Title: QE2 Transart Brochure 1969
Post by: Rob Lightbody on Dec 13, 2010, 06:39 PM
I received my copy of this lovely, lovely original publication tonight - its even in its original box!

Amusingly, one of the pages has been bound upside down - but I got a discount because of this!

This is the book with the transparent cutaway sheets.

I'll post some photos of it soon (not scans) although i know its been mentioned on the forum a number of times previously, I think it definitely deserves its very own topic!

A box?  Wow!  I've never heard mention of a box with this.   A box will only add oodles to it's collectible value.  Congratulations on finally getting your hands on a copy.   :D
I don't want to ask you what you paid... but I'm dying to know of course!   ;)

Hey Rob,

The upside-down-ness of a page -
mightn't it be a bit like stamps that have a mis-print?
These are always more valuable than one that don't!...
On the other hand - books possible don't count in the same way
Anyway, well done! - and very much looking forward to
the arrival of the pix on the Forum!

Looking at the overlays with the decks being stripped off for the internal views gives me the chills.  It reminds me of what SS France/Norway/Blue Lady looked like in her final days.  Praying that this is the only way QE2 is ever portrayed as such!

Rob,

That is an absolute masterpiece!! Especially like the last cutaway showing the machinery space - from a distance it looks like a submarine.

Thanks for posting these images - thats definitely an item to treasure!

The logo is very interesting as well; although it looks very nice I think they did do the right thing by changing it later to the more square one we know so well.

The logo is very interesting as well; although it looks very nice I think they did do the right thing by changing it later to the more square one we know so well.

The colors in the logo are also the original ones used for three main stairways; A - Blue, D - White and G -Red (all the rest were yellowish orange - yes, I know E was a main stairway too).

This makes me want my time machine now more than ever!

Title: Rare book ? (QE2 Transart 1969 Brochure)
Post by: peter ward on Feb 02, 2011, 04:57 PM
Does anyone have one of these ? Its a book which I think was put in the first class passenger  cabins during the early day's. Its about 50cm x 25 cm ..and it has an amazing centrefold acetate section with a picture of the  old lady and when you lift each acetate reveals  another deck right down to the engines ..I 've taken some pics which I'll upload  but they don't do justice ..It also names the captain and officers..captain william eldon warwick ,staff captain george edward smith ,chief engineer donald wilson, hotel manager james smith.and executive chef arthur townsend.its a fascinating book which also inclludes a manifesto for a round trip southampton new york ..i.e . 3,300 bath mats ...5,684 tablecloths .1000 bottles of champagne..150lb of caviar and 50lb of dog biscuits!! The binder has a bit of damage as does the cover ,but the pages are immaculate..

Title: Original QE2 1969 Transatlantic Brochure (Book)
Post by: Chris Frame on Mar 30, 2012, 02:06 AM
A very very special gift arrived in the mail for me today. It came from fellow Cunard Insights Lecturer and his wife who sailed on QE2's maiden transatlantic.

The book is about 50cm long by 30cm wide, and has some amazing imagery.

It details the history of Cunard, QE2 to date, the people behind the ship (Sir Basil, Commodore Warwick etc) and the interior.

I particularly like the artists rendition of the Grill Room!

Seems like they are gradually making their way to owners who really appreciate them. Congratulations, Chris, this one has found an excellent home!

I tend to prefer these water-coloured cutaway drawings to the computer generated 3D views of today.

They had more style and personality.

This book in itself is a beautiful work of art.

I purchased a Transart Brochure from Ebay last year and just absolutely love it.  It is in good condition, although it did not have it's original box.  I had previously bid a couple of times and been unsuccessful, but this time I was determined to get it.

I love looking at the photos of the ship in her original decor and the section with the plan of the ship detailing all the areas of the ship from the funnel to the fresh water cooling plan is brilliant.

I have seen eBay ranging from £50 to £100 depending on the condition and the number of bidders.  I am sure the person who is selling would be willing to negotiate.

Neil - just to let you know that its worth a fair bit, especially in good condition and with that original cover.  I'm not sure exactly how much but potentially 3 figures to the right person.

The QE2 Transart brochure is a desirable item.  I purchased one on ebay a few years ago and I think it cost me around £75 at the time.  There was a lot of interest from bidders.

Buyer beware - just a bit of advice if you are looking for one of the Transart brochures on E-bay or other location.  Ask questions such as:

- are all pages present
- is the hardcover damaged
- do any of the pages, especially the acetates have any damage
- is it musty and to what extent
- is the deck plan included
- is the original cardboard jacket included and what is its condition

I negotiated one on E-bay for 25 GBP knowing it had some issues.  If I had asked additional questions, I probably could have paid less.  Regardless, the one I received (gift for my father) was in good condition especially for being almost 50 years old.

I agree with everyone the Transart book is a wonderful piece and shows the thought put into QE2’s introduction into service.
I have another book produced by Transart, similar in style but with the title “QE2 New York”. It is a show case of the British companies that worked on and supplied fittings to the QE2, showing on a profile where the various equipment was placed. A paragraph on the last page states that it is published by the British National Export Council.
Does anyone know anything about this book? Who was it given to? Why the New York title?

I have had the book for several years and have never seen another. I was lucky enough to purchase it from a resident of New York. The books opening pages state that QE2 had been in service for over seven months when the book was published and that she had started a season of cruises from NewYork. It seems to be aimed at a technical market rather than as a ship board give away.... I may be wrong here! Each supplier or contractor gets two pages, one of text and the other showing pictures of the work and the location of the equipment on board using a deck plan. The book promote the British maritime equipment industry rather than Cunard. What I cannot work out is the title New York on the front; was it part of some display or reception on board while the ship was in New York
