Title: QE2 Model 1:450 scale - finished at last! [Gunze Sangyo]
Post by: Alistair on Aug 13, 2010, 01:42 PM
Greetings from Riyadh!  8)
Before I left Glasgow for Riyadh I set myself the target of finishing the 1:450 scale model of the QE2 I had bought in early 2008.
If your wondering why, here is the background bit.

After BBC Scotland had aired the program "the Last Great Liner" and QE2 had visited Greenock in 2007 for the 40th anniversary of her launch I found myself once more fascinated by her. I wished I hadn't thrown out the airfix model I had built in 1969 so in a fit of nostalgia I bought the Revel model that was available. When it popped through my letterbox I realised there and then it was not going to be big enough! I assembled it with difficulty as I hadn't done anything like this for a very long time.
Then, while trawling through YouTube looking for clips about the QE2 I came across a clip of a large QE2 model suffering the indignity of being sunk in a bathtub. It was unpainted and the funnel was on the wrong way round but it looked good. I found out from the conversation thread on the bathtub sinking the model manufacturer and then found I could buy it online from a model shop in the US.

It arrived 2 weeks later and this time I had to answer the door as this box would definitely not fit through my letterbox. It was huge!
I was a bit intimidated by it and put it away until I knew I would have time to do justice to the building of it.

By October 2009 I had the time and the inclination and started. During it's construction I paid many visits to Jamiesons Models in the Saltmarket to buy paint, brush cleaner, paint thinner and miles of masking tape.

The model is Japanese so the english on the instructions is quite interesting. Never having sailed on the QE2 or really spent much time on board apart from the walk through in the shipyard in 1968 I decided to paint her with the colour scheme indicated on the instructions apart from the funnel which, as it was the original shape, I decided I would paint with the original colours. Anyway...iit was much easier!

I had never used masking tape before for painting a model and I have to say I was stunned by the results.
I now have a vintage airfix kit of QE2 courtesy of eBay but that will have to wait for another day.. What follows are 12 snaps of the assembly process. It has taken me 10 months elapsed time with many weeks of doing nothing between stages. I can honestly say that the most frustrating part of the assembly and painting was doing the lifeboats. I managed to break off the funnel at one point while sticking on the davits but luckily no damage was done....phew!

So, with some trepidation I release to the forum my pictures of the QE2. It is now waiting on a shelf to greet me when I come home for Xmas.

Great work!  I am really impressed!  I don't think I'd ever have the patience to do this well like you have.

Myles showed me this model last week when I visited him - but his is unmade!  Its a great size, not too big or too small for a house.

The grey decks are intriguing, I don't think they were ever like this - and I think the colours for the top of the superstructure isn't right either, i think they were green.

Your model, to me, is QE2 right before she went to the Falklands.  1978-83 ?

Thanks Rob.
Having looked at pictures of QE2 on the Forum I would guess the configuration is before she went to the Falklands.
There is a bit of green beside and to the rear of the funnel which doesn't show up on the photos and I do remember that on the airfix model the top of the bridge was green. There are pictures of her on the side of the box along with some hilarious english  e.g. "The Qe2 was built by Cunard with all their energies on the banks of the River Cryde.....etc" The box pictures were of a later configuration with all white superstructure and the rear decks looked a bit grey but maybe it was just the decking getting sunbleached. Anyhoo......I followed the paint guide slavishly apart from the funnel and I also added the red bootline. I think the lower hull should also be a more brown colour. Hopefully Myles can adapt his colour scheme accordingly. I think if I was to do it again I would do my own research on the colours. I'm just happy the lines are straight!  :D

Good piece of work Alistair.  I am sure the model will be a talking point for visitors to your house.  I can relate to the amount of work put into building the model after watching Tom working on the steam boats that he has built.

A great piece of work.

I have the same model - except that mine is still in the box. And said model and box are sitting on the end of my bed - watching me sleep.

Thanks and get it out of the box and build it!  :D

One piece of advice. The instructions say to stick the top deck and the piece with the bridge and apartments together before sticking it to the hull. I did that and the bridge piece arched up and popped off as it is slightly too big. You may have to file some bits away to get it to fit properly. Do a dry run with the parts before you put glue anywhere near it.

Looking forward to pictures of yours and Myles's versions of the model on here soon!

That would explain the extra bits that the instructions said to throw away....propellors and a few other bits that would seem to have fitted at the stern inside the hull.
Your model must look great going full steam ahead!

I built the same model too.  The kit actually depicts the ship between 1972 and 1977, as the QM and QE suites are not fitted.

Hi Alistair,

Great job!  I have the small Revell model yet to build, but I would still be interested in this larger model.  Can you tell us the manufacturer?  Regarding the colors, not having looked at the spreadsheet posted here on the various incarnations of the paint scheme, to be technically correct, would the davits have been painted black and was the superstructure the off white/tan color?

-Ken

The model manufacturer is Gunze Sangyo. Here is the link to the site I bought it from. Current price is $119

www.internethobbies.com/gunplasmodsh.html

You are right about about the davits and supertructure behind them but all the pictures I have seen from later days everything was white so I decided to go with that as I preferred the look.

When I build the old airfix model (some day) I'll do that one with the "as launched" colour scheme.

Revell did use the Gunze Sangyo mould for a short while and made the same model in a diffrent box.

I wonder why they stopped. The small one they make now fit's inside the Gunze Sangyo model. I know 'cos I tried. Even thought about leaving it inside like a russian doll but decided to put the small one back on top of the telly!

Hadn't realised there was a topic about this model!

I made it in 1991. Here's a picture of her, together with a deck plug from the real one.

Well, to be historically correct, she should either have the funnel painted white (her 1972-1977 look), or the funnel kept as such but have the Bayonne penthouses added (her 1983-1984 look).

The CUNARD decal had faded over 20 years. I replaced it by a new one since this picture was taken.

Just bought this model from a dealer in USA, awaiting dispatch & eventual arrival,(gonna cost a packet  in taxes, vat ,customs, & onward postage I recon) but looking at these results it's got to be worth it,maybe winter evenings won't be too bad after all?. Can't wait actually :P

Hi Pete - It is very exciting news to hear that you have this model coming.  Please take a picture when she arrives, and as you are working on her so you can share the progress with us.  It is, again, very exciting that we have here several models and several jigsaws being worked on at the same time.  June   :)

Well it's just arrived safe & sound, after a transatlantic crossing from Miami, (so QE2  has 'sort of ' just done an eastbound run in 2014).
Lots of research to do now, I've got to do her proud, no pressure then!!! , any help appreciated.

Hello Adam, I will certainly post on going progress - as & when , the last model I did was SS Oriana, she was built  5 miles or so down the road from here, (wish I still had it). That makes it about 40years since I glued 2 bits of plastic together, so I've got to do this model proud, I've started research on the positioning of the bow thrusters, as there is no moulding on the hull sections for them, I recon it's a case if drilling holes in the hull , then blanking off from the inside so as to simulate the closed door, the devil is in the detail (where exactly & how big to do them).Lucky for me there is a host of information  out there just got to find it.   Thanks  Pete..

Hi Pete - Thanks very much for the detailed information about your QE2 model.  It sounds to be a very interesting and exacting project.  So she (model) will really be having a building and refit.  We are looking forward to detailed info as her building progresses along with pictures.  I hope our beloved QE2 in Dubai can feel all the positive vibrations heading her way as we have three puzzles and a model in progress !!  June   :)

This is the same model as Alistairs, & am thankful to him for posting piccys of his,  for me to use for guidance ,  ;)

Oh Pete!
That looks so cool!
Probably best not to do it at the same time as the sitting room - not too sure how Mrs Pete would like a wall in Federal Gray! - Or a Funnel instead of a chimney for that matter!
All the best to you and yours

Once again, apologies to Alistair , who may think I've hijacked his topic, but this is the same model so I tagged it at the end.
Just a little landmark on mine, that is, its 1 & only basin (in this case bath) trial, this model is very lightweight being plastic ,  I thought I'd give it a bit of weight & gravitas when being handled, & deceided to  balast it at the same time , so that she also sits nice & pretty in the water . Trials successful, shipped a wee bit of water in through the rudder , but that's not sealed anyway, now high & dry again , ready for upper deckworks to start.
Thanks also to Mark for info regarding handrails (not included in the kit pack) which I've yet to order.

Awesome work, Pete, and thanks very much for posting about your work on your model and for the photos.  Yes, it does indeed appear that QE2's basin trials have been most successful and she is sitting very nicely in the water.  Please keep us up to date with photos and commentary as work progresses.  (Oh, and by the way, how much time does supervisor Jim spend in your shipyard ?   ;D)

Hi Pete - How did your QE2 model sit in the water before adding ballast ?  How much did you add and where you add it ?  What did you use for ballast ?  Thanks !  June.  :)
Title: Re: QE2 Model 1:450 scale - finished at last! [Gunze Sangyo]
Post by: pete cain on Feb 15, 2016, 05:16 PM
Hi June,  the model sat quite high out of the water, but reasonably steady, I say reasonably because I think these models were originally made to motorise &  sail on ponds/ park lakes, so would 've had to be made more stable, although there  are no hints in the instruction sheet (such as it is ) enclosed in the kit. The balast needed to be installed before the upper decks, so now seemed the best time to do it.
I'm  afraid I used trial & error with the amount, using photos as a guide from the real thing, I just loaded it up so that the white line was just above water level ,  as for the material , after rooting around the garage I deceided on ceramic wall tile adhesive, dense enough to give the weight needed,  not 'wet' as such - hardened in a few days, & got to admit it 'feels' right when handling it now.
As for the overseer, he was in the house inspecting the inside of his eyelids again  ::)

Thanks very much, Pete, for all of the very good information !  I didn't realize that these models were made so they could be motorized.  So a certain amount of trim had to be built into the model.  That is pretty good !  You did a great job with installing the ballast and that sure sounds like a good choice of material.  I am totally fascinated by seeing your model in the water !!   :)  My best to Mrs. Pete, and to Jim, the overseer, who knew all was well in hand.  June   :)

Close up of foredeck area, a hint of rigging on loading cranes, flagpole , transfers etc will be fit last along with paint touch ups.
bit of a blurry rear view of QE2's beautiful tiering, these decks are supported (on the real thing) with round colums, I need to source something near to scale & fit them in due course.

Photo etch kit (£1.00 coin for scale) for handrails along Prom deck & around davit areas, & elsewhere depending on what's left.
This stuff is so delicate, a whole new skill to be learned here , bit glad I won't be  starting this next week  (kick the  can down the road a bit). Found this to be a whole new QE2 to me, in this 70's incarnation  she seems so colourful, not the greys & whites I witnessed on board .One mistake I'm aware that I've made is, painting the' bit under the bridge ' with wood effect, should be green, however bad eyesight & shaky hands dictate that this is how it's going to stay, I can live with that.

Yes, I will give her a splash on completion(whenever that maybe). Thank you for showing an interest

Rosie, this model was originally planned to be motorised, there are parts of the kit to be used for mounting motors & the like, I'm not using. Have balasted it & floated it in the bath at home( previous posts). I will take it down to the park lake for a final once only launching when finished , probably 2020 at my present rate of progress.
QE2 forever , thanks for your kind comments , I am pleased with the paint , but my eyesight really isn't all that good now, & this kit has really small parts & shaky hands dictate a revisiting of some of them at a later date, the foremast for example  needs a bit more work yet & is wrapped in bubblewrap it will be the last thing to be fit , I've broken the ends of each arm , & don't want to do it again.

Marvellous work Pete.
I was going to have a helper on my model weekend before last as you know, but unfortunately that did not eventuate so I've had to do those jobs myself! More importantly, your model is coming along beautifully. The details on the boat deck will add real intricacy to your model and make it even better.
Fancy those pesky Australians moving into the shipyard. Do you ever think about the fact that the real ship was built faster than we make these models?
Best regards to you,
Lachlan

Got to admit I'm glad there's a fair way to go before  the one I'm doing will be finished, as for the casual staff not turning up, well you just get decent workers anymore can you  :( better luck next time we hope, look forward to more & more piccys, one thing Lachlan can you put something along side her ( maybe yourself) for an idea of scale on this beauty??

Just a little update, I have dusted down the model & started work again, it is supposedto be a winters project, but am using it as a convalescence tool to help get my left hand working.Am painting the deck working areas around where the davits will sit, this needs to be done before I attempt the photo etch railings.

Only just saw this, absolutely brilliant effect, very clever indeed.

Once again, latching onto the coat tails of Alistair, with thanks, a little update on my efforts, it has taken me ages to do the handrails around the davit areas, still needs work to make it right, am fitting boats this week before resting this model till later on in the winter, all to do on the Port side using techniques learned on this side.

Yes, nice work indeed Pete.
The paint lines are beautifully crisp and even which makes it look great. You have confirmed what I thought - the railings around the boats on the boat deck must be very fiddly and I can see how they would have taken ages. I'm not looking forward to doing them on my model. I like your comment on getting the technique right on one side then do the other side. Looks like you got the technique right right from the outset.
Looks terrific. Congratulations,
Lachlan

Pete, that is looking great.
As a model builder myself (not QE2 related at all) I know how much work, dedication and patience goes into producing these projects.
It really does make a big difference when you get to the stage when it takes on a finished appearance with the "worst" of it over and you can see final completion approaching.

Keep up the good work Sir!

Beautiful work Pete. I like your nice crisp paint lines and the consistency of the railings. I know how much patience this takes and your making a great job of the Boat Deck. Just bending the P/E brass railings squarely is a challenge isn't it. The detailing you've done will show up really well. I wish my model looked as tidy as yours!

Just a few shots of oh so slow progress on QE2, Foremast just plonked on that's why it's tilted, nearly there, still railings to sort out, & details as much as I want to do.   Just re arranged the deck chairs for a change.
Happy Christmas everybody , & as ever thanks to Alistair who started this topic such a long time ago...

Spurred on by the appearance of Gerhards fine model I unpacked mine today,  we are currently trying to sell our house, but, after no interest for 3 months thought it was time to get my life back (you know, everything tidied away forever , always spick 'n' span, hide Jim-- well forget the last one).  so here it is at present, I am trying to represent wire stays around the funnel area, & signal ropes around the foremast.
Like Lachlan it took me ages to find where ropes were tied off, but have managed reasonably well I hope you agree. I was thinking that the ropes on the foremast were a bit thick but looking at the picture that I've used as guidance from the calander in the background, maybe it's not too bad, I have limited dexterity & that is what I can work with , so it will have to stay.
There are more ropes & stays that will balance the model which I cannot for the love of me find anywhere, however I can seee them on the new forum  header  anybody help me out here please, got to be some info out there.  I know this is only a representation but, I would like it as near as possible..

Superb Pete, congratulations.
The detailing looks fantastic and you must be hugely gratified for all the work you have put in.
If I understand you correctly you are concerned about the wires that attach to the funnel. I have seen those in photos of the funnel and I think they were probably aerials. I’ve been thinking about them too. I’ve been thinking that if they were, say 20mm in diameter in reality then at scale model size they’re impossibly fine. At 1:96 they’d be 0.2 mm and at a smaller scale finer still. If I were to do it I’d probably use very fine fishing line then once they were in place gently run a black felt-tipped pen over them to make them black.
I know you’re a stickler for detail but I have to ‘fess up and say I’m not going to attempt them.
I admire your dedication to the ship and to your model of her.

Last ones, I was hoping to  indulge myself & pose the model with the picture of QE2 at anchor from next years Calander , but mine hasn't arrived as yet. If I like the look I might just send 1 last image off if you don't mind.

I've loved doing this over the last 5 winters, however lately I have broken more bits off & had to retrace my steps a few times making replacement bits . I think I've just finished it in time before getting really clumsy,
nearly 20 yr old flimsy plastic doesn't like being mistreated, dreading packing it away for when we eventually  move house.
Not in Lachlans ball park but quite pleasd with the end result , & thanks again in absentia to Alistair.

Hello, new to the forum and looking to finish my own 1/450 Gunze Sangyo QE2.

Does anyone know of a source to have a 3D printed '80s retrofitted funnel/ smoke stack?  The kit supplied funnel is the '70s "pencil" version, and I would prefer the wider funnel from the 1986 refit.  I've considered trying to scratch build it, but in comparing photos, there appears to be enough differences to make this a bit more complicated than my paltry skills would allow.

I've always loved this ship, and this model has remained in my closet for years awaiting a proper funnel.

Sorry to hijack the thread, but this appears to be the most recent modeling thread on this forum.

Thanks,
Craig

To echo Lynda, welcome Craig, there's much more here than models I hope you take the time to look around.
Regarding you model, I have seen in the distant past, references to somebody scratchbuilding a fat funel
, not necessarily on this forum, it took me 4 yrs (of mainly winter fits) to complete mine & I was always checking around , I found that, 1/2 the fun.
The problem then becomes where did I see that bit of info, in all honesty I cannot remember (doesn't help you much -sorry).
Surprising what turns up if you just search Gunge/sangyo 1/450 QE2, if I can remember or find anything out I will PM you with the info,     pete..

Actually as a postscript Craig, if you havn't assembled the funnel yet, you could do what the shipyard did when re-engining QE2 & use the original bits but adapted to suit (i/e made fatter),  this could be done with thin plastic sheet available at all model shops. You aren't committed until you start to glue........

All, thanks for the welcome.  I do intend to look around the site a good deal more, as I love the QE2, and I would have loved to sailed on her when she was still doing the trans-Atlantic crossing.  Maybe I will add a night's stay to my bucket list now that she is opening again as a floating hotel.  Alas, I was born too late to really see these liners in their heyday!

Pete, I have considered making a new funnel, but alas, it is all compound curves.  I would spend a lot of time on this, and trying to get it symmetrical may just be too hard for me.  Now that 3D printing has really come to the forefront, I was hoping that someone may just have the plans and have printed some extra parts.  I know I have ordered corrected replacement parts for my 1/200 HMS Hood from someone on Shapeways, and they have been really good quality.

Anyone know who might have the plans for the '86 funnel?  Option B is to get the plans and have someone with a quality printer print it for me.

How quickly new technology can spoil us!   ;)

Welcome aboard Craig :) ,

I assisted a good shipping friend with constructing the large scale Revell model of QE2 dating from the same period in her life (1972 to 1977) as this Gunze Sangyo model. During construction some glue melted part of the funnel and he had to reconstruct the funnel using sheet styrene. He also altered his model to the correct configuration for the traditional Cunard livery but before the Magrodome was installed and still during the steam era (June 1983 to November 1983) - this necessitated scratch building the QE and QM Grand Suites out of sheet styrene too. The results were excellent so maybe this is an option for you with the post re-engining funnel? I am no modelling expert though!
