracking and is lumped in with ordinary post for the transit stage ) or the international equivalent?

So far we have not made a list of either who has completed the jigsaw or who is interested in doing the jigsaw in the future, but it sounds like a good idea especially so that we can see the places the jigsaw has visited.

Hi Peter - I think you would enjoy "building" QE2 in the form of the puzzle.  Also, I think it is a very good idea to hand deliver the jigsaw wherever possible to preserve it in the best condition possible and avoid loss.

Hi Barrie - Likewise, I think you would enjoy fitting together the QE2 jigsaw.  I felt in awe of QE2 while doing so !

Hi Isabelle - Do you think it is possible to reconstruct who has done the puzzle and also to calculate the miles travelled ?  From Rod's house to mine is 1247 miles.  I tried to calculate from mine to Pete Cain's but not sure how to do it.  Any navigators here who can help ?

Hi Lynda - Do you think we can reconstruct who has done the jigsaw and the routes it has travelled ?  I mentioned the number of miles from Rod's house to mine in the previous post.  Did the puzzle start out with you, Isabelle, or Rob ?
Title: Re: QE2 jigsaw -- have a try!
Post by: Isabelle Prondzynski on Dec 19, 2013, 09:22 PM
The puzzle started out with :

Rob in Scotland, then travelled to
Isabelle in Ireland, from there to
Lynda in Scotland, and to
Louis in Germany, then to
Rod in the USA,
June in the USA,
Pete in England...

... and on from there!

Could we also send it to Switzerland, France and Luxembourg perhaps?
And from there to Australia and New Zealand, perhaps even Singapore?

One day, it will hopefully come back to me, as it was Rob's gift to me that started it on the journey :) .

Thank you, Rob, for your kind present and for allowing me to share it with the Forum!

If you read this thread from the beginning, the various stages and dates can be followed from my 2011 Christmas on... what adventures this jigsaw has already had!

QE2 ready to set sail on her 2014 season, (if only) it's been an honour being a part of this story,
interesting to note on side of box  ---  copyright 1967 Cunard Steamship Company. On its way tomorrow to you Helen, Happy  New Year from me'n' Jim, he's tired after a bad new years eve with fireworks

Thanks Pete for sharing the fun you have had doing the jigsaw and for sending the jigsaw on it's way for the 2014 Season.

Looking forward to hearing from Helen on the progress of the Jigsaw.

Hi June, all the best to you for 2014, I've got to admit that I had help from my wife yesterday , when I gave myself a headache trying to match the water/sea pieces, or it might've been the vino, got to admit she was more interested in playing with her ipod, taking pictures , all in all good fun.

Hi Pete - Thank you very much for your post and good wishes.  All good wishes to you and your family for 2014 and to our beloved QE2.  Again, the pictures are great and Jim seems very well pleased with the outcome of the jigsaw.  June

Sorry for the delay, work has kept me extremely busy.

Finally sat down and started it on Wednesday night and then finished it last night. It was great seeing it come together. And really enjoyed doing it.

So where is it going next??

Wonderful to see this succession of pictures, and the jigsaw taking shape! So glad to see you enjoyed it.

It is so interesting how we all have our own jigsaw methods -- even in my family, we each approach it differently :)

Helen, the next volunteer is Peter Mugridge -- could I ask the two of you to get in touch with each other please, so that it can be sent to the right address?

Sorry, hadn't noticed there was already a topic about this one!

Well, thanks for the proposal Isabelle, but even without mentioning that I'm close to complete incompetence as a jigsaw practiser, I wouldn't dare risk this precious item in any postal service hands right now.

Reason is I'm currently dealing with two cases of international postal carelessness, one being the complete destruction of a well-protected parcel and its content, the other the disappearance without trace of the parcel itself. Not sure to be wanting a third case...

Hi,

I originally gave the first jigsaw to Isabelle as a gift, as I knew she liked doing jigsaws.

When she suggested sending it on to forum members, it seemed a delightful, generous suggestion, which I fully supported.  The fact that it could get lost in the postal system, or damaged, is part of the reason she was being so generous.

So we all accept it can get lost or damaged, although we do what we can to prevent this, and enjoy the fun for as long as it can last!   It might be an idea to post the tracking number on this topic each time the jigsaw sets off on another journey, so that we can all follow it on its way.

If either of the jigsaws gets lost or damaged, we'll all understand.  This is why we found it so hard to accept when it went missing for a year, and the holder wouldn't reply to any emails about it!

But for now, lets see how long we can continue to enjoy this.  Looking forward to Peter's photos - if possible showing yourself with the jigsaw before, during and after completion!

- Rob

Yes, there will indeed be photos - they may not be up to the usual standard as they'll have to be done on an instant camera - been offered a digital but I need to collect it from Lincoln so it'll be a few weeks before I can get it...

Post by: Peter Mugridge on Jan 26, 2014, 09:21 PM
Well... it's done!  :)

Photos will follow - didn't have enough instant film to hand so we did some pictures on my wife's camera, but we're only half way through the film, so there will be somewhat of a time lag but the proof of doing will be shown in due course.

Meanwhile, the total time elapsed, including the occasional interruption from the kids, was 2h20 from start to finish...  I have added the time taken information to the "log book" that is with the jigsaw in addition to my name, location and date.

So.... who is next please?

Hi All,

QE2 docked a little while ago now in Cherry Hinton after a safe passage over from Barrie. Work commitments got in the way of a prompt start on the refit I'm afraid, but we can finally report that she has been properly fitted out and is now awaiting the next instalment of her voyage.

Debra and I thoroughly enjoyed doing the puzzle - so thanks to all involved. It's a lovely idea and brought back many memories to us both during the build. My original plan was to see if we could set a fastest time for the re-build, but the old girl refused to be rushed! I found I didn't really want to complete it and she waited for some time before the final pieces were fitted together. In the end it was a family affair - we placed the last pieces in together.

One thing that amazed me was that no-one hid a piece away so as to guarantee being the person to actually complete the puzzle. (Something which I think became a bit of a tradition with the large puzzles which were available for everyone to have a go at on the ship herself!).

Attached are some pics of the refit.

Where is she due to sail to next? Perhaps someone can let me know who's next on the list and I can arrange the Pilot.

Jim

Great to see the photos and get the news of the Transatlantic QE2 refit! How wonderful that she is now intact and ready for her next voyage :) .

Interesting assembly method too -- and a fascinating table!

As you will have seen, there is also a second jigsaw waiting to be sent to you, Jim -- the Cruising QE2, currently awaiting a transatlantic voyage after her refit in Port June. If you are ready for this, could you please send a PM to June Ingram to let her know your whereabouts?

As for the jigsaw you have just completed, the next person on the list is jdl -- could you please make contact to obtain the address?

The third QE2 jigsaw currently circulating is with me and should be finished her refit within the next couple of weeks. Such a pleasant way for us all to be in touch with each other and share the good things of the Forum  ;D .

Hi Isabelle,

The table is a glass topped item (Actually from IKEA !) which I modified so that I could put a montage of the collection of paper money we managed to accumulate during my time at sea on the ship. Most of the notes are small face value, but they make a good conversation piece and bring back many memories. One is a Hong Kong 1 cent piece which is only printed on one side!

Happy days!

Jim
