Title: Lighting on board QE2
Post by: Twynkle on Aug 05, 2011, 04:43 PM
Lighting is/was one of the key features of QE2.
From the early days, many of the lights in use were designed to go with the modern 'new look'
In some places, they were understated, in others  - they were very much in evidence
All in all they made life on board all the more interesting....

There must be hundreds of images of QE2 lit up - both inside, as well as out...
Maybe sometime in the future these lights could be changed for ever.
If they are, at least here there could be a record of just how significant the lighting has been.
Please Everyone, wouldn't it be brilliant to have different examples of all the different types and effects of the lights on board!

And technically speaking - where were the lights controlled from?
And fitting new light bulbs - wasn't this just a bit more challenging in certain places....?

Those photos are absolute beauties! And they bring back life on QE2 so much...

I hope that someone will choose "Lighting on QE2" as a future Photo of the Month topic, so that we can select the very best of this excellent series for a future calendar  :D .

The lighting was so important on board QE2.  I love these stunning photos.

I have added Lighting onboard QE2, as a possible topic for a future photo of the month, as suggested by Isabelle.

Please - does anyone know when the lovely white globe lamps were installed?

And....has someone got an enlarged image of the original uplighters in the Princes Grill bar?

I clearly remember the globe lights - albeit with dark smoked glass - in 1987.

The lighting on the QE2 is fantastic. I think that the places with the best lighting were of course The Queens Room (especially the original one with the chairs lit up underneath), The Midships Lobby and the Yacht Club.

Hi Adam,
Not too sure what you are referring to regarding the QR chairs being lit from underneath...however I wonder whether you noticed in Cunarder Man's photo #5 on the first post in this topic, there are really beautiful lights that are alongside the seats set under frosted glass in the wooden casing. These were/are a really clever idea - enabling the main lights over the ballroom floor to shine solely in the ballroon and the other big round lights at seat level allowed for a glow rather than a glare!
The transformation in the Queens Room that took place between daylight hours and after dark was  extraordinary, and due entirely to incredibly clever lighting arrangements.
During sailings in the north, when in waters of the 'midnight sun', even then the curtains along the covered promenade along both sides of the Queen's room were always drawn at about 18.00 hrs; always before cocktail parties and the evening's entertainment. It was somewhat strange, having spent the evening in the QR, to go out on deck to find broad daylight at 2300hrs!
The Pursers Office also had/has interesting lighting, you'll find this here, too:

Hi Rosie, thanks for your post. Sorry, what I was referring to was not very well worded. If you look at the original Queen's Room design you will see that along the boards than now house the frosted bowl type lights, originally there were lights along the side of those near the floor. This gave the effect of illuminating them from underneath. Hopefully I'm making a bit more sense now.  :)

Please look at the attached pages from the VADS journal. http://vads.ac.uk/diad/article.php?title=244&year=1969&article=d.244.39

Title: Dartington Crystal Chandelier on QE2 ?
Post by: Lynda Bradford on Feb 11, 2018, 03:12 PM
We have received a request in the admin mail box in relation to a Dartington Crystal Chandelier.  Does anyone have any memory of this Chandelier on QE2.  See pictures below

Quote
I have a large Dartington Crystal Chandelier and believe the pair to it is on The QE2,

On a 1979 brochure there is a picture that show a "similar" looking chandelier in one of the promotional pictures for the Queens Grill.  Is it the same and if it was removed why would it be removed and when?

Lynda

Since we EMailed about this this morning I have been looking into chandeliers in the Queens Grill. Four were fitted when the room was built in 1972 and they remained in the room, surving several new looks and refurbishments until the 1996 refit.

I cannot say for sure whether this persons chandelier is one of the four that hung here but it does look similar...although the person's chandeliere seems to have several layers whereas QE2's looks like two layers.

Thanks Michael

The chandeliers in the pictures look similar, but with less layers as you mentioned.

Just looking at all the glass pallets, I would love to put a small LED above every single one of then and look what the affect would :)

Michael has spoken of the crystal chandeliers in The Queen's Grill, but they appear to have only two layers.   :)

Hi Pete and All

Look what I found!!
Looks like they/one were/was in in Steyning, on the South Coast - moved to Austria last year! :(

Early images of the Queens Grill would be very interesting.
Dartington glass is really very special - a visit to where it is made comes highly recommended.

Excellent Rosie ,  notice the price?
Well found June, well fixed Rod, havn't the foggiest whereabouts on board they were, looks far too expensive for my feet to've ever trodden underneath them.

Beautiful things, also the seats , early days for QE2 I bet.
She so was well appointed eh?

Now tell me....where is it on the ship?

The chairs remind me of the Queen's Grill -- but I have no memory whatever of the chandelier...

Later : I should remember that it is good for me to read before writing. Michael, in the post to which the photo is attached, actually says that it is in the Queen's Grill...   :-[

Thanks, Rod, for fixing the photo. And there is a great deal of information and other photos in Michael's posts in the chandelier topic.  :)

Right then sticking my head above the parapet but, are they the same 3 tier type as advertised & found by Rosie ?.
These only look like 2 tier chanderlier   as mentioned previously by June  , I'm confused for a change..

Hi Pete - I think we are all wondering. Michael said in his post that the chandeliers were two tiered, but both Rosie and Lynda made posts about the chandeliers currently under discussion. Were they changed when removed from QE2, or were they modified when installed on QE2 and then the third tier added back when removed. The mystery deepens !  ;D

Photo attached taken, I think, on board QE2 eleven years ago today.

It shows perfectly how clever the lighting effects were.  The Queen's Room lights are dimmed right down low, allowing the tabletop candles to sparkle and add subtle elegance to the space.

I remember this exact lighting and the atmosphere it created, but whilst sitting in the Chart Room and also in the Lido during dinner (candles on the tables in both rooms in cup type vases). I miss it.
